welcoming corvette owners from around
3:09
the world
3:10
my guest on corvette today is a man that
3:12
has been around cars
3:13
all of his life whether it was his
3:15
father or his grandfather he's been
3:17
involved in the automotive industry
3:19
since he was
3:20
six years old today his family runs one
3:22
of the largest
3:23
and the best auctions in the world it's
3:25
my pleasure to have frank meekum from
3:27
the mecum auctions
3:28
on the show frank welcome to corvette
3:31
today
3:32
thanks steve it's great to be on i've
3:34
been looking forward to it
3:35
well thank you i appreciate you saying
3:36
that hey let's start
3:38
back in the early days frank when did
3:40
you start working in the family business
3:43
well the auction started in 1988 i was
3:46
six years old
3:47
but really i started hanging around more
3:50
a couple years after
3:51
when i was eight just hanging up on the
3:53
auction block listening to the
3:55
auctioneers
3:56
i was always in awe of it standing down
3:58
on the block with dad
3:59
putting sold stickers on the cars which
4:01
if you watch an auction today
4:03
he still does that it's just one of our
4:05
trademarks
4:06
having that sold sticker put on a car
4:08
it's really been a great ride but my
4:11
first
4:11
job for me i was in college and i
4:14
started working bitter registration
4:16
signing up bidders working in the office
4:18
alongside my mom at the time
4:20
and that was really my first start and
4:21
now you're the vice president of
4:23
consignments
4:24
talk about what that job entails frank
4:26
our consignment team
4:28
has really excelled over the last years
4:31
we can sign over 15 000 cars a year
4:34
which is a huge number to over 13
4:38
collector car auctions per year so we
4:40
are in charge of
4:42
gathering the inventory making sure
4:45
placement of the inventory and getting
4:47
the docket set for the upcoming auctions
4:49
for
4:49
potential bidders and you've got three
4:51
brothers are they in the auction
4:53
business with you guys as well with you
4:54
and your dad
4:55
that's the best part about our business
4:57
all three of my brothers work
4:58
alongside us every day my oldest brother
5:01
dan
5:02
runs our tractor division he started
5:04
that over 10 years ago
5:05
and it has really taken off my brother
5:08
ben
5:09
is in charge of our bid goes on on site
5:11
which is off the block sales
5:13
and all of our sponsorships wow and then
5:15
my youngest brother harry we've always
5:17
said he had to have been the smartest
5:19
one
5:19
he's the accountant of the family and
5:22
keeps track of all the money
5:23
he's the bean counter isn't he yep
5:25
that's awesome
5:26
talk about your grandfather edward
5:28
because i know that he was in the car
5:29
business and he passed that on to your
5:31
dad
5:32
and your dad passed that on to you but
5:33
your grandfather was really
5:35
in the car industry pretty deep wasn't
5:37
he grandpa started working
5:40
as a salesman at a packard store
5:43
and was in the car business the rest of
5:45
his life
5:46
in many different ways different
5:48
dealerships all through that time
5:50
my favorite memory was my first car
5:53
we're standing at an auction in des
5:54
moines iowa
5:55
i was probably 12 or 13 years old at the
5:58
time
5:59
a little 64 and a half mustang came on
6:02
the auction block
6:03
he looked to me and said we're going to
6:04
buy this so he tells me to go bid on it
6:06
and
6:07
we bid on it and at the time that's 93
6:10
94 somewhere in there so this car brings
6:14
seven eight grand which today it's 50 60
6:17
000
6:17
car nice little 289 with pony interior
6:20
just a great looking car after that
6:24
had been hooked ever since what a great
6:26
story that was your first bid
6:27
so you were able to actually bid on your
6:29
own car in your own auction
6:31
yep me and grandpa bought it and then we
6:33
ended up selling it later but when we
6:35
sold it i think we made
6:36
a thousand dollars on the car and i
6:38
thought i was the richest kid in the
6:39
world
6:40
absolutely right well frank let's take a
6:42
quick break and in segment number two
6:44

9:09
thanks for listening to corvette today
9:11
the podcast that talks about
9:13
everything corvette my guest today is
9:15
frank macomb from the mecum auctions
9:17
in segment number two we're going to
9:18
talk about what goes on during the
9:20
mekong auctions for game
9:22
day frank during this pandemic we talk
9:24
about precautions that are being taken
9:26
by everybody
9:27
and the mecum auction was down for a
9:29
little bit during the height of the
9:30
pandemic
9:31
talk about the measures that you guys
9:33
take now to ensure that everybody that
9:36
attends the auction
9:37
whether they work there or they are a
9:39
visitor and a bitter
9:40
what kind of precautions do you guys
9:42
take to make sure everybody's safe
9:44
well going into the pandemic everybody
9:46
was caught off guard we were especially
9:49
it really started for us just about a
9:51
year ago
9:52
we were at our glendale auction in
9:55
arizona
9:56
and that was the same weekend everything
9:58
just kind of came apart
10:00
all the sporting events started
10:01
canceling nba went down nhl went down
10:04
nascar went down
10:05
the ncaa tournament went down by the end
10:08
of our auction
10:09
we were the last live event in the
10:11
country wow
10:12
and watching it knowing that we're
10:14
getting ready to head into having issues
10:16
of our own
10:16
with more events coming up we lost five
10:19
auctions last year
10:20
due to the pandemic but we're still very
10:23
lucky
10:23
we got 11 auctions in after coming out
10:26
of the shutdown
10:27
when we started that if you had asked us
10:29
then if we thought we were going to get
10:30
that many in
10:31
we didn't know the answer so it was a
10:34
lot of hard work
10:35
going into that coming up with our plans
10:37
reworking them each and every time
10:39
getting to where we are now some of the
10:41
things that we did
10:42
were making sure temperature checks at
10:45
the door
10:46
mass for everybody spreading the crowds
10:48
out eliminating
10:49
the normal crowd style seating that you
10:52
see at any live collector car auction
10:54
and we went to
10:55
tables they were spread out six feet
10:57
apart two people to a table
10:59
just to really spread that crowd out
11:03
partitions in the office to keep
11:05
customers and staff
11:06
apart and safe and being able to do it
11:09
successfully
11:10
almost 12 months now it's really been a
11:12
lot of hard work
11:13
and a testament to our staff that never
11:16
gave up
11:16
and knew that we could do it and never
11:18
stop going forward and kept keeping a
11:20
great attitude
11:21
and online bidding has really
11:22
skyrocketed i know
11:24
talk about that and the new guidelines
11:26
that you have for online bidding
11:28
we've always had online bidding and
11:29
absentee bidding but
11:31
it has not been a large part of our
11:33
business
11:34
until coming out of the shutdown we're
11:36
averaging
11:37
less than 10 of our sales we're absentee
11:40
and really ramping up new systems
11:42
during the shutdown knowing that we're
11:44
gonna have to have
11:45
upgraded internet being able to upgrade
11:47
our internet and our
11:49
ability to do phone and inspections for
11:51
people that
11:52
weren't able to travel yet not
11:53
comfortable with traveling yet
11:55
but still want to be part of the hobby
11:57
that's the most important thing
11:59
people still want to be part of this our
12:01
hobby is a
12:02
very close-knit family and giving
12:05
everybody that opportunity to stay in
12:06
has been a big part of our success
12:08
coming out
12:09
now doing probably over 30 percent of
12:11
our sales going absentee
12:13
wow it was been a big part of our
12:15
success coming out of this that's
12:16
amazing
12:17
and restaurants seem to be very hot i'm
12:19
watching the shows
12:20
religiously and it seems like rusto mods
12:23
are really big right now
12:24
talk about rusto mods and how younger
12:26
bidders are gravitating
12:28
towards them i think about resto mods
12:31
the first resto mods i started seeing
12:33
was almost 20 years ago now when i first
12:35
started
12:36
full time out of college i remember
12:38
seeing a couple 67 corvettes
12:40
that they put ls motors and different
12:42
chassis on at our florida auction
12:44
almost 20 years ago and was the first
12:46
time i'd really seen that
12:48
and just thinking then what a cool
12:50
concept that they were doing
12:52
with those and now all genres are
12:53
covered under the restroom mods and
12:55
there's so many different varieties
12:57
and so many different choices it's
12:59
really become its own
13:01
section to our hobby and you're right it
13:03
is really taken off you see
13:05
so many and as soon as you see a car
13:08
you think wow they can't top that and
13:11
then
13:12
somebody comes back right over the top
13:14
and tops that it reminds you of what the
13:16
early hot rods were
13:17
somebody would set the bar for the best
13:19
hot rod out there and then somebody come
13:21
back and graze it over that
13:22
it's the same thing repeating itself
13:24
just in a little bit different way
13:26
and it's really become its own genre
13:28
it's very cool
13:30
as a matter of fact you know i watch
13:31
pretty religiously like i said before
13:33
and i love watching you on the block you
13:36
get really animated when you're working
13:38
a deal
13:39
talk about that intensity with your
13:41
relationship between
13:42
either you and the consignor or you and
13:44
the bitter
13:45
it really comes down to my absolute
13:49
love for the auction process like saying
13:51
earlier that's where i started sitting
13:53
up on the auction block
13:54
listening to the auctioneer's chant
13:56
watching the ringmen work
13:58
watching the team work i fell in love
14:01
with it in such a young age
14:02
and it was always what i wanted to do
14:05
it's always where i wanted to end up
14:07
and now being able to be a part of it
14:09
and having the greatest auction crew
14:11
in the world working around you just
14:14
makes it so much fun and that's where
14:15
that animation comes from
14:17
i'm just having the time of my life out
14:18
there being able to
14:20
meet new people that are bidders and
14:22
sellers everybody with a different story
14:24
everybody with a different car
14:26
that's really where that comes from and
14:28
i know that your job
14:30
is probably one of the most difficult
14:32
during the auction
14:33
there's a delicate balance it seems like
14:35
between getting a seller to maybe lift
14:37
the reserve
14:38
or getting a buyer to go higher on a bid
14:40
on a car
14:41
it takes a master negotiator like
14:43
yourself to pull that off and pull it
14:45
off well
14:46
that's one of the secrets to making
14:48
auction success
14:50
that's how we separate ourselves from
14:52
some of the other companies out there
14:54
our job we've always looked at it is to
14:57
find the right balance where
14:59
we get our buyers to give that little
15:01
bit extra
15:03
and our sellers to take a little bit
15:06
less
15:06
and everybody walking away feeling like
15:09
they won that's been mekum auction's
15:12
greatest success from the beginning of
15:14
time
15:14
that's how dad always visioned it in his
15:16
head that's what his love was
15:19
and it's just filtered down over the
15:21
years and it's become
15:22
really part of our brand that's how you
15:24
guys sell so many cars and over 15
15:26
000 consigned that's amazing frank let's
15:29
take our last break and coming up in
15:30
segment number three we're going to talk
15:32
about corvettes of the mecum auction

somehow knowing
16:14
there are only choices for retirement
16:16
okay
16:17
through the red door we outlive our
16:19
money we have to rely on our kids
16:21
we're stuck on a fixed income it's
16:23
terrifying yeah
16:24
that would suck but through the blue
16:26
door our money outlives us
16:28
we retire on our terms our kids stay our
16:30
kids
16:31
not our caretakers we make work optional
16:33
yes
16:34

and now back to corvette today with your
17:11
host
17:12
and my husband steve gary
17:15
hey thanks for listening to corvette
17:17
today i'm your host steve garrett with
17:19
me today
17:19
frank mkhim from the mecum auctions in
17:22
this final segment we're going to talk
17:23
about corvettes
17:24
and the part they play during the mecum
17:26
auctions frank we've had john crayman
17:29
on the podcast and he said that
17:31
corvettes make up a huge part of your
17:33
auction
17:34
talk about the roles that corvette plays
17:36
in the mecum auctions
17:38
well corvettes really started as being
17:40
one of the mainstays of makeup auctions
17:42
even before there was some income
17:43
auctions
17:44
dad first love was corvettes always was
17:47
when my grandpa had
17:49
the new pontiac store in moringo
17:51
illinois the little town that we grew up
17:53
in
17:54
dad had a little sports center where he
17:56
was selling corvettes and other sports
17:58
cars out of
17:58
and that's where the love really came
18:01
for him
18:02
being part of that early hobbyist of
18:04
corvettes in the late 70s
18:06
early 80s and it really just took
18:09
through the auctions over the years our
18:11
brand was
18:12
always corvettes and muscle cars and
18:14
we've grown so much past that that we do
18:16
everything now but it really started
18:17
with that core
18:18
of corvettes we've had the opportunity
18:21
to sell some of the most special
18:23
corvettes that were ever made
18:25
and we sell just the regular corvettes
18:27
that go to the everyday guy
18:29
and that's what our belief has always
18:30
been having something for everybody
18:32
and corvette is that car it's always
18:34
been the blue-collar sports car
18:36
it's americana that every american looks
18:39
to
18:40
owning a corvette as their sports car so
18:42
it's really been and it just fits with
18:44
our brand and our mentality that we've
18:47
always had something for everybody and
18:49
it's just the two brands fit
18:50
i want to jog your memory a little bit
18:52
frank talk about some of the more
18:54
memorable corvettes that have crossed
18:56
the auction block what was the gavel
18:58
price
18:59
which corvettes stand out to you in all
19:01
the years that you've been doing this
19:02
with your family business
19:04
there's so many special ones you can go
19:06
back to
19:07
it would have been it was actually my
19:09
21st birthday
19:11
we were at bloomington gold so that
19:13
would have been 2003.
19:16
we had the no mile under 20 miles
19:19
67 l88 corvette coupe wow
19:23
probably the most famous of the 67 l88s
19:26
and having the opportunity to sell that
19:28
car at that time
19:29
when it sold for over 600 000 at that
19:33
time
19:33
we thought that's the greatest thing
19:35
ever we know what those cars do today
19:37
but that is one of my earliest memories
19:40
of selling
19:40
just a special corvette and having the
19:42
opportunity i think
19:43
we've now sold four of the 2067 l88s now
19:47
wow that's always been a huge success
19:50
for ours
19:51
just sold the kissimmee the 63-06 big
19:54
tag car of mickey thompson
19:56
yes we've sold that car several times
19:59
that's the car in my memory that i've
20:01
always remembered
20:02
and then there's other corvettes that
20:03
haven't sold through the block that come
20:05
through my memory
20:06
and it's not that they're the most
20:08
expensive one of our family's personal
20:10
cars
20:10
is just a 67 390 horse corvette
20:14
that is nothing special that we've all
20:17
driven
20:18
that we've owned for probably over 25
20:20
years
20:21
wow that is just our family car but to
20:24
anybody else
20:25
it wouldn't be that meaningful but to us
20:27
it's one of the most special
20:29
corvettes out there that's cool that's
20:31
very cool to know that it's real it's a
20:32
true family car
20:34
your dad your brothers have driven it
20:35
you've driven it that's really cool
20:37
is there any generation or a year of
20:39
corvette that you see coming across the
20:41
block
20:42
more often or one that may be more
20:44
popular
20:45
the one you see a lot now and they made
20:48
so many of them
20:49
and for an entry-level person looking
20:51
for a corvette
20:53
there's nothing better than a c5
20:55
corvette
20:56
i think that generation it's such a good
20:59
car
21:00
they will drive forever it's just a pure
21:03
enjoyment to drive them
21:04
we see more and more of them coming
21:06
they're not overly expensive but
21:08
that's a car that i really look at is a
21:10
car that
21:11
really will keep the hobby going forever
21:13
yeah for sure
21:15
so is there a corvette frank that has
21:17
come across the block
21:18
and you look at it and say oh man i'd
21:20
love to have that one in my garage
21:23
every one of them
21:24
[Laughter]
21:27
that's a great answer i'm an addict
21:29
thief that's an awesome answer
21:32
that's fantastic i want them all the
21:34
best part i've
21:35
always loved the chase of cars going out
21:37
and finding the new car
21:39
enjoying it but i'm always moving on to
21:41
the next one
21:42
i love the c2s like everybody else i
21:45
don't fit in the c1
21:47
i've never really enjoyed those as much
21:49
so the couple that i've owned
21:50
i don't fit now you talked about the 67
21:53
that's there in the family garage
21:54
are there other corvettes maybe one or
21:56
two of the corvettes that you would love
21:58
to own
21:59
well i've actually have the one car that
22:02
i don't ever sell
22:03
it's nothing special but it was the
22:05
first corvette i ever bought on my own
22:08
we were selling a group of cars for bob
22:10
mcdorman i don't know if you remember
22:12
bob
22:12
i do bob was one of my dad's
22:16
closest friends and he had one of the
22:18
greatest corvette collections
22:20
i ever seen he was one of the largest
22:22
corvette dealers in the country
22:24
we were selling a group of his cars on
22:26
site at the dealership
22:27
and one of the cars that went through
22:30
was
22:31
his 2002 demo this is probably 2005 when
22:35
we had this auction
22:36
that 2002 he had had knee surgery so he
22:39
never drove it
22:40
it had no miles i bought it and i've
22:42
kept it ever since
22:43
that's amazing wow in the summer i take
22:46
my kids in it now and it's like the 67
22:48
it's nothing special but it was my first
22:50
corvette and my kids
22:52
have learned to enjoy it our favorite
22:54
thing is that first spring getting it
22:56
out of the garage
22:57
washing it with the kids when they're
23:00
done i have to redo it
23:03
but it's the fun that we have with it
23:05
the memories you have with your family
23:06
that's what the hobby is about
23:08
absolutely right it doesn't have to be a
23:10
special corvette per se
23:11
but it's special to you and your family
23:13
and that's what makes family memories
23:15
yep frank talk about some of the
23:17
upcoming mecum auctions
23:19
and how someone can attend or bid or
23:21
even sell their car
23:22
or their corvette possibly our next
23:24
auction
23:25
is the glendale we're looking to get
23:28
back to glendale
23:29
and have a great auction we have a great
23:32
lineup
23:33
we have a great lineup of corvettes we
23:35
just consigned just last week
23:37
a 67 l88 for the auction wow so it's
23:40
another opportunity to set the table for
23:43
another
23:44
special car to cross the mecum auction
23:46
block any bidder that wants to
23:48
attend they can go straight to
23:50
macomb.com register right on makeup.com
23:53
