canadiancorvetforum.com welcoming
3:06
corvette enthusiasts from around the
3:08
my guest on corvette today is a walking
3:10
encyclopedia of corvette and chevrolet
3:13
he's written books called corvette by
3:15
the numbers and chevrolet by the numbers
3:18
he is one of the nation's top collector
3:21
he was also the editor of a magazine
3:23
called corvette fever
3:24
well that magazine folded but now alan
3:27
has revived the publication he's the
3:30
and corvette fever lives again as a
3:32
matter of fact later on in the corvette
3:35
you'll have a chance to win a
3:36
subscription to corvette fever magazine
3:39
meet alan calvin alan welcome to
3:42
hey steve it's so great to be on your
3:44
show heard a lot about it i guess you're
3:46
in this deal for about a year now and
3:48
it's just awesome really looking forward
3:51
the corvette people out there and
3:53
talking about what's great about this
3:55
i'm glad to have you on and we want to
3:57
talk about corvette fever magazine and
3:59
give away some subscriptions but
4:01
let's talk about your early years first
4:04
up in kentucky when did you realize you
4:08
well really in actuality i wasn't the
4:12
my mom basically kept everything every
4:15
toy that i ever played with
4:16
etc and she saved every piece of paper i
4:19
think i ever drew on and she told me one
4:21
time that the first legible thing that i
4:25
wow so i guess i've had oil in my veins
4:28
i was born two or three years old i've
4:33
fascinated by automobiles that's very
4:35
cool hey talk about the time when you
4:37
saw your first corvette and knew
4:39
that was your car you know it's sort of
4:41
interesting i was raised in you know a
4:43
little town in kentucky
4:45
i think there was like one corvette in
4:48
at the most at any given time wow you
4:51
know we did have a chevy dealership but
4:54
pickup trucks and camaros and such like
4:56
that it was later in life
4:58
where the first quarterback i remember
4:59
seeing was a split window could 63 split
5:03
and that's still my favorite car the
5:05
uniqueness of it being a split window
5:07
one year only i've just always loved
5:10
ended up finding a watch i wore for
5:12
years and years and years
5:14
it was a split window coupe i think it
5:16
was a fossil watt that they had made
5:18
and so i got one of those and wore it
5:20
for years and years and so i think that
5:22
that's always been my favorite car
5:24
favorite corvette it was later on where
5:26
i was really starting to be around them
5:27
as i got older wow i would love to find
5:30
that fossil watch because
5:31
just like you allen my first wow moment
5:34
with corvette was that 63 split window
5:37
i would love to have one of those fossil
5:38
watches that would be so cool
5:40
i'll send you what i have on it i'll
5:42
send you a picture of it maybe you can
5:43
find it on ebay they say everything's
5:45
that would be so cool so do you own a
5:49
what's currently in your garage i've
5:51
owned a couple of corvettes
5:52
i bought the first one as a project car
5:56
we worked with mid-america motorworks we
5:58
did 16 articles when i was at corvette
6:00
fever the original corvette fever we
6:02
ended up selling that car
6:04
then i bought another one my wife never
6:06
got to drive that the 2001 c5
6:09
and um it was a stick and my wife never
6:12
got to drive it and so
6:14
after that car went down the road to a
6:16
new owner it was actually given away
6:18
at fun fest one year wow i got another
6:22
it was an automatic so my wife was
6:24
finally able to drive the car and she
6:26
really loved it she's real pretty blonde
6:28
so she looked really good in it
6:29
i bet she did as a matter of fact it's
6:31
the same way with my wife
6:33
my wife cannot drive a stick and my c7
6:37
she can't drive it but i need to get her
6:39
into a corvette that's an automatic as
6:41
yep you know i'm looking forward as the
6:43
magazine progresses i'm gonna get some
6:45
type of a project car whether it's a c2
6:48
or a c6 or a c5 again i'm going to get
6:51
into one here pretty soon again very
6:53
nice now you're an accomplished magazine
6:55
writer you've been doing that for 35
6:58
talk about your writing career and what
7:00
magazines you've written for
7:02
you know i started out i went to school
7:05
civil engineer and i did that for about
7:08
but i was always dabbling in cardum you
7:10
know i thought well maybe i could write
7:13
and so i bought a nikon camera and
7:15
started to go to different car shows
7:17
and pull different cars out to be able
7:20
to shoot and so then i was able to
7:21
have something to sell i always liked
7:25
and so i did some how-to stuff i was
7:27
sort of a numbers guy numbers matching
7:30
sure the list is sort of long but i
7:32
obviously wrote for corvette fever i
7:34
is a columnist and did a few articles
7:38
on muncie transmissions prior to me
7:40
coming on board as the editor
7:42
i wrote for let's see super chevy muscle
7:45
i wrote for vet views for years and
7:49
corvette and chevy trader i wrote for
7:52
mustang trader i did some high
7:56
articles automotive restore pontiac
7:59
enthusiasts old cars weekly chevy high
8:04
and then also corvette magazine.com
8:07
the walkers and zip products alan that's
8:09
an impressive list of car
8:11
and corvette magazines what were some of
8:13
your favorite articles that you like to
8:16
i always like to find really rare stuff
8:20
write about things that most people
8:21
didn't really know existed
8:23
when i was doing my research for my
8:26
the proof of the 1965 m22
8:30
prototype transmission the rock crusher
8:32
transmission they only built
8:33
57 of them and i was able to nail all
8:36
that down with the production totals
8:37
from the muncie transmission plant so
8:40
pulled even though i've done feature
8:42
work and stuff like that it's mostly
8:44
rarity rarity sort of drives my spirit
8:47
i've always tried to come up with that
8:49
trying to educate people what's correct
8:51
what's right and so i've used some of
8:53
the content that i've created over the
8:56
my books my book projects that's where i
8:58
ended up that's very cool and you also
9:00
owned a company called calvin media
9:03
talk about cmg and what they did too i
9:07
i was living in dayton ohio at the time
9:09
i had lots of guys in the industry that
9:11
you know i was fooling around with drag
9:13
racers and circle track racers and i
9:15
sort of ran in those circles and so
9:17
i got the opportunity to start doing
9:20
work i did a few posters for ohio george
9:24
cool the only poster that's ever been
9:28
and so i started continuing to pick up
9:31
ended up hiring several people
9:34
i made it call the media group we were
9:36
able to do a lot of catalog
9:38
work and that kind of thing catalog copy
9:41
advertising those kinds of things that's
9:44
so you have a really well-rounded
9:46
background in automotive thanks
9:48
you bet alan let's take our first break
9:50
and when we come back we're going to
9:52

11:07
okay through the red door we outlive our
11:10
money we have to rely on our kids
11:12
we're stuck on a fixed income it's
11:15
that would suck but through the blue
11:17
door our money outlives us
11:19
we retire on our terms our kids stay our
11:22
not our caretakers we make work optional
11:25

and now back to corvette today with your
12:03
and my husband steve garrett hey thanks
12:06
for listening to corvette today i'm your
12:08
host steve garrett with me today is
12:10
alan calvin the new owner of corvette
12:14
in this second segment we're going to
12:16
talk about some of the other books that
12:18
also some of the companies he's owned
12:20
now alan you owned a nationally known
12:22
chevy reproduction parts company
12:24
called cnc automotive reproductions talk
12:27
about that real quick because
12:29
that's some really interesting stuff
12:31
yeah i was a camaro guy a lot
12:33
in my life right i've owned a z269028
12:37
i've owned a big block 396
12:39
four-speed ss car and so i was always
12:42
into camaros and so i decided well
12:45
maybe there's some parts out there this
12:46
was really early this was like
12:48
82 83 84 and i thought well
12:52
i wouldn't mind starting a company and
12:54
maybe i could do some reproduction stuff
12:56
i had some friends of general motors at
12:58
the time they didn't have
12:59
a system where you could go to equity
13:01
management and be able to pull prints
13:03
the way that promoters would want you to
13:05
so anyway i was able to get the prints
13:07
out of gm for the chambered exhaust
13:11
wow the chambered exhaust was offered on
13:15
as an option well it was originally an
13:17
oem for some of the cars
13:19
early in the model year and then it was
13:21
always optional for cars that didn't
13:24
for the factory is an oe installation
13:28
meet a guy at a large car collection i
13:30
was able to raise the money to be able
13:32
to build the tooling
13:33
i went to a tier 3 supplier in ohio for
13:36
exhaust systems that was supplying
13:38
general motors at the time
13:39
we were able to build the complete
13:41
chambered exhaust i came up with all the
13:43
hangers for it i came up with all the
13:46
researched all of that it was a great
13:48
project we sold thousands of them at the
13:50
time and i built it out of 409.72 wall
13:53
409 stainless with a
13:55
and then the internal tube is crimped
13:58
it's a three inch muffler that's crimped
14:00
there's two that are underneath
14:02
the floorboard that run down the drive
14:04
shaft and then there's two behind it
14:05
takes the place of the transverse
14:07
and then there's an internal tube inside
14:10
that three inch tube and so
14:11
i actually manufactured that internal
14:14
tube in 304 stainless and they're still
14:16
out there on the road
14:17
i get contacted all the time hey i still
14:19
got your chambered exhaust on my car
14:21
still sounds like the day it was built
14:23
that's amazing that's great
14:24
here we are 30 40 years later now you
14:27
also wrote a four-part
14:28
book series called chevrolet by the
14:30
numbers talk about that book series
14:33
and is that still available oh yeah it's
14:35
still available in fact
14:36
i sell them direct to the public off on
14:38
my website alancolvin.com
14:40
like i said i was an engineer i just got
14:43
married i was on a big engineering job
14:45
that came to an end and so i was laid
14:47
off drawing some unemployment and i
14:49
always carried around this little book
14:51
and i talked about this in the
14:52
introduction of all those books of how
14:54
the whole project started
14:56
and i would it would write down and
14:58
research and write down and so if i was
15:01
i would go to swap meets and car shows
15:04
within a couple hour radius went to
15:06
carlisle several times
15:08
and i would always carry that little
15:09
book around with me and
15:11
people would always see that i was
15:12
looking up keeping track of what i was
15:14
doing and what i was looking for
15:16
i had one guy offer me like 500 for this
15:19
little bound book in my hand
15:21
one time he says i don't care i've got
15:23
the money right here i'll pay you for it
15:25
oh my gosh i can't do that dude because
15:28
this is the only one i've got
15:29
but it just sort of gave me thinking
15:32
it is really needed that people really
15:34
need to know what's really was
15:36
installed on these cars and so that
15:39
several year process uh it started out
15:42
one book and i was able to finally get
15:45
clearance to be able to go inside
15:48
go inside the tonneau one engine plant
15:51
the flint engine plant
15:52
the muncie transmission plant the
15:54
delcorini plant in indiana
15:56
i went to all these plants and was able
15:58
to pull all these records out
16:01
that would verify okay what is the
16:03
original drivetrain for all
16:05
chevy vehicles from 1955 through 1975
16:10
and so that one book turned into four
16:13
i wrote corvette by the numbers by
16:15
itself and let's talk about corvette by
16:17
the numbers that came out in 2002
16:19
talk about the awards that book received
16:21
as well and that can still be purchased
16:23
isn't that correct that's right yep all
16:25
five of my books are still in print
16:27
they're selling really well i actually
16:30
when the first books were sold i've sold
16:32
over 130 000 copies of those books
16:35
i think the number now i'm over 6 000
16:39
for corvette by the numbers
16:40
wow but it took a while my wife says
16:43
that everything when i was writing these
16:45
books revolved around
16:46
writing the books i was working
16:48
part-time i work part-time for airborne
16:50
once and i would get up at five o'clock
16:52
in the morning and work until one
16:54
get home by two work till 11 or 12 and
16:57
get up and do it all over again
16:58
wow she said it was like i was in
17:01
and so after the four were done and i
17:04
finished the last one the corvette book
17:07
we can't do this ever again you're gonna
17:10
have to find a new place to live
17:12
if you do another one so i took the hint
17:14
and said well i won't do any more
17:16
that's funny that's a great story though
17:18
you know alan you've been involved in a
17:20
lot of car clubs talk about some of the
17:22
car clubs you've been in
17:23
over your years well i was involved with
17:26
the national monte carlo's owners
17:28
association because i owned an ss monte
17:31
carlo 70th monte carlo
17:33
at one time i was a member of the
17:35
society of automotive historians i got
17:37
involved with them because
17:39
of them being record seekers and trying
17:41
to save the history of the automobile
17:43
united states camaro club i was in it i
17:46
was like their first 10 people that
17:48
joined that that was based out of dayton
17:50
ohio which is where i was living at the
17:52
i wrote articles from them jim worth
17:54
from worth and associates
17:56
actually started the club and so i was
17:59
american chevelle and susie society aces
18:02
that was started by a friend of mine
18:04
chuck hanson who used to be on
18:05
tv it was one of the first automotive
18:09
he had vet club for quite a long time
18:11
national corvette restore society i was
18:14
them for years and years sharing
18:16
information pulling information from
18:18
their judging manuals
18:20
verifying that what i was pulling out of
18:23
when i was writing my books i was making
18:26
right but there were some things that
18:28
i've figured out that weren't
18:30
correct in their judging manuals it was
18:32
just part of the process
18:34
i was also in the 6566 full-size chevy
18:37
club i was a senior judge
18:39
and an advisor for many of those clubs
18:41
it's been a great ride i haven't been as
18:43
involved as much in the last few years
18:46
but i've been a lot of clubs and done a
18:47

you're listening to the corvette today
20:50
podcast with steve garrett
20:55
hey thanks for listening to corvette
20:56
today the podcast that talks about
20:58
everything corvette i'm your host steve
21:00
garrett with me today on the podcast
21:03
is alan calvin the publisher and owner
21:06
of corvette fever magazine alan you were
21:08
once the editor of this publication
21:10
talk about that time and what happened
21:12
to that publication when you were editor
21:15
i was actually writing resto clinic as a
21:18
at the time this was in what 2000 2001
21:22
2002. we decided i was working for
21:25
it was high stress and so my wife said
21:27
we need to get out of here and so let's
21:30
i was writing for several magazines vet
21:34
at the time and so i thought well let's
21:35
go to florida and chill out
21:37
and maybe we can have dinner or
21:39
something with somebody at one of the
21:40
magazines and maybe be able to write
21:42
some of this off and so
21:44
that's exactly what happened i went to
21:46
dinner with one of the executives which
21:48
with prime media corvette fever had been
21:50
sold it was in the prime media portfolio
21:53
went to dinner had no expectation of
21:56
anything other than having a great time
21:58
and during that dinner executive said
22:00
would you consider throwing your hat
22:03
take uh ronnie hartman's place as editor
22:06
and i was dumbfounded i had no idea what
22:10
and we sort of walked out and looked at
22:12
each other after the dinner i said well
22:14
i definitely would consider anything and
22:16
so we walked out of there
22:18
that ended up working out we were able
22:22
i was able to come to florida and take
22:24
over the editorship of corvette fever
22:26
and it was definitely a great move for
22:29
obviously the publication has been gone
22:30
for a little while but you've recently
22:32
revived the magazine
22:34
talk about the details of that in the
22:36
restart and what your mission is
22:38
for this edition of corvette fever
22:41
yeah that's been what 11 12 years ago
22:43
and as these other magazines have shut
22:46
basically everything's gone a portfolio
22:48
when i was with corvette fever was over
22:50
70 magazines and basically
22:52
all those are gone except maybe one you
22:55
know magazine industries totally changed
22:57
landscape is totally different and so
23:00
this got to a point where i thought you
23:02
maybe there is a possibility that i can
23:04
get control of the trademark
23:06
and relaunch corvette fever and so i
23:08
started making some phone calls
23:10
got an intellectual properties attorney
23:13
get control of that trademark and so i'm
23:16
super excited about it because
23:17
we have a totally different business
23:19
model now it's digital
23:21
and yet it's also a printed magazine i'm
23:24
we've launched three weeks ago maybe
23:26
we're having a great response
23:28
that's fantastic now talk about the
23:30
different subscriber options that you do
23:32
for corvette fever allen we have a
23:34
digital subscription
23:36
the actual proprietary software that
23:38
we're using you can go online
23:40
it'll actually look at the magazine on
23:43
machine as far as a tablet a phone
23:46
a pc it automatically adjusts to
23:50
you're using i have a free option that
23:54
look at the digital flip book you'll be
23:55
able to look at past digital flip books
23:57
and the articles will be abridged in the
24:00
digital subscription
24:01
so there's not going to always be all
24:03
the content in the digital subscription
24:06
the majority of it probably 60 or 70
24:08
percent will be there
24:09
then we have a one-year subscription
24:12
a paid subscription for 65 you'll get
24:15
the same digital flip book
24:17
you'll get access to the past digital
24:19
footbooks as we publish them
24:21
you'll have full-length article access
24:23
and we're going to do a quarterly
24:25
publication and some swags and some
24:28
decals and that kind of thing come with
24:30
that first year subscription
24:31
the printed publication is going to be
24:34
the best cover the best paper it's
24:37
probably going to be at least 200
24:39
and possibly even 300 pages long every
24:42
if you go for a two-year subscription
24:44
like i said it's all the same up until
24:46
the point where now you're gonna just
24:48
push those printed publications out
24:50
you'll get eight of those
24:51
and you'll get the decals the c1 through
24:54
and you'll get an embroidered hat which
24:58
31 discount for ninety nine dollars per
25:01
two year subscription
25:02
and amazingly we've had quite a few
25:04
people sign up so far and amazingly
25:06
most of the people that are signing up
25:08
for a paid for subscription
25:10
are going for the 99 dollar two-year
25:14
i don't know maybe it's we're giving
25:16
away a great hat so maybe that's what's
25:18
i choose to believe that people know who
25:20
i am they know that we're gonna do a
25:23
with the content we're setting new
25:25
standards we're plowing new ground here
25:27
i choose to believe that they believe in
25:29
where we're going and where we're headed
25:30
and we're going to have a great product
25:32
alan that's fantastic and talk about
25:34
your social media links as well because
25:36
corvette fever is on all social media
25:38
too that's right yeah we've got a
25:40
current facebook group that we've just
25:42
launched we're going to be going it into
25:44
instagram pretty soon
25:45
that's fantastic well let's give away
25:49

25:51
