3:52
close and personal on this episode. His
3:54
name is Robert Maximer. Robert, welcome
3:57
to Corvette today.
3:58
Hey, thank you. Thank you for having me.
4:00
You bet. Robert, I always start off this
4:02
way with our guests. Tell me about where
4:04
you grew up. Do you have any siblings?
4:06
And did you come from a car family?
4:08
Yeah, well, you know, I grew up the
4:09
great state of Texas, South Texas, down
4:11
by Corpus Christi. We were a car family
4:13
in that we worked on our cars. My
4:15
granddaddy was a master mechanic for
4:18
about 55 years for Chevrolet. So, he was
4:20
a Chevrolet man. That was instilled on
4:22
me early on. We always enjoyed working
4:25
on our own cars. My uncle had a couple
4:27
Corvettes that we love to drive around.
4:29
Galveastston. A lot of good memories
4:31
about that. So cars were very much part
4:33
of our upbringing.
4:34
That's cool. So they were important to
4:36
you as you were growing up with your
4:37
granddad and everything, right?
4:39
That's right. Yeah, cars were a big part
4:41
of our family for sure.
4:42
Was there a certain car that you were
4:44
attached to as a young boy? Since your
4:46
granddad had some Corvettes, maybe that
4:48
was the one that really kind of leaned
4:50
your direction.
4:51
Well, it was my uncle that had
4:52
Corvettes. My granddad, he was big into
4:55
El Caminos.
4:56
Oh.
4:56
He loved his El Caminos. And I remember
4:58
growing up and I can still kind of smell
5:00
the fabric in those cars on a hot Texas
5:03
day, you know, it was really unique and
5:05
I've always really loved the El Camino
5:07
myself, too.
5:08
That's really cool. Where did you go to
5:10
school? What did you study and what is
5:11
your degree in?
5:12
Well, it's interesting story. I fell
5:14
into theater in high school and really
5:17
enjoyed that. Did a lot there and wanted
5:20
to go into film. So, I went to the
5:21
University of North Texas for a year
5:24
until I realized I wanted to act in
5:26
films. Oh,
5:27
I auditioned. I got into Carnegie Melon
5:30
University in Pittsburgh and transferred
5:32
up there and had to start over as a
5:33
freshman and was there for four years
5:35
and graduated with a degree in drama.
5:37
Very nice. Well, I tell you what,
5:39
Robert, let's take our first break. When
5:40
we come back, we're going to talk about
5:42
your work career after you graduated
5:44
school. That's coming up next on
5:46
Corvette Today. We all know that wheels
5:48
make the car. Wheelcraft's PVD chrome
5:50
finish in bright chrome or black chrome
5:52
will take your Corvette to new levels
5:54
and it comes with a 5-year warranty.
5:56
Durability is defining feature of the
5:58
Wheelcraft finish. Their PVD chrome is
6:00
superior to traditional chrome with a
6:02
finish that is brake dust resistant and
6:04
cleans effortlessly with soap and water.
6:06
Wheelcraft offers factory wheel exchange
6:08
for select C4 through C8 models. Or they
6:11
can apply the PBD finish to your current
6:13
wheels. No matter what generation you
6:14
own, Wheelcraft will transform the look
6:16
of your Corvette. With every Corvette
6:18
comes a unique story, and Wheelcraft has
6:21
embraced his idea. When you purchase
6:22
your new set of wheels, you receive a
6:24
lifetime membership to the Wheelcraft
6:26
Pit Crew, granting you access to your
6:28
own page on Wheelcraft's website where
6:30
you can post pictures and tell your
6:31
Corvette story. Visit our website at
6:33
wheelcraft.com or call 833639-4231.
6:38
Arrive in style with Wheelcraft. Hey
6:41
honey, are you awake?
6:42
M I am now.
6:44
I can't sleep. Since turning 50, I keep
6:46
dreaming of a red door and a blue door.
6:48
Somehow knowing there are only choices
6:50
for retirement.
6:52
Okay.
6:53
Through the red door, we outlive our
6:54
money. We have to rely on our kids.
6:56
We're stuck on a fixed income. It's
6:58
terrifying.
6:59
Yeah, that would suck.
7:00
But through the blue door, our money
7:02
outlives us. We retire on our terms. Our
7:05
kids stay our kids, not our caretakers.
7:07
We make work optional.
7:09
Yes, that's much better. That's what I
7:11
want, too. But what do we do? We call
7:13
True Wealth and Company at 913-6538783.
7:17
They specialize in helping successful
7:19
people make work optional. They're our

8:56
I'm your host, Steve Garrett. With me is
8:58
the brand new director of collections
9:00
and exhibitions at the National Corvette
9:02
Museum, Robert Maxheimer. In this second
9:05
segment, we're going to talk about
9:06
Robert's work career. Robert, right out
9:08
of school, you got your degree. What did
9:10
you do right out of school?
9:11
Well, you know, I was trying to pay the
9:13
bills. I uh moved out to Los Angeles to
9:15
become a big movie star. I fell into
9:18
carpentry. I had a little background
9:19
with that, working with my dad. I worked
9:21
at a carpentry scenic fabrication shop
9:24
there in the San Frernando Valley for
9:25
about 4 years building traveling
9:28
exhibitions and permanent museum
9:30
exhibitions and installing them all over
9:32
the world. That was a pretty fun gig. I
9:34
left there when I was a production
9:36
manager and then decided I needed to
9:38
focus on acting again. So, I had a
9:40
couple roles in some shows and couple
9:43
films and realized pretty quickly that I
9:45
needed a full-time job if I wanted to
9:47
actually have a family, which was my
9:49
ultimate goal. So, I got into the fine
9:52
art handling installation world. So, we
9:55
worked at Lakma and Betty and Mocha and
9:58
a bunch of museums around Los Angeles.
10:00
And one of our clients was Disney. Oh,
10:02
and you worked at Disney for almost 10
10:04
years. That had to be an exciting
10:06
experience.
10:07
It was. It was. I started working there
10:09
right when I got married and we had our
10:11
first child. So, working at Disney, I
10:13
was a all-star dad. Got to bring home a
10:15
lot of stuff and then we visited the
10:17
park whenever we wanted to. But the job
10:19
itself was pretty unique. I was at the
10:21
Disney archives. Started as a curatoral
10:23
associate. We oversaw the collections,
10:26
the exhibitions, displays at the various
10:28
parks and club 33s and things all over
10:31
the world. When I started, we had a
10:33
staff of about 10. And when I left,
10:36
which was almost 10 years later, we were
10:38
at like 32. So, it grew pretty rapidly.
10:41
But it was a fantastic experience for
10:43
sure.
10:43
Boy, you had to love the perks as well.
10:45
That had to be fantastic.
10:47
Yes, it was.
10:48
Now, your job with Disney was really
10:50
multiaceted. You worked with business
10:52
partners. You created worldwide exhibits
10:54
which included Disney consumer products,
10:56
also the Disney studios and the parks
10:58
and resorts. Tell me a little bit more
11:00
about all that. That sounds fascinating.
11:02
Yeah, there really wasn't an exhibition
11:04
program when we started. The archives
11:06
was part of corporate and part of DCCR,
11:09
which was our arm to help the rest of
11:11
the company. So if somebody in Japan and
11:14
consumer products needed help with
11:16
something or they wanted an exhibit
11:18
because they're rolling out a new
11:19
princess line, they would reach out to
11:21
us and we would pull things out of the
11:23
archives, develop an exhibition, curated
11:25
and then travel it through Japan. We did
11:27
that there in Hong Kong and Taiwan, UAE,
11:30
London. Eventually my wife got tired of
11:33
me traveling all the time. So I pitched
11:35
the idea of why don't we do a domestic
11:37
tour? you know, we're doing all this
11:39
work overseas, so we should try to
11:40
develop something that we can travel
11:42
here. And that's what we did. We built a
11:44
catalog of about four exhibits that
11:46
travel around the United States,
11:48
including the Disney Hund exhibition,
11:50
which is still traveling now.
11:51
As a matter of fact, the Disney 100
11:53
exhibition is here in Kansas City right
11:55
now.
11:56
That's right.
11:56
Yeah, I'm dying to get down there and
11:58
see that. That's really cool. So, you
12:00
really were the spokesperson for the
12:02
Disney archives, weren't you then? Yeah,
12:04
I you know being the person kind of in
12:06
charge of exhibitions, I would go out
12:08
oversee the installation and then
12:10
inevitably especially in Japan, there
12:12
was a lot of press, a lot of autographs,
12:14
which was very bizarre to me. It was a
12:16
lot of fun. A company like Disney,
12:18
people just love the brand. So, it was a
12:20
lot of fun talking to people, showing
12:22
them new things from the archives. There
12:24
weren't a lot of unhappy people. So, it
12:26
was it was a lot of fun.
12:28
That sounds like a lot of fun. Now,
12:29
after you were at Disney, you went to
12:31
the San Diego History Center. You were
12:33
their manager of exhibitions and
12:35
facilities there too.
12:36
That's correct. Yeah. So when I was at
12:38
Disney, I went to the Harvard Extension
12:42
School to get a certificate in museum
12:44
studies just to kind of expand my
12:46
knowledge of museums and really fell in
12:48
love with nonprofits and everything that
12:50
they do for communities. So that led me
12:53
to make the hard decision to leave
12:55
Disney and accept an offer at the San
12:57
Diego History Center, which was a great
12:59
introduction to working in a nonprofit.
13:02
a lot different. It was a much different
13:04
pace, but the community, the staff,
13:07
everyone, it was all about the greater
13:08
good, which is what I really, really
13:10
loved. So,
13:11
yeah, it it really sounds like all of
13:13
your work career with the San Diego
13:15
History Center and with Disney really
13:17
laid the groundwork for your new
13:18
position there at the National Corvette
13:20
Museum, didn't it?
13:21
Absolutely. Yeah. you know, you couldn't
13:23
script it any better going from Disney
13:25
and then to the San Diego History Center
13:27
for a couple years just to kind of
13:29
decompress and really learn the ins and
13:31
outs of working in a nonprofit. And then
13:34
when the National Corvette Museum
13:36
reached out and said they had a
13:37
position, obviously the transition from
13:40
Southern California to Bowling Green,
13:41
Kentucky can be a bit of a change,
13:45
especially for my wife who was born and
13:47
raised in La Hoya, California. But it's
13:50
been a fantastic journey and like you
13:51
said, it really laid the groundwork for
13:53
where I am now.
13:54
I want to talk about that. Let's take
13:56
our final break. Robert, when we get
13:58
back, I want to hear more about that
14:00
because it's always a cool story to hear
14:02
how you got in contact with the National
14:04
Corvette Museum and how you got the job
14:06
that you're in right now. So, let's take
14:08
that final break. When we come back,
14:09
we're going to talk more about your
14:10
responsibilities there at the National
14:12
Corvette Museum. Coming up next here on

17:17
I'm your host Steve Garrett. With me is
17:19
the new National Corvette Museum
17:21
director of collections and exhibits,
17:23
Robert Maxheimer. In this final segment,
17:25
we're going to talk more about his job
17:27
there at the NCM. Robert, I always love
17:30
these stories. Tell me the story about
17:32
how you found out about the position at
17:34
the National Corvette Museum and how you
17:36
got the job.
17:37
Yeah, well, it was a job that was posted
17:38
on LinkedIn. I wasn't necessarily
17:40
looking for a new position, especially
17:42
one outside of California, but it came
17:44
up. I've always had a fascination with
17:47
Corvette and from a 5,000 foot view,
17:49
just the brand and the folks that are
17:52
involved with Corvette. It remind me a
17:54
lot of Disney. So, I was really excited
17:56
the idea of working with people that
17:57
were really passionate about one
17:59
singular thing like the Corvette. So,
18:01
yeah, they reached out, we spoke about
18:03
it, and I talked it over with my wife,
18:05
and everything moved very quickly. I
18:06
think from the time that the job was
18:08
offered to when we were actually in a
18:10
house that we had just bought moved in,
18:12
it was only a couple months.
18:13
Wow. That is fast.
18:14
Very fast.
18:15
Yeah. And like we said in the previous
18:17
segment, it really sounds like all your
18:20
job experience has led you to Bowling
18:22
Green almost. You're in charge of the
18:24
collections, the Corvettes. You're also
18:26
in charge of more than 50,000 Corvette
18:28
artifacts and exhibits. You've got a
18:30
good team working with you there at the
18:32
NCM. Tell me after all that, what was
18:34
like your first order of business once
18:36
you arrived at the National Corvette
18:38
Museum?
18:38
Well, it was a bit of a whirlwind coming
18:40
in obviously 2 months and trying to
18:42
adjust to a whole new town, a whole new
18:43
part of the country on a personal level.
18:45
Coming into the museum, I really wanted
18:48
to take a breath and get to know not
18:50
just the museum itself, but the staff,
18:52
what has been established here as far as
18:54
protocols and really try to identify
18:57
things that maybe I could help smooth
18:59
along as far as some challenges or
19:01
things that might have been here. and
19:02
getting to know the collection, becoming
19:04
more well-versed with Corvette and the
19:06
history of Corvette. So, that was kind
19:08
of the first six months. Now, it's about
19:10
implementing that change and having a
19:12
clear goal for the future.
19:13
Is there any area of the National
19:15
Corvette Museum that you felt needed
19:16
some immediate attention?
19:18
You know, I'll be honest. I came in, I
19:20
was very fortunate that a lot of the key
19:23
players have been put in place within
19:24
our library and archives. Our curator
19:27
who's on board here, Brian Gable, who's
19:29
fantastic. We have a registar who's also
19:31
comes from a long line of museum
19:33
background. It wasn't like coming into
19:36
something completely in shambles.
19:38
Everyone knew what they were doing.
19:39
Everyone was very passionate about what
19:41
they were doing. It was lucky for me
19:43
that I didn't have to come in and
19:44
immediately fix anything. It was more
19:46
about setting some clear objectives for
19:48
the immediate future and kind of long
19:51
term, too.
19:51
That's good to hear. What's your vision
19:53
for the NCM's exhibits and collections
19:56
as we move forward, Robert? Well, I
19:58
believe that the museum needs to mirror
20:01
what Corvette itself embodies, and
20:03
that's a constant change and pushing
20:06
themselves from a technological
20:08
standpoint, but also an aesthetic
20:09
standpoint of being the number one
20:12
sports car in the world. I think the
20:14
museum has the capability of being the
20:16
top automobile museum in the world. I
20:18
really believe that. As long as we keep
20:20
pushing ourselves and challenging
20:21
ourselves, we have the ability to
20:23
achieve that. You know, education is
20:25
something that I now oversee too. And
20:27
that's a big part of my passion. I think
20:29
that we have also the capability of
20:31
being the number one education
20:33
institution in Kentucky in this part of
20:35
the country. There's a lot going for us.
20:37
We're headed in the right direction. You
20:39
know, the exhibitions coming from
20:40
Disney. My whole thing was edutainment.
20:43
You know, you get people in the door.
20:44
They're already excited. You engage them
20:47
emotionally. Then you can engage them
20:49
intellectually. They kind of drop their
20:51
veil in a way and you're allowed to show
20:53
them something that maybe they wouldn't
20:55
have normally noticed. At Disney, it was
20:57
about animation. It was about costumes,
21:00
props, and here it's about the
21:02
automobile. It's not just Corvette. It's
21:04
the history of the automobile industry.
21:06
There's, like I said, technology, the
21:08
physics. There's just so many different
21:10
things that we could tap into.
21:12
Yeah, definitely. Now, you mentioned
21:13
this a little bit earlier, but coming
21:15
from La Hoya and Southern California,
21:17
how's it been? and transitioning over to
21:19
Bowling Green.
21:20
It's been really nice because we got
21:23
here, I think it was nine degrees, snow
21:25
on the ground. It was a little rough
21:28
there the first week, but what I've
21:30
noticed is people say it all the time,
21:31
you don't like the weather, just wait a
21:33
couple hours and it'll change.
21:34
Yep.
21:34
And that's true. But spring, all the
21:37
flowers came in, the trees bloomed, and
21:39
it's just been absolutely gorgeous. And
21:41
there is so much to do around here and
21:44
around Bowling Green and Kentucky and
21:46
Tennessee. my family and I, we've just
21:48
had a blast exploring all those places.
21:50
So, we're really, really enjoying it.
21:52
That's awesome. Well, Robert, thank you
21:54
for taking the time to be on Corvette
21:56
