decorated crew chiefs in racing he was
2:42
in the racing business for more than 38
2:44
years 18 of those with corvette racing
2:46
he turned corvette racing's pit stops
2:49
into a work of art it's an honor and a
2:51
pleasure to welcome dan binks to the
2:53
show dan thanks for being on corvette
2:55
today hey steve thanks for having me on
2:57
look forward to these questions this is
2:59
going to be a lot of fun buddy first
3:01
let's talk about your earlier stan your
3:03
dad got you into racing and your dad
3:05
worked with ken miles which is so cool
3:08
talk about those early years and your
3:09
recollections with your dad and ken
3:11
miles yeah so my dad started racing in
3:14
about 49 or 50 and like an mgtd and so
3:17
ken actually had a mg special so he was
3:20
a big guy on the scene there in la and
3:23
san diego where my dad lived my dad went
3:25
to driver school and ken was actually
3:27
one of the instructors afterwards it's
3:29
like something that would never happen
3:31
these days right can you imagine having
3:32
i don't know jimmy johnson as your
3:34
driver instructor or something like that
3:36
right right it would just never happen
3:38
but in those days it did so they became
3:40
friends and actually one of ken's cars i
3:43
still own i actually own a formula
3:45
junior that i gave to my dad for his
3:47
75th birthday that was raced by ken six
3:50
times and i met his son peter just a
3:52
wild ride from where my dad raced and
3:55
then i helped him through most of his
3:57
career at the andy race sort of by
3:58
himself when i went off professional
4:00
racing that's really cool having a race
4:02
car owned by ken miles must be a real
4:04
honor it's got to be a cool thing yeah i
4:07
restored it for my dad's 75th birthday
4:09
what do you get the guy that introduced
4:11
you to your career and basically took me
4:14
to college right in the car racing he
4:16
taught me everything he knew from
4:18
engines to cars i was like how can i not
4:20
repay him but show my appreciation so
4:23
i'm fortunate enough i was able to buy
4:25
that car in 1980 for three grand oh my
4:28
god that's amazing dan yeah
4:31
now you came into racing prominence
4:32
during the early 80s with tommy kendall
4:34
in a mazda rx-7 talk about that in your
4:38
relationship with tommy yes i had worked
4:40
for phil connie and a guy called me
4:43
about working on a mazda and i didn't
4:45
know much about it and i was early in my
4:47
career i went to a place called clayton
4:49
cunningham racing the first year i went
4:52
there i worked with jack baldwin on the
4:53
mazda he was going to run daytona and
4:55
sebring and did really well at both
4:57
those mazda sort of was into young
4:59
drivers sort of like what they are today
5:01
and they picked up tommy and paid for
5:03
the rest of the year and we were
5:05
fortunate enough to win the championship
5:07
in gtu with tommy and i think we won two
5:10
championships with the mazda and then we
5:13
went to the berettas and won the
5:14
championship in 88 with a beretta it was
5:16
just amazing really that tommy's talent
5:19
and then we were able to move from team
5:21
to team and still win races together
5:23
which is sort of unheard of we were at
5:25
mazda for two years we were at cars and
5:28
concepts for three years and then we
5:29
moved to jack roush so i mean it was
5:31
just phenomenal racing with tommy
5:33
kendall that's cool speaking of roush
5:35
racing you did spend time with roush and
5:37
ford talk about the differences between
5:40
ford and roush racing versus general
5:42
motors and chevrolet well general motors
5:45
had relationships like with cars and
5:47
concepts and even pratt miller in the
5:49
early days they were funded by sponsors
5:52
at cars and concepts and jim miller's
5:54
company sponsored tommy and the intrepid
5:57
and things like that but when we went to
5:58
ford it was sponsored by ford motor
6:00
company we weren't looking for so-called
6:03
sponsorship it was eye-opening for me
6:05
the amount of budgets and really if you
6:08
could dream it up jack would pay for it
6:10
he didn't waste money but like if you
6:11
went to jack and said hey i think we can
6:13
do this this and this he would find a
6:16
way to pay for it i think that's one
6:17
reason why jack and i got along i didn't
6:19
tell him any stories right i said hey
6:21
jack i need this and he gave it to me
6:23
and if it didn't work there was no
6:25
excuses i just needed to work harder and
6:27
he kind of loved that actually he hates
6:29
excuses and so do i they're never good
6:32
so i was able to win a lot of races with
6:34
jack i cherished the time that i was
6:36
there that's really cool let's talk for
6:38
just a minute about doug feehan talk
6:40
about how you met doug in the role he
6:42
played in your move over to corvette
6:44
racing first of all with doug feehan he
6:46
was involved in cars and concepts in the
6:49
90 trans am program that was the first
6:51
time i had met him he came and helped us
6:54
run our race team in the 90s with tommy
6:57
and the berettas and then
6:59
when i left and went to ford we still
7:02
were in contact he lives here in town in
7:04
michigan where i live i would see him
7:06
from time to time and then 2002 when i
7:09
was getting ready to decide whether i
7:11
was going to go to nascar or i was going
7:12
to go do something else in racing i
7:15
talked to doug feehan and i talked to
7:16
gary pratt they were like yeah we'd like
7:19
to have you on board and they kind of
7:21
work together to figure out how to do
7:23
that and make it make sense for me maybe
7:25
one of the best moves i've ever made was
7:27
going to corvette racing in 2002 the end
7:30
of 2002. that's an awesome story let's
7:33
take our first break dan and in the
7:34
segment number two we're going to talk

this is the corvette today podcast with
9:07
steve garrett
9:09
hey thanks for listening to corvette
9:10
today the podcast that talks about
9:12
everything corvette brought to you by
9:14
mid-america motorworks pursue your
9:17
passion at
9:18
mamotorworks.com i'm your host steve
9:20
garrett with me is retired corvette
9:22
racing crew chief dan binks in the
9:24
second segment we're going to talk about
9:26
dan's time with corvette racing dan you
9:28
started with corvette racing like you
9:30
said in segment number one in 2002 and
9:33
also with pratt miller talk about that
9:35
move to chevrolet corvette racing and
9:37
also with pratt miller yeah i guess
9:38
about august 2002
9:41
i talked to gary pratt and doug feehan
9:44
and said hey would there be anything
9:47
available for me and gary reached back
9:50
and said i think the timing might be
9:51
really good for you to come back to
9:53
pratt miller because i had worked there
9:54
in the 90s on the intrepid so
9:57
late october they hired me we were able
10:00
to start working with a team and trying
10:02
to fit in with a new bunch of guys and
10:04
all those things that happened and went
10:06
to sebring for our first race and won
10:08
the race wow that's sort of how it went
10:11
we were able to win the championship in
10:12
2003. i think i fit in pretty good and
10:15
gary and doug and jim miller really
10:18
enjoyed having me there it really
10:20
started uh 18 years almost 19 years of
10:24
work for me there at corvette racing
10:26
that's fantastic now like i said in the
10:28
introduction you really perfected the
10:30
corvette racing pit stop
10:32
talk about where they were before and
10:34
then what you did and how that got
10:35
perfected well just like any
10:37
professional sports team right you look
10:40
at where you need to make the cars
10:41
better or where you need to make the pit
10:43
stops better fortunate for me they had
10:45
budget to put up a pit wall and have a
10:48
car the spare car was the pit stop car
10:50
and we were able to practice in those
10:52
days one day a week maybe two days a
10:54
week and try to get better and better
10:56
but over the years there we use video
10:59
where we could overlay the videos from
11:01
one card to the other or one person to
11:03
another and really just talked out loud
11:05
with a group of guys how can we make our
11:08
pistol better sometimes we'd watch
11:10
somebody else and say okay i think
11:11
they're better than we are and then we
11:13
try to perfect it and then other times
11:14
somebody would come up with an idea and
11:16
say what do you think about doing this
11:17
and then we would try it just like
11:19
anything it's not one guy it's not dan
11:21
banks deciding hey we're going to have
11:22
the best pit stops in the world it's
11:24
just i was the leader and i helped
11:26
orchestrate where we went to there were
11:28
so many key players that i just enjoyed
11:30
so much you have a best pit stop or you
11:33
beat somebody you beat ferrari you beat
11:35
aston martin you beat all of those other
11:37
cars that we raced for years nothing
11:39
more satisfying to beat them in the pits
11:40
absolutely hey in 2015 your team won the
11:44
endurance racing triple crown which is
11:46
daytona sebring and lamar you guys won
11:49
five consecutive triple crown events in
11:51
2015 and 16 and yours was the first team
11:54
to do that since the year 2000 talk
11:57
about that because that is such a
11:58
terrific accomplishment well again the
12:02
team was phenomenal from the engine guys
12:05
to the chassis guys to the engineering
12:07
staff and the mechanics you can't win
12:09
those races like that without having
12:12
everything has to go perfect we first
12:14
went to daytona and one there so then
12:16
the pressure's on right can you win
12:17
sebring and then win in sebring and then
12:20
i don't care who you are going to le man
12:21
expecting to win is optimistic at best
12:24
okay that's the hardest race in the
12:26
world right to win there to cap off the
12:29
triple crown was unbelievable
12:31
and then to do it two years in a row
12:32
it's just like mind boggling really i
12:34
can't explain when a lot of anybody
12:36
that's amazing yeah that's an
12:38
accomplishment in and of itself the
12:40
corvette racing has won more than 100
12:42
titles with you heading up the team talk
12:44
about some of the more memorable wins
12:46
that come to mind well i think when
12:48
sebring as my first race as the crew
12:50
chief there was pretty darn special you
12:53
always have hopes or expectations of
12:56
winning but to go there with a new team
12:59
new dynamic new drivers to our whole
13:02
group and to win that one that one's
13:03
obviously one of the very best winning
13:06
the le mans to pick one of those i was
13:09
fortunate enough to be there for six of
13:10
the wins they won twice before i got
13:12
there so i would have a hard time
13:14
picking the best one the first one is
13:16
obviously pretty cool when you go up
13:18
there on the bridge there and they play
13:20
the national anthem i cried like a baby
13:23
that's probably the best one and then
13:25
daytona when we finished one two five
13:27
feet apart was pretty phenomenal too i
13:29
can imagine you guys had 20 consecutive
13:32
appearances at le mans which is quite a
13:34
feat talk about what goes into getting
13:36
ready for that race because that is the
13:38
granddaddy of all races yeah so people
13:41
think oh you know you're just going to
13:42
go to le mans and race but we ship
13:45
around 40 tons of parts engines
13:47
transmissions all the parts it's around
13:50
a two-month ordeal so a month before we
13:53
start packing everything up and the
13:55
truck leaves about three and a half
13:56
weeks before and takes 11 days and the
14:00
ship to get there then we fly guys over
14:02
there unload prep up the garage and then
14:05
we have practice then we do all the
14:06
things that we do to the cars prep
14:08
brakes and things for brake changes it's
14:11
just a phenomenal amount of work of
14:13
about 30 people and then finally race
14:16
day comes and you just can't make it up
14:18
right you walk out of the garage in the
14:20
morning and the people that are walking
14:21
around and the excitement of le mans
14:24
then it's over and then the real job
14:26
starts packing up all the junk again for
14:28
the trip home it's just an amazing
14:30
amount of work man it's gotta be just so
14:33
tiring and so stressful but such a
14:36
relief when it's all done and over with
14:38
you know it's like a love hate thing
14:39
right i mean it is the super bowl so can
14:42
you imagine going to the super bowl when
14:44
it's over hopefully you can win it right
14:46
like i said i was there 18 times in one
14:49
six with one or the other cars but the
14:51
group of guys that we put together to
14:53
get there that's expected we were
14:54
fortunate but amazing ride there that's
14:57
true you spent almost 19 years with
14:59
corvette racing any memories that stand
15:02
out the most ann
15:03
well we won the klein tool pit stop
15:06
thing twice they were the sponsor of the
15:08
pit stop championship i think they did
15:10
it like eight weekends it was uh
15:12
eliminations right from the beginning
15:14
and we were fortunate to win it i think
15:16
two years in a row and then we lost to
15:18
one we might have lost one in the middle
15:20
and then one again later but anyways
15:22
winning the pit stop thing was really
15:24
cool winning daytona is really exciting
15:27
growing up as a kid in california never
15:29
even dreaming to be able to win a race
15:31
at daytona and then to do it over and
15:33
over again was just phenomenal that's
15:36
amazing great stories buddy great
15:38
stories dan let's take our final break

dreaming of a red door and a blue door
16:53
somehow knowing there are only choices
16:55
for retirement okay through the red door
16:58
we outlive our money we have to rely on
17:00
our kids we're stuck on a fixed income
17:02
it's terrifying yeah that would suck but
17:05
through the blue door our money outlives
17:07
us we retire on our terms our kids stay
17:10
our kids not our caretakers we make work
17:13
optional yes that's much better that's
17:16
what i want too but what do we do we

[Music]
17:55
hey thanks again for listening to
17:57
corvette today the podcast that talks
17:59
about everything corvette brought to you
18:01
by mid-america motorworks pursue your
18:03
passion at mamotorworks.com
18:06
i'm your host steve garrett with me
18:07
today is retired crew chief from
18:09
corvette racing dan binks in this third
18:12
and final segment we're going to talk
18:13
about life after corvette racing dan
18:16
your last corvette racing event was the
18:17
rolex 24 daytona what do you remember
18:20
about that final race the most well we
18:22
rolled out the c8 corvette that we had
18:24
been working on for several years and
18:27
for me the final chapter of my career
18:30
not knowing actually that was going to
18:31
be my last race daytona is always
18:34
amazing we actually struggled a little
18:36
bit but we debuted that car and one car
18:38
finished and one car didn't really and
18:40
truly with new cars that's not expected
18:43
but things happen the one car wasn't
18:45
able to finish but anyways we had a good
18:46
showing with a brand new car
18:48
unfortunately that's when covid was
18:51
coming and i was going to try to retire
18:53
at the end of the year that would have
18:55
been 20 years in a row at mama for me
18:57
when covid came and they said they
18:58
weren't going to france and all that i
19:00
just said time to tap out here that's
19:02
how it went that's how it goes that's
19:03
true you're in motor racing for 38 years
19:06
dan talk about your retirement what
19:08
you're doing now i was fortunate enough
19:10
i did okay i built a shop at my house
19:12
and i do car restorations and repairs so
19:16
i had a bunch of c7 c6 and c5 pratt
19:20
miller cars that i was fortunate enough
19:21
to work on in the day now all are owned
19:24
by collectors or vintage racers so i do
19:27
that stuff now repair those cars i do
19:30
engines for all of those cars now i do
19:32
engines for sprint cars we just finished
19:34
up the chili bowl with one of my new
19:36
four-cylinder engines built it all here
19:38
right at my house in my shop so far the
19:41
retirement's been a lot of fun i can't
19:43
even quit right
19:46
yeah i know a lot of people say i don't
19:47
know how i did it when i was working
19:49
because i'm so busy now that i've
19:50
retired i don't even know how i did both
19:53
when i was really working for a living
19:55
it's pretty funny yeah i've been so
19:57
blessed i got a lot of engines which is
19:59
really fun for me i work by myself or
20:02
with one of my dogs or both my dogs
20:05
i don't have any employees anymore i
20:07
work sort of on my own schedule which is
20:09
still a lot of work but i'm fortunate
20:11
enough i can go to races or i can go to
20:13
florida or take some time off when
20:15
needed which is good that's what you
20:17
want to do hey racing is a family affair
20:19
for the binks family your son phil works
20:21
for chip ganassi racing talk about him
20:23
and what he's done there well my son
20:26
helped me in my garage growing up and
20:27
all that i guess about seven or eight
20:29
years ago maybe ten years ago he
20:31
volunteered with alex joe bracing and
20:34
actually won his first championship with
20:36
alex jobe and the weathertech porsche
20:38
and then he went to the nissan front
20:41
engine gtp car which was less than
20:43
spectacular but he learned a lot and
20:45
then fortunate enough he went to chip
20:48
ganassi when they did the ford gt
20:50
program he's been at ships for five or
20:52
six years and they made him the crew
20:54
chief on the cadillac last year for the
20:56
0-1 for ranger and kevin magnussen i
20:59
couldn't be prouder it's sort of a
21:01
love-hate deal right you have your son
21:03
doing the same thing you did fortunate
21:06
for him he didn't go to corvette because
21:08
he would always been my son there yeah
21:10
and now he's got his own life he's a
21:12
crew chief at 27 years old we could not
21:14
be prouder my wife and i are just so
21:16
excited for him that's a great story
21:18
congratulations to your son phil that's
21:20
fantastic he's carrying on the bing's
21:22
tradition isn't he that's right
21:24
absolutely now dan you wrote a book
21:26
called making it faster tales of the
21:28
endless search for speed talk about the
21:31
book and where people can purchase it
21:33
well we did a book together with a guy
21:35
named norm dewitt he was a family friend
21:38
and he wrote a bunch of the stories of
21:40
all different kinds of racers but also
21:43
where i came from and all of the endless
21:46
searching for speed and what kind of
21:49
effort it goes into you know people
21:50
think ah you just win a race a lot of
21:52
people ask well what do you do for a
21:54
living and i was like no no that's what
21:56
i do for a living i work on race cars
21:58
and people can't fathom that first of
22:00
all you can make enough money to do that
22:02
i tell people there's winners and
22:03
there's losers for a reason right people
22:05
under
22:06
the amount of effort that it takes to do
22:09
any type of racing from pinewood derby
22:11
to formula one i was fortunate to win at
22:15
every level of car racing that i did a
22:18
funny story and when i was designing my
22:20
engine one of the guys from
22:22
florida that writes for some of the
22:24
magazines says you know winning
22:25
the chili bowl is really hard and i said
22:28
yeah i know but so is winning le mans
22:30
six times
22:31
[Laughter]
22:31
[Music]
22:33
i understand how hard it is and i
22:35
understand what i'm trying to accomplish
22:37
but if it was easy it wouldn't be worth
22:39
it right if it was easy i might as well
22:40
just go play golf and i'm not very good
22:42
at that so i'm way better at doing
22:44
engines and cars i try to do things that
22:46
i enjoy and things that make me happy
22:49
and that's where i'm at there you go can
22:51
you still purchase the book dan i
22:53
believe you can i believe it's on amazon
22:55
if it isn't they could message me on
22:57
facebook and i could try to get them one
22:59
that sounds good once again the book is
23:00
called making it faster tales of the
23:03
endless search for speed speaking of
23:05
facebook and social media dan how can
23:07
people reach you so i'm on there they
23:09
can follow dan banks racing or
23:11
motorsports don't blow up my messenger
23:14
but if they had a question or something
23:15
i could answer it there you go and
23:16
that's on facebook right that's correct
23:18
okay sounds good dan thank you so much
