2:43
what is a brand quality manager well on
2:45

2:47
that in full detail i've known today's

2:54
in the business they don't get any
2:56

3:00

3:02

3:04
and i'm looking forward to sharing my
3:06
story and know what brand quality is all
3:08
about there you go buddy and thank you
3:10
so much for being on the show absolutely
3:12
first of all jeff talk to me about your
3:14
childhood and your upbringing where did
3:15
you grow up did you come from a car
3:17
family oh sure absolutely i came from
3:20
actually a gm car family my father
3:22
worked for general motors actually with
3:24
pontiac division writing service manual
3:27
so he's like a service engineer and he
3:29
worked his way up through the pontiac
3:31
ranks retiring as the service director
3:34
for pontiac and then he went over to
3:36
customer relations group sort of like
3:39
that rights bulletins and he was the
3:41
director for that actually when i cut my
3:43
arm i bleed pontiac red or in this case
3:46
corvette red yeah i've been with general
3:49
motors for as long as i can remember
3:51
that's so cool now growing up jeff did
3:53
you always like cars what was your
3:54
favorite car as a young boy oh yeah i
3:57
always loved cars muscle cars hot rods
4:00
were my big deal since my dad worked for
4:02
general motors i could always remember
4:05
as a little kid hey daddy make the tiger
4:07
roar and of course that was the gto
4:10
judge in its day wow what a pleasure it
4:12
just brings goosebumps to me right now
4:14
my father's no longer with me but wow
4:16
what a great time we had that's awesome
4:19
hey where did you go to college and
4:20
what'd you study what's your degree from
4:22
college so my degree from college was
4:25
the college of hard knocks
4:28
i was an individual that in high school
4:31
first couple hours of school i was in
4:33
the bus garage helping fix buses then
4:36
after that i was always engaged in the
4:38
mechanical side so in high school i had
4:41
honors in woodshop i had honors in power
4:43
mechanics anything to do with your hands
4:46
i was there but i did go to school i
4:48
just never finished my degree but
4:50
general motors certainly saw my ability
4:53
because they've given me the opportunity
4:55
to get where i'm at without the college
4:57
degree and i commend them for that
4:59
absolutely what attracted you to
5:01
corvette jeff what was your favorite
5:03
corvette early on early on was probably
5:06
the 67 of course everybody loves that
5:09
one because it's got the l88 in it that
5:12
was my one that i liked what i had to
5:14
settle for is the 67 gto i had that in
5:17
high school senior year wasn't new i
5:20
remember pulling it back from kansas
5:22
city and i've redid that did a frame off
5:24
on it in fact i still own it but the 67
5:28
was nice certainly when i came into
5:30
brand quality the c7 generation and i
5:33
could drive all of the corvettes man
5:35
that one really stood out of course the
5:38
c8 i had the chance to drive that one
5:40
and it just gets better and better every
5:42
year but 67 i love that l88 hood it was
5:46
very aggressive looking that's an
5:47
awesome car that's for darn sure and
5:50
expensive yes very expensive
5:55
all right do you still own corvettes i
5:56
know you said you still have your gto
5:58
yes but do you have corvettes in the
6:00
stable no i don't when i was a young man
6:03
working as a technician i told my wife
6:06
back then at 35 i hope to own a corvette
6:10
well 35 came and went had a daughter of
6:13
course raising a family i couldn't
6:15
afford that but now i have the
6:17
opportunity to get him and drive them as
6:19
company cars but when i retire
6:22
absolutely i have my order for z06 very
6:25
cool well buddy let's take our first
6:27

9:56
i'm your host steve garrett with me
9:57
today is corvette quality brand manager
9:59
jeff strasser in this second segment
10:01
we're going to talk about jeff's start
10:03
with general motors jeff talk to me
10:05
about how you got your job with general
10:07
motors sure as i mentioned earlier i was
10:10
in the technical field quite a bit i
10:12
worked for two different automotive
10:14
dealers i worked for a chrysler dealer
10:16
right out of high school i did a brief
10:18
stint there and then actually i went to
10:21
start working for general motors but in
10:23
the capacity of a uaw member working the
10:26
line
10:26
so this was back in 78 people might
10:29
remember we had some issues 78 79 oil
10:34
prices were going high people were
10:36
getting laid off i got laid off so i
10:37
worked 14 months got laid off and then
10:40
went to work for a chevrolet dealer went
10:42
to work for a chevrolet dealer for i
10:44
don't know almost a full year
10:47
and that's when i had the opportunity to
10:49
work for general motors they were
10:51
looking for a technician at the service
10:53
research center at that time and that's
10:55
where all the company cars are serviced
10:57
validation of new tools all that was
11:00
done i applied fortunately i had a
11:03
chance to work there and that's how i
11:04
started my career for the second time
11:06
first time was hourly second time coming
11:09
in was a salaried as a technician very
11:12
cool now how did you get over to quality
11:14
brand manager then so between that
11:17
opportunity and brand quality of course
11:20
there's many assignments i had between
11:22
there i went up and after working as a
11:25
technician for enough time went to work
11:28
in technical assistance with pontiac
11:30
spent some time there and then i wanted
11:32
to go out to the field to understand how
11:34
our retailers work how to interact with
11:36
customers i then become a district
11:39
service manager where i called on the
11:42
largest district for pontiac and that's
11:44
in metro detroit for a little short
11:46
while and then things changed with
11:48
pontiac of course they dissolved and
11:51
then i came back into central office
11:53
because general motors thought this
11:55
guy's got a lot of technical ability
11:57
let's get them into brand quality and at
11:59
that time i started as a grand am brand
12:02
quality manager then moved on to a sun
12:04
fire then i did a little stent in the
12:07
joint venture world working with toyota
12:09
on the pontiac vibe and then chevrolet
12:12
avail went into chevrolet and at that
12:14
time he said you know what i wanted
12:16
something a little more complicated a
12:18
little more upscale told my director i'd
12:20
like to have a different job within a
12:22
week they promoted me as the cadillac
12:25
srx brain quality manager there i sat
12:28
for 10 years while the lucky gentleman
12:31
and i honored this guy very much art
12:33
spong he was the corvette brand quality
12:35
manager i approached him and i said art
12:38
you know when you retire you know who
12:40
would like that job and of course it was
12:43
me so i waited 12 years to take that job
12:46
on and i'm telling you right now i
12:48
couldn't be any more honored now what
12:50
year was that how long you've been with
12:52
corvette as the brand quality manager
12:54
that would have been once we launched
12:55
the c7 in 2013. gotcha so really
12:59
corvette is kind of what you targeted
13:02
your ultimate experience then right oh
13:04
absolutely when i came into brand
13:06
quality yeah the luxury cars were fine
13:08
yeah entry-level cars were okay
13:11
but absolutely the pinnacle is a
13:13
corvette i think most of our brain
13:15
quality managers aspire to that pinnacle
13:18
job but there's a lot that comes with it
13:20
of course taking care of the customers
13:22
dealers and of course corvettes never
13:25
die so you're dealing with current
13:27
product i've seen some 1988 looking for
13:30
parts looking for help on what we need
13:32
to do for it so my job is from cradle to
13:35
grave all the way through that's awesome
13:38
that's how it is well that raises an
13:40
interesting question then jeff talk
13:42
about the differences between brand
13:44
quality manager for cadillac versus
13:46
corvette absolutely that's a good one
13:48
because when i came in i sort of knew
13:51
the expectations of a cadillac customer
13:53
and and they're extremely high of course
13:56
but going into the corvette world is an
13:59
eye-opener not only have an individual
14:02
that knows the product sometimes they're
14:05
engineers they're also very passionate
14:07
about the product but they also have
14:10
extremely high expectations
14:12
so coming from cadillac yeah it's a
14:14
great experience good coming over to the
14:17
corvette you need one technical
14:19
experience you need to know the product
14:21
you need to know how to talk to the
14:23
customers you need to know how to talk
14:25
their talk it's a great responsibility
14:27
well we all know that corvette owners
14:29
are very passionate about their cars and
14:31
they give you guys a lot of feedback
14:33
which is awesome it's neat to interact
14:34
with the corvette owners and enthusiasts
14:36
isn't it absolutely to hear their
14:39
stories some people have owned corvettes
14:41
from 1953
14:43
those are the individuals i say you've
14:45
paid my salary more than once or twice
14:47
i'll help and do whatever i can for you
14:50
and there's many of those customers
14:52
that's what i feel for they treat the
14:54
car like they would a family member and
14:57
that's one of the things that i really
14:59
captured on coming over to the corvette
15:01
because you don't experience that with
15:03
any other brands or models but on the
15:05
corvette you see that type of treatment
15:08
it's amazing it is amazing well buddy
15:10
let's take our final break when we come
15:12
back we're going to talk exactly about
15:13
what a brand quality manager does for

19:06
or call them at
19:09
zero 833-840-5 three three four i'm your
19:11
host steve garrett with me today is jeff
19:13
strasser the corvette brand quality
19:15
manager in this third and final segment
19:17
we're going to talk about exactly what
19:19
that is jeff talk about what your job
19:22
description is as brand quality manager
19:24
for corvette sure absolutely it's a
19:27
great assignment so as brand quality
19:29
manager we were actually represent the
19:31
dealers our field service staff
19:33
personnel and what we do is we identify
19:36
any emerging issues either parts
19:40
something in our service information
19:42
something product wise on the car that
19:45
feedback then comes back to us as brand
19:47
quality managers there's i think roughly
19:49
78 of us some of them are platform
19:52
engineers platform brand quality
19:53
managers meaning you're responsible for
19:56
one car there's also brand quality
19:59
managers for powertrain so we have one
20:01
for engines transmissions rear axles we
20:04
also have them for electric batteries
20:07
for our ota over the air system we have
20:10
brand quality managers and each one of
20:12
those brand quality managers identifies
20:14
the issues and then we have ways of
20:16
escalating those issues making sure that
20:20
the appropriate people get involved to
20:22
root cause what the issue was and then
20:24
if it is the technical issue that our
20:26
dealers need to know about we then as
20:28
brand quality managers generate the
20:31
service bulletins or put in the requests
20:33
for campaigns which go out to our
20:35
dealers wow it's the final side of it so
20:38
it comes in as a quality issue and it
20:41
goes out as a fix how do we fix the car
20:43
that's cool now i know you've got to
20:45
probably work with corvette plant
20:47
manager kai spandy very very closely
20:49
talk about your relationship with kai
20:51
and the whole bga assembly plant well
20:54
ty's a busy man so he has a quality team
20:57
and a quality assurance group to handle
21:00
those type of issues and if he has an
21:02
issue he'll come to me directly it's
21:03
usually a personal thing that i need to
21:05
take care of him for but most of the
21:07
plant people they know me very well they
21:09
know what my assignment is we work
21:11
extremely well i've worked with so many
21:14
plants one two three four five eight
21:16
different plants now and out of all of
21:18
them bowling green is certainly the
21:20
pinnacle they all know what they're
21:22
building they all know we're building a
21:24
customer's dream and they pay good money
21:27
for they take pride in what they're
21:29
building so any type of issues i have
21:31
i'm glad i have bowling greens back
21:34
they'll help me any way that they
21:35
possibly can from hey this is how we
21:38
adjust this to get rid of this noise or
21:40
in some cases offering to ship out parts
21:43
for me if the dealer needs it very cool
21:45
one of the things i love about the
21:47
corvette team is they interact with
21:49
owners talk about how an owner might get
21:52
to interact with you maybe at a show or
21:54
something like that that's gonna be
21:56
really cool for you isn't it yes
21:58
absolutely it's a great honor and i love
22:00
speaking directly there's no better way
22:02
of talking to somebody and that's face
22:04
to face so you can see their passion
22:06
what they have and in some cases if they
22:08
brought their car to the event i'm
22:10
saying let's go look at your car let's
22:12
go take a walk there's no better seeing
22:14
it in person to see what's going on so
22:17
yes we take very much pride and get a
22:19
chance to talk directly with our
22:21
consumers or our customers hearing their
22:23
stories about their car
22:25
what issues they like what opportunities
22:28
we have to make the car better that's
22:30
what we really strive on is all right
22:32
you might not know it but we are
22:34
listening not only when we're face to
22:36
face but also through other surveys that
22:38
general motors sends out we look at that
22:40
data and all right what can we do to
22:42
better the product so everyone on the
22:44
corvette team feels that same way it
22:46
takes a while to get on the corvette
22:48
team you need to have the right stuff to
22:50
be part of this team that's true that's
22:52
very true you attend a lot of shows and
22:54
a lot of events talk about that that has
22:56
to be really rewarding oh yes so most of
22:59
the major corvette events we've toned
23:02
back some of them some of the imsa races
23:04
you'll have a corvette chorale you'll
23:06
have some corvette team members there
23:08
and then on the bigger shows the bash
23:11
the anniversary event this year will be
23:13
out at carlisle and you can find us at
23:15
the gm tent if you're looking for me i'm
23:18
usually there if not there i'm out in
23:21
the parking lot or somewhere else in the
23:23
venue speaking with a customer looking
23:25
at their car you can ask for me usually
23:28
the engineers there if there is a
23:29
dealership concern a customer has a
23:32
warranty question whatever they will
23:35
always direct those customers over to me
23:37
to handle them that's cool jeff you're
23:39
one of corvette's biggest problem
23:41
solvers for both the team and the
23:43
consumer as well give me some real life
23:45
stories about how you've assisted either
23:47
bowling green assembly plant or a
23:49
corvette owner that really illustrates
23:51
your role with the team well in some of
23:54
these cases when we're live that's the
23:56
greatest time to be able to help
23:58
somebody and one of the stories i will
24:00
never ever forget is we have a campaign
24:03
out there on the c6 generation cars for
24:06
the clutch master cylinder if the
24:09
fluid's not flushed on a regular basis
24:11
certainly that's not good for the seals
24:13
in that clutch the master cylinder may
24:15
fail so you might push the foot down to
24:17
the floor and you won't get a clutch so
24:19
it seems like corvette's a car allow
24:21
i'll always have a corvette owner that
24:23
will encounter this issue and it could
24:25
have been remedied by just making sure
24:28
your fluid was flushed but sometimes
24:29
they buy it used and they don't
24:31
understand what went on so every event i
24:34
have these customers and some of them
24:36
really have never had an opportunity
24:38
what do i do how do i get my car fixed
24:40
and those are the ones that i get
24:42
involved in first off i get the
24:44
appropriate people involved roadside so
24:46
we can get the car to a dealer at that
24:48
time then i get in touch with the dealer
24:50
just to make sure that they understand
24:52
hey this is going to be covered under
24:54
our special policy they'll take care of
24:56
that if there's any need for parts i'll
24:58
assist with that but the greatest
25:00
benefit is the following year when i
25:03
come back to carlisle and i see that
25:05
individual and they say jeff because of
25:08
your help i went out and bought another
25:10
corvette or i still have that car and i
25:13
still remember it those are the things
25:15
that really take heart that i was able
25:18
to make a memorable bad situation to
25:21
turn to a good one that's what i strive
25:23
for turn to bad to good that's a great
25:26
story i'm sure you have a bunch of
25:27
others don't you oh yeah there's cases
25:29
where a customer would just take
25:31
delivery it was a transportation damage
25:34
or something and they're really finicky
25:36
about their pain now i can't do every
25:39
car painted panels but the plant
25:42
understands as well how the customers
25:44
are in these situations if it's our
25:47
fault general motorspot i reach out to
25:49
the plant fortunately i've got a good
25:51
relationship with them they'll hear my
25:53
story and if they agree and they're the
25:55
ones that paint the part they'll help by
25:58
shipping a painted panel out but there's
26:00
several panels that are not painted by
26:02
the plant you'd be surprised and those
26:04
are the ones i can't help with but
26:06
anytime i've gone to the plant for a
26:08
park that cca is waiting on inventory on
26:10
but i got a customer out there waiting
26:13
for a part and the plant is able to ship
26:15
it i'll reach out to the plant they're
26:17
my angels i call them they'll ship that
26:19
part out for the customer that's amazing
26:21
buddy thank you so much for taking the
26:23
