2:30
on today's show has a very cool job now
2:33
I don't know about you but I've always
2:34
wanted to travel and see route 66. it's
2:37
been on my bucket list for a long time
2:39
well Austin Coop owns a company called
2:42
Tulane America they take people and
2:45
Corvette clubs on the 2400 mile guided
2:48
tour from Chicago all the way to the
2:50
Santa Monica pier in Southern California
2:52
Austin is here to talk more about these
2:55
amazing Journeys Austin welcome to
2:57
Corvette today well hi thank you so much
2:59
for having me it's a pleasure to be here
3:01
Austin tell me the story about how you
3:03
came up with the idea for this business
3:05
yeah it really goes back to when I was a
3:07
little kid growing up in Indiana we had
3:10
a 62 Corvette and I was always hearing
3:12
things about Route 66 but didn't really
3:14
know what it meant and fast forward into
3:17
adulthood end up working for a travel
3:19
magazine where 66 was my beat ended up
3:22
doing guided tours for a large bus
3:24
company international company on 66 and
3:27
then eventually decided I wanted to do
3:29
it on my own I wanted to have more
3:30
control over the itinerary and so we
3:32
started doing Route 66 Car Caravans
3:35
about four years ago and then now past
3:37
couple years we've been doing Route 66
3:39
bus tours as well just as a way for me
3:41
to give the very best experience I can
3:43
for people doing route 66. that's so
3:46
cool how long has Tulane America been in
3:48
existence how many trips do you think
3:50
you've led oh gosh Tulane America has
3:52
been around about five years in terms of
3:54
operating trips we existed before that a
3:56
little bit as a Blog but it's been about
3:58
five years now and then when you include
4:00
my time with previous company and my
4:03
time as a reporter on the road I've done
4:05
Route 66 in some ways shape or form
4:08
probably about 60 times now wow that's
4:12
amazing yeah now I know Tulane America
4:14
also goes to other places than just
4:17
route 66. tell me a little bit more
4:19
about some of the other excursions that
4:20
you do yeah so it's really just been a
4:23
natural progression as people have done
4:25
66 with us they said well we want to go
4:27
on another trip because they made all
4:28
the these great friends they want to
4:29
travel together again so we started
4:31
introducing some new itineraries the
4:33
main second itinerary we have now is the
4:35
Nashville to New Orleans car Caravan I'm
4:37
in the process right now of launching
4:39
two new itineraries that will do a bunch
4:42
of the national parks out west like
4:43
Bryce and Zion arches Canyonlands Grand
4:46
Canyon as well as a New England kind of
4:49
fall colors a leaf peeping car Caravan
4:51
as well and there's also another bus
4:54
tour in the mix that we're trying to get
4:55
launched this year as well that will hit
4:57
all of your really iconic car museums
4:59
here in the Midwest like Indianapolis
5:01
Motor Speedway Henry Ford things like
5:03
that that sounds like a lot of fun too
5:05
I'd love to do that Austin you work with
5:07
a lot of Corvette clubs don't you yeah
5:09
quite a few quite a few talk to me more
5:11
about what you do with the Corvette
5:13
clubs yeah so Corvette clubs often come
5:15
to me with a couple different ideas for
5:18
some of the clubs they just want several
5:19
members to do our car Caravans so they
5:22
want to drive it other times the clubs
5:24
come to me and for whatever reason the
5:26
easiest thing to do for their Club is to
5:27
actually leave the cars at home and come
5:29
on our bus tours but for me that was a
5:31
very natural place for me to start in
5:34
terms of marketing when I first started
5:35
just because like I said my dad's got a
5:37
62 and then he's also got a C5 he
5:40
retired from Borg Warner he was an
5:41
engineer on the C5 wow so Corvettes have
5:44
always been in our family so it was such
5:46
an easy when I was dreaming what I'd
5:48
like to see well I want to see correct
5:50
people on these trips because I've been
5:51
around it that's nice so it was just a
5:53
very natural thing that's really cool
5:56
now you mentioned this and let's expand
5:58
on this a little bit more if a person or
6:00
a group doesn't want to drive their cars
6:02
you do have charted bus tours talk a
6:05
little bit more about that aspect of
6:06
Tulane America yeah so like I said I
6:09
used to work for an international bus
6:10
company and Route 66 was one of the
6:12
routes I did for them I started the
6:14
Caravans because I wanted to do
6:16
something different because I was
6:17
getting feedback that people wanted to
6:18
drive it there just wasn't a really good
6:20
guided tour option for people that
6:22
wanted to drive it now I'm also seeing
6:24
the flip side of that it's a long trip
6:26
it's 2400 miles plus your return trip
6:29
home so for a lot of people whether it
6:31
be the daunting nature of having to
6:33
drive it or just the mileage on their
6:35
cars and things like that the bus tour
6:37
became a really natural progression as
6:39
well so whatever floats your boat if
6:41
driving is important to you then you can
6:43
drive it in our car Caravans if you'd
6:46
rather take a break from the driving and
6:48
ride on the bus the bus tour is almost
6:50
identical definitely the best 66 bus
6:52
itinerary out there the big advantage of
6:55
the bus other than not having to drive
6:56
is you can also get more of that
6:58
information history so I'd say if
7:01
somebody really loves documentaries and
7:03
movies and audio clips and video clips
7:05
and things like that the driving tour
7:07
you get the richness of driving it the
7:09
bus tour you get the richness of the
7:11
history and the immersion into 66. so
7:14
they're both great options very nice
7:15
well buddy let's take our first break
7:17
and when we come back we're going to
7:19
talk more about the mechanics and the
7:20
history of Route 66 I have Austin Coop

12:03
with me today is Austin Coop the owner
12:05
of Tulane America and Route 66. in the
12:08
second segment we're going to talk about
12:09
some of the nuts and bolts in the
12:11
specifics Austin first let's give our
12:14
listeners and viewers a history of Route
12:16
66 from all the way back when to present
12:19
day yeah I like to tell people that
12:21
Route 66 really tells the story of
12:24
modern America starts around 1926 in
12:28
some places the road had already been
12:29
built and was just rebadged in other
12:31
places you know they made New Road it
12:33
really starts in 1926 and then over time
12:36
just as America changed Route 66 changed
12:40
so in 1926 really becomes the first
12:44
all-weather all-year highway to get from
12:47
Chicago to La you'll hear people talk
12:49
about it being America's first Highway
12:51
that's not accurate Lincoln Highway some
12:53
of these other roads predate it but it's
12:55
really that one that Finds Its way into
12:57
the Zeitgeist as the iconic road yeah go
13:00
to the novel Grapes of Wrath and John
13:02
Steinbeck that's where the name the
13:04
Mother Road comes from but really it
13:07
tells the story of America you know in
13:09
the 20s up through prohibition it's used
13:12
as a bootlegger route during the Dust
13:14
Bowl it's used as a way to escape the
13:17
Dust Bowl to California during World War
13:19
II it's a way for GIS to get back and
13:22
forth to wherever they're going
13:23
including Clark Gable and then you know
13:25
the summer of love it becomes a way for
13:26
people to head out west in the hippie
13:28
movement so it really kind of tells the
13:31
story of America but it's a road and
13:33
just like the cars changed the road
13:36
changed so originally you're doing it in
13:38
model T's model A's you don't just need
13:40
gas which you need more frequently you
13:42
also need tune-ups you need water you
13:44
need all sorts of things the purpose of
13:47
66 was to go through as many small towns
13:50
as humanly possible because the cars
13:52
needed service so you'd have a small
13:54
town that might have 20 gas stations
13:56
well as the cars get bigger and faster
13:59
and get more range the road gets
14:01
straighter wider faster all the way on
14:04
up until the interstate passes it by the
14:06
road changed just like our cars changed
14:09
so it really is a fascinating look at
14:11
modern America that's really cool now I
14:14
mentioned in the introduction it's a
14:16
2400 mile trip from Chicago to Santa
14:19
Monica talk about that trip and some of
14:22
the towns that you go through as you go
14:24
route 66. yeah so I think it's important
14:27
to start with a lot of people will hear
14:29
Through the Grapevine that oh you know
14:30
none of it's left none of 66 is left
14:32
eighty percent of the original road is
14:34
still in existence nice now some of
14:36
that's gravel which obviously we're not
14:38
going down but our goal with our trips
14:40
is if you were to try to do all the
14:43
remaining road every last bit of it
14:45
including like I said there's three
14:47
different alignments of Route 66. so if
14:49
you're really trying to do all of it it
14:50
would take you about a month and it
14:52
would start to get redundant and maybe
14:54
not that exciting so what we try to do
14:56
on our trips is prioritize when to take
14:59
the interstate if 66 is just a frontage
15:02
road or you're not seeing anything and
15:03
when to take 66 so we try to prioritize
15:06
the best towns prime example there's a
15:08
town here in Illinois called Pontiac
15:10
they've got a car museum they've got a
15:12
Route 66 Museum they've got a Veterans
15:14
Museum they've got a photo gallery
15:16
they've got murals and art I like to
15:18
tell people that it's like one big
15:19
episode of American Pickers lots of old
15:22
cars lots of roadside attractions and
15:24
the small towns and then also the big
15:26
cities a lot of people when they think
15:28
66 they don't think about the cool stuff
15:31
in St Louis Oklahoma City Tulsa
15:33
Albuquerque we run up to Santa Fe okay
15:36
there's lots of great stuff in the big
15:38
cities that we hit as well that's really
15:40
cool now we talked about some of the
15:41
Cities talk about some of the landmarks
15:43
that people will see when they take this
15:45
trip down Route 66. yeah so right out of
15:48
the gate you're going to see a lot of
15:49
the community called Muffler Man or the
15:51
Paul Bunyan statues right so you're
15:53
going to see a lot of that roadside
15:54
catch a lot of those old cars by the
15:57
side of the road we go to a lot of
15:59
vintage filling stations ranging from
16:01
different years different architecture
16:03
Styles if you've seen the movie Cars
16:05
almost everything in the movie Cars is
16:07
based off of real people and real places
16:09
on Route 66 and we go to almost all of
16:13
them a lot of old curio shops and then
16:15
lots of museums some really phenomenal
16:18
car museums history museums the Oklahoma
16:20
City Bombing Memorial we go there that's
16:23
unbelievably moving and in stuff like
16:25
Santa Fe we do a Day Tour up to Santa Fe
16:27
Santa Fe was on Route 66 very very
16:30
briefly so you get a little bit of
16:32
everything no matter what your interests
16:34
are as long as you have a basic interest
16:36
in kind of Americana it's a wonderful
16:38
trip I love the places like the blue
16:40
swallow motel and things like that yeah
16:43
all the neat things the neon lights and
16:45
stuff like that yeah and I've built a
16:47
great relationship with the owners of
16:49
the blue swallow and when we go to
16:50
Tucumcari they actually welcome the
16:53
group show us what a room looks like
16:55
tell us the history of the hotel it's
16:57
just great experiences that you get from
17:00
me having years of working with the same
17:02
people on Route 66. that's really cool
17:04
now when people sign up with Tulane
17:06
America talk about what's covered and
17:08
then what still needs to be paid for by
17:10
the individuals yeah so we try to design
17:12
the trips whether you do the car Caravan
17:15
or the bus tour try to design them to be
17:17
mostly inclusive but still with enough
17:19
freedom and flexibility that you have
17:21
some wiggle room to enjoy yourself on
17:24
our trips we cover all the hotels
17:26
they're all nice hotels I tell people
17:28
I've been doing this too long to stay at
17:30
some nasty Hotel so all the hotels all
17:33
your breakfasts two lunches three
17:35
dinners and then anytime we go to
17:37
something like the Grand Canyon or the
17:39
Oklahoma Route 66 Museum anytime we go
17:41
to an activity that's included as well
17:44
nice there's also lots of other extras
17:46
and little additions that I don't want
17:49
to spoil to surprise some special guests
17:50
that join us for meals and things like
17:52
that but basically whether it's on the
17:54
car Caravan or the bus tour really
17:56
whatever meals are not included is your
17:59
only other expense obviously if you're
18:01
driving in the Caravan your gas yeah and
18:03
then I tell people of course you're
18:05
going to want to budget for lots and
18:06
lots of souvenirs
18:08
smart very smart now obviously it would
18:11
be fun to do this with a Corvette club
18:13
it's more fun that way obviously but
18:15
talk about booking individual trips as
18:18
well as with Club two yeah it's very
18:20
very easy I made the registration
18:21
process simple because that's easier on
18:23
everybody if you want to do it as a club
18:25
I encourage you to email me or call me
18:27
all my contact informations on the
18:29
website and we can talk about group
18:30
rates and stuff like that but the nuts
18:32
and bolts of it basically there's a
18:34
registration form online and you sign up
18:36
and we ask for a 250 per person deposit
18:39
that's fully refundable until 30 days
18:41
before the trip and then 30 days before
18:43
the trip is also when the remaining
18:45
balance is due so we try to keep it very
18:48
very simple so that it's pretty painless
18:50
for everybody nice well Austin let's
18:52
take our final break and when we come
18:53
back we're going to talk about how you
18:55
can book the excursions with Tulane
18:57
America here on Corvette today

19:14
hey honey are you awake um I am now I
19:17
can't sleep since turning 50 I keep
19:19
dreaming of a red door and a blue door
19:21
somehow annoying there are only choices
19:23
for retirement okay through the red door
19:26
we outlive our money we have to rely on
19:28
our kids we're stuck on a fixed income
19:30
it's terrifying yeah that would suck but
19:33
through the blue door our money outlives
19:35
us we retire on our terms our kids stay
19:38
our kids not our caretakers we make work
19:41
optional yes that's much better that's
19:44
what I want too but what do we do we
19:46
call true wealth and Company at

21:32
833-840-5334 I'm your host Steve Garrett
21:35
with me today is Austin Coop the owner
21:37
and founder of Tulane America going down
21:40
Route 66. Austin in the third and final
21:43
segment I know you talk a lot about
21:44
Corvette clubs but you've also worked
21:46
with other car clubs too I'm sure that
21:48
maybe some Corvette owners have other
21:50
cars like GTOs and Camaros that they're
21:52
part of a group with talk about the cork
21:54
vet clubs that you've worked with and
21:56
toured with Route 66 and then some of
21:58
the non-corpec clubs that you've LED
22:00
down Route 66. yeah so it's always
22:03
interesting how people come to me when
22:05
it first started what I would get is
22:08
maybe a couple that would do the trip in
22:10
their Corvette trip was over they'd go
22:11
back home they'd go to their meeting and
22:13
they would tell everybody about their
22:14
trip it's been progressing that way both
22:17
through the Corvettes we've had it
22:19
through the Thunderbird groups some of
22:20
the Mopar groups some of the Mustang
22:22
clubs and then now what we're seeing as
22:24
we've been around a little bit longer is
22:27
we're seeing entire clubs reserve dates
22:30
or Reserve spots prime example the
22:32
Bluegrass Corvette club out of Lexington
22:34
Kentucky for 2023 they took one of my
22:38
dates and they just said that's ours we
22:39
want every spot on it wow that's hard to
22:42
coordinate and so it takes a little
22:43
while for the clubs to get everybody on
22:45
the same page for a trip and things like
22:47
that but we're working with some clubs
22:49
here in Illinois to do some two three
22:51
day trips just through the state of
22:52
Illinois it's interesting because
22:54
everybody that does the trip loves old
22:57
cars loves all this stuff and so most of
23:00
them have a toy car at home so it's
23:02
interesting whether it's the car Caravan
23:04
or the bus tour within an hour of
23:06
everyone meeting each other you look
23:08
around and everybody's got their phones
23:09
out showing each other what they've got
23:11
in the garage we never make unless a
23:13
club reserves an entire date we never
23:15
say this bus tour is only for Camaro
23:18
people or this car Caravan is only for
23:20
Challenger people because we want to be
23:22
flexible and be inviting to everybody
23:24
it's interesting everybody whether
23:26
they're on the bus or in the car Caravan
23:28
everybody has this common wavelength and
23:31
so it's cool to see everybody just
23:33
become fast friends that's really nice
23:35
now you're already getting booked for
23:37
2023 talk about how many trips you'll
23:39
make on Route 66 and what are the dates
23:41
of those trips that are still available
23:42
yeah so we're doing five car Caravans
23:45
this year and we're doing three bus
23:47
tours the car Caravan one of those dates
23:49
was reserved in its entirety by a
23:52
Corvette club another date roughly 50 of
23:55
it was taken normally we would be about
23:57
50 books this time of year and we're at
24:00
about 80 booked for the car Caravans wow
24:03
so at this point the only car Caravan
24:05
date that still has some space on it
24:07
would be the August 19th through the
24:09
31st one and it's got space for another
24:11
eight to ten cars and then our bus tours
24:14
we basically run one in June one in
24:16
August and one in September and those
24:19
are all starting to fill up but still
24:21
plenty of space for clubs or groups or
24:23
anybody that wanted to hop on those so
24:25
it's been a busy fall here in terms of
24:28
bookings so it's been great that's
24:29
awesome talk about some of the non-route
24:32
66 tours that are planned for 2023 as
24:34
well yep so as I mentioned at the start
24:37
a Nashville to New Orleans car Caravan
24:39
starts in Nashville does Nashville
24:41
Memphis Tupelo Natchez New Orleans all
24:45
of our other trips are much shorter
24:47
they're typically seven to nine days
24:49
long while the Route 66 trip is longer
24:51
distance so it's 13 days but that
24:53
southern tour is great for anybody that
24:54
loves music loves food it's a phenomenal
24:57
trip right now trying to get the
24:59
websites finalized and get everything
25:00
posted for the biggest to Vegas car
25:03
Caravan the Vegas to Vegas Caravan is
25:05
going to do Grand Canyon Monument Valley
25:07
arches rice Zion just some of your best
25:10
national parks out west very easy trip
25:13
again about an eight day or you can
25:15
either drive to Vegas or fly to Vegas do
25:17
the trip start in Vegas and in Vegas
25:19
tack on a couple extra days and in the
25:21
Fall colors trip going to start just
25:23
North of Boston and run up to Bar Harbor
25:25
Maine and back do some of the most
25:27
scenic drives up there go to Ben and
25:29
Jerry's do the Mount Washington Auto
25:31
road so that'll be a great trip as well
25:33
just based on feedback I've been getting
25:35
from people I think both of those trips
25:37
are going to fill up fast gonna try to
25:39
also get the website posted here in the
25:41
coming weeks for Midwest Motorhead bus
25:43
tour that one's a good Tour on a bus
25:46
because the scenery of Northern Illinois
25:48
Central Indiana Southern Michigan it's
25:50
not like driving the Tail of the Dragon
25:52
you know you're just driving through
25:54
cornfields sure but some of the very
25:56
best car museums in the United States
25:59
are in that region that trip's going to
26:01
do a little bit of Route 60 six it's
26:03
going to do Indianapolis Motor Speedway
26:05
Museum Studebaker Museum the court
26:07
Auburn Duesenberg Museum the Henry Ford
26:09
just a great way to knock out all those
26:12
museums in one Fell Swoop I'm kind of
26:14
excited about that one yeah that's
26:16
awesome now if someone wants to reach
26:18
out to you or get more information let's
26:19
talk about how they can reach you and
26:21
what the website is yeah so our website
26:23
