2:53
what's happening with America Sports Car. Keith, welcome back to the show. We're past the American Independence
2:58
Day. Time to keep on moving forward, buddy. Yeah. Well, you know, we were also past the 70th birthday of the
3:03
Corvette, too. So, let me ask you something real quick, Steve. Did you drive your Corvette to work on Friday? Yes, I sure did.
3:09
Very good. That's good news. I know a lot of people did. I saw some of the pictures out on social media. 70th anniversary birthday. What a milestone.
3:15
So, congratulations. Absolutely. As a matter of fact, the world headquarters for Corvette today is here in my home. So, so what I did was
3:23
is I just pulled it out into the driveway so everybody could see it. Yeah. And that's what we joked about too
3:28
is pull it back out, put back in. Maybe take it around the block, go get some gas or something.
3:33
Exactly. You know, ice cream, gasoline, whatever it takes. Right. Whatever it takes. That's right. Well, buddy, let's start our first
3:40
segment, as we always do, with an update on production at the Bowling Green assembly plant. Absolutely. Well, of course, the
3:46
Corvette assembly plant did their annual summer shutdown over the Fourth of July week, and they are reopening on Monday,
3:51
July 10th. They'll be back to work today. The last production numbers for the Corvette Stingray that we have is
3:57
36,540 regular Stingrays and 3,853
4:03
70th anniversary models. So that's a total of 40,393 Stingrays. That number by itself would
4:08
be fantastic. But then we have the Z06 on top of it. We have 3,360 regular Z06s and then another 640 70th
4:16
anniversary models. So for Z06, that's a total of exactly 4,000 Z06s produced so
4:22
far. You add those two models up together, we're at 44,393 Corvettes produced so far for the 2023
4:28
model year. You know, I was looking at the calendar, Steve, there's approximately 8 weeks left for the 2023 model year. We're ending on September
4:35
1st this year. As we speculate, as we love to speculate, looking at that calendar, started counting up the
4:40
numbers. The plant can build like around 900 cars per week over the next 8 weeks. That's an additional 7,200 cars. Wow.
4:47
And that would put us right around 51,593. That's not enough to have the highest
4:52
production year ever. That's 1979 Corvette had 53,87.
4:57
But that number would be almost equal to the 51,547 Corvettes produced in 1984, which is the
5:04
second biggest production year ever for Corvettes. And of course, the 1984 model, they started that early because there was no 1983. So again, we think
5:11
this year's production is definitely going to be within the top three years of production. Just the question of where exactly it falls, but everything's
5:17
really coming together for the Corvette this model year for sure. That's fantastic news, buddy. And we even had
5:22
good news for quarter number two. GM produced over 9,000 Corvettes in Q2.
5:28
Yeah, for second quarter 2023, Chevrolet delivered 9,125 new Corvettes. It was an
5:33
increase of 5.37% over the same time period in 2022. And for the calendar year to date, we're running a little bit
5:39
behind from where we were last year. We're just 2.4% behind. We have 17,029
5:45
deliveries occurring January through June, whereas last year we had 17,441
5:50
for the same time period. So we're running about 400 cars behind. Again, these delivery numbers that we get from
5:55
General Motors are for US sales only, but again, it shows that I think we're pacing right where we really need to be
6:01
to have another very successful year. That's great. That's good news and healthy numbers for Q2. It was also good
6:07
to see, Keith. We reported on this our last news and headline show two weeks ago, but GM has issued a new TSB about
6:14
the engine ticking for the C8 Z06's LT6 engine. Yep, exactly. So, as we talked about,
6:20
some Z06 owners have reported an excessive ticking noise coming from their LT6 V8 engines. Now, there's
6:25
always going to be a little bit of a ticking because of the mechanical nature of the drivetrain, but this is something
6:30
that owners have really picked up on because it's kind of an out of sorts ticking that comes and goes. GM started
6:36
an investigation on this about two months ago. Now there is this TSB that fixes that. So if you believe your car
6:41
is one of these that has this excessive ticking noise, you can take it into the service department and the techs use
6:46
what's called a PicoScope to actually capture the noise coming from either the left bank or the right bank of the
6:51
engine. The really cool thing is this PicoScope graphs it out and it shows exactly where the engine noiseis
6:57
occurring and if it matches the pattern in the TSB, then your car has the ticking noise. What it turns out is it
7:02
just really needs to be an adjustment of the cam shaft caps moving forward. If they run that PicoScope on your car,
7:09
they find that it has the issue. It's one of these things where they can adjust. If the noise though comes from
7:14
the left bank of the engine, then they can do it with the engine in the car. But if it's the right bank, they actually have to drop the engine from
7:19
the car and then gain access to perform the repair that way. The good news is that one of the owners with a ticking
7:25
noise is a member over at the Minion Corvette forum. And he previously stated how his car was going to be one of the first to have this fix. And now that
7:31
it's over with, he says his car is like 95% better, much more quieter now. He's real happy with it. So that's the good
7:38
news. It can take a little bit again if you have a Cooper convertible and you have to do that rightand side where they had to drop the engine. But the good
7:44
news is it's nothing major and this is probably just something that was overlooked during assembly. Hopefully these procedures have already been fixed
7:50
so that any future ticking noises with this problem with the cam shaft caps is alleviated.
7:55
Yeah, definitely. And also, if you do own a Z06 or are buying a Z06, make sure you check underneath the car. We had a
8:02
little bit of an underbody problem with PDI, didn't we, Keith? Yeah, check your underbodies. This has
8:08
to do with the flat panels underneath the Z06. And unlike the Stingray, the C806 requires one of the underbody
8:14
panels to be reinstalled in the dealership. During the PDI, the pre-ely inspection, you want to look and make
8:20
sure that that's correct. So, unfortunately, these instructions weren't very clear about the panel's installation. And what happens is that
8:26
as you drive the car with the panels misaligned, actually air gets in between them and you'll see that it gaps down.
8:31
You can get little rocks in there too and stuff. So what you actually need to do is remove both panels and then put
8:37
the one ahead of the other and that seals it up. The guy that found this shoe again on the miden Corvette forum,
8:42
he posted a picture and said, "Is this normal?" And as all these other Z06 owners started looking, they're like, "Hey, I have that tune." And we find
8:48
that a lot of it actually comes from the R8C program. A lot of the cars that we see, our understanding is the
8:54
instructions on this weren't very clear at all. It's about a 30-minute fix. If you have access to a lift, if you have
8:59
jack stands, it can take a little longer, but anybody can do the fix themselves or you can take it into a dealership. There is a question. Our
9:05
friend John over at the Mid Corvette forum had his done. And the question was, who's going to pay for it? Because this was a mistake done during PDI. It
9:12
should be on Chevrolet's tab, but we haven't seen any news or reports that they're going to cover this. Just
9:17
something to keep an eye on. But if you look under your car, you'll definitely see if you have that issue. John had about 3,000 miles on his car already. It
9:24
was very noticeable, he said. Wow, that's kind of crazy for sure. But it's one of these things where
9:29
again, a little bit clearer instructions. Now that this news is out, hopefully the word will get out and people will be able to get those
9:35
underbody panels sealed up the correct way. There you go. It's just kind of growing pains with a new car like this, isn't
9:40
it, buddy? It always is. Always. Always is. And the National Corvette Museum has this super cool skywall and
9:47
it's a video display and they basically initiated that during the 70th anniversary exhibit launch.
9:52
Yeah, I'm really excited to see this. NCM President Sharon Bronner had mentioned this during the bash, but for
9:57
the launch of the 70th anniversary exhibit called An American Love Affair, they had this video skywall made its
10:03
debut within the NCM Sky. It's a video screen. I think it's about eight feet tall and it runs around the base of the
10:09
NCM Sky Dome. you know, the cars are parked in front of it and it's interactive so it can help tell the stories of the cars. It does really cool
10:16
displays where it can go multiple panels. You could see some of the previous races. I think of Daytona when
10:21
the two Corvettes were racing together. They're coming up to the finish line. They can run that on multiple panels. Some really neat stuff there. This was
10:28
actually debuted during that 70th anniversary exhibit. They showed off Corvettes ranging from the first year 1953 all the way up to the 2024
10:35
Corvette. And there about 300 people that attended that launch party on June 29th, the day before the Corvette's official birthday. That should be
10:41
running when we're up there for the anniversary show. So, I'm excited to see that September. I can't wait. That'll be awesome to see.

14:38
I'm your host Steve Garrett. With me is Keith Cornet from corvette blogger.com. In segment number two, we cover Corvette
14:44
racing and Corvette rumors. Keith, we got all sorts of races piling up all of a sudden, don't we?
14:49
Yeah. You know, we said this was going to be a busy time period for the Corvettes, especially the IMSA team. I think they do four races in seven weeks.
14:55
Wow. Yeah. We've got Corvettes racing on two different continents on Sunday. We had a race at Monza in Italy in the WC and
15:01
then of course at Canadian Tire Motorsports Park for the IMSA team. Of course, we recorded this prior to the race. We don't have those results to
15:07
share, but one of the benefits of having Corvettes race in multiple series is twice the amount of racing. So that's always great news in my book. Two weeks
15:13
ago, the number three C8 was in action at Watkins Glenn and Antonio Garcia and Jordan Taylor recorded their third
15:19
podium finish of the year. They finished third in class. There was a bit of controversy there. You know, it's been
15:24
interesting because a lot of these races, we've seen this for Corvette racing this year. It's not normal for us to be penalized like we have been. We're
15:31
finding out it's not our fault. There's a bit of controversy. Again, the number 23 Aston Martin drove through the
15:36
Corvette's pit box and hit a tire that was clearly within the bounds of the pit box. IMSA said that our tire was outside
15:42
the pit box when the Aston Martin hit it. I think we lost a place in that. They put some video evidence showing
15:48
where the tire was exactly, but that didn't overturn it. There's always something going on. We're kind of at the
15:53
mercy of the judges there. Prior to weekend's race in Canada, the number three Corvette was third in championship
15:59
standings, team standings, and manufacturer standings. Ahead of us are the Lexus, which is leading in class,
16:04
followed by the Mercedes AMG. And then prior to the WC race in Monza, the number 33 Corvette was leading by 74
16:11
points in its class, and it could actually wrap up the championship in the race. Again, we'll be watching on Sunday, find out exactly how well it
16:16
does. That car does have to carry an additional 40 kg of success ballast for winning at lemon. So, it won't be an
16:23
easy race, but it'll be one that we're watching Sunday morning. You got Motor Trend you can watch. I think the race is from like 6:00 to 12 or something like
16:30
that. Sounds good. Also, we found out that Prattton Miller Motorsports are set to debut next year.
16:35
Yeah, this was um an interesting, you know, where all the stories were Corvette Racing is going away. Corvette Racing is going away. So, it was
16:41
confirmed that Prattton Miller will be running two Corvette Z06 GT3R race cars in the IMSA's GTD Pro class next year.
16:49
Despite all that talk about Corvette Racing going away, it's just a continuation of the name. The actual name now is called Corvette Racing by
16:56
Pratt Miller Motorsports. We follow a lot of racing, not just IMSA, but all the different series. You know, we hear
17:01
teams like Penske and Ganassie. And we think one of the reasons why this change was done was really shine some light on
17:06
Pratt Miller Motorsports, who has been in this program for over 25 years with their partner being General Motors. I
17:12
think they're looking for just a little bit more of the spotlight on them. Of course, Pratt Miller also does some other things as well, so it would make
17:17
sense that they'd want to branch out their name a little bit more. We are expecting some additional teams to be announced, especially for the GTD
17:24
amateur class, and we're expecting two cars to be in the MCA class there as well. Well, we also found out that TF Sport is
17:31
going to have two GT3RS in the WEC next year. Yeah, they're going to drop the Aston
17:36
Martins. They've been racing Aston Martin since 2014, but they are going to make the switch to two Corvette GT3RS in
17:42
the LMG GT3 class next year. One of the things we think that might have helped that was Ben Keading was a driver over
17:48
there before we got him, right? And of course, TF Sport, they won lemons in 2020 and then they took the GTE
17:54
amateur class in 2022 last year and Ben Keading was their driver. So, this is really a great get for the Corvette
18:00
team. These guys are professionals and know exactly what they're doing. They've got a record of winning. We're glad to have Corvette associated with him.
18:06
That's really cool. And it was good to see Doug Feehan talking about Corvette racing. He really was talking about Lama
18:12
and the never give up attitude they had. Exactly. You know, anytime you can hear from the doctor is always a good day.
18:17
And I really do miss this guy a lot. I mean, he was just such the backbone of the team. And look at some of the team
18:22
members today. We never really quite hear from him the way we heard from Doug. Doug actually appeared when he made these comments. He was on that
18:28
Pratt Miller Motorsports alternative broadcast during Lemons. We were already two laps down. He was talking about how
18:33
hard it is to make up those laps because of how long the track is and then how they do the safety cars. He told the
18:38
story about in 2018 where the leading car, a Porsche in class, got separated from the rest of us when the safety cars
18:44
deployed. And that was like in the fourth hour of the race and then that Porsche enjoyed a 2 to three minute gap
18:50
where they led for the rest of the race. No one could catch up to him after that. They put in some new rules in place for
18:56
the safety cars with like waveounds and things like that to try to keep the groups together. Again, a little more
19:01
controversy because Corvette Racing should have gotten the first wave around with that new rule, but they didn't. So, clear a little bit more work to do
19:07
there. But Fee Han will tell you racing is 25% having a great car, 25% having a great team, and 50% good luck. That
19:14
never give up motto has been with the team since day one. And they showed it again. He says you never give up because
19:20
you never know what's going to happen. Sure enough, team kept hammering down, kept getting that time back and pretty
19:25
soon took the lead and then left everybody in the dust. So, anything can happen and you never give up. We like listening to Doug because he just has
19:31
such a great way of saying it. Love me some Doug Fan. That's for sure. Keith, in the rumors category, we found
19:37
out or we're hearing that the 2025 ZR1 might have active fuel management.
19:43
Yeah, you know, this is a rumor brought to us by GM Authority, a big site. I don't know exactly how well I think
19:48
about their track record in opinion on these things, but they are saying exclusive 2025 Corvette ZR1 will have
19:54
active fuel management. We're thinking that the ZR1 will have the same engine as the Z06 only with the twin turbos,
20:00
right? The Z06 doesn't use active fuel management. They're talking about the ZR1 having it. So, that's where there's
20:06
the the controversy there. Active fuel management, also known as cylinder deactivation, as it shuts down half the
20:11
engine cylinders during light driving, like when you're cruising on the highway, you're adding a lot more horsepower, maybe 850 or so, then you're
20:18
going to reduce power. So, what's the point, right? Yeah. They say that the Z06 is the track weapon. you wouldn't want that on your
20:25
track weapon where the ZR1 might be more of that track weapon for the street kind of thing, you know. So, it could happen,
20:30
but we're not putting a lot into it right now. It's just one of these wait and see rumors, I think. Yeah, it'll be interesting to see how
20:36
the ZR1 pans out. That's for sure. Also, I think we saw maybe the first right-hand drive Z06 in New Zealand.
20:42
Steve, you know how I like talking about Corvettes World Domination Tour. Oh, yeah. And we just got the news that the new Z06 has landed in New Zealand. One
20:50
of them has at least. It was shown off to some of the automotive media there. Currently, there's no pricing for when
20:55
the Z06 will go on sale in the country. One of the sites suggests that if pricing is similar to the spread between
21:00
the Z06 and the Stingray here in the States, then theoretically, if the Stingray over there costs $185,000, then
21:06
the Z06 could see a starting price upwards of $260,000. That's a big get over there. As far as
21:12
the exact timeline on when it will be available, we're told next year for a 2024 model. Again, we always like to
21:18
talk about the quantities of these exports. New Zealand got 30 Stingrays. They got 28 for customers and they had

21:42
our final break, Keith. When we come back, it's the lighter side of Corvette up next on Corvette Today.

Hey honey, are you awake? M I am now. I can't sleep. Since turning 50, I keep
23:28
dreaming of a red door and a blue door. Somehow knowing there are only choices for retirement. Okay.
23:34
Through the red door, we outlive our money. We have to rely on our kids. We're stuck on a fixed income. It's
23:39
terrifying. Yeah, that would suck. But through the blue door, our money outlives us. We retire on our terms. Our
23:46
kids stay our kids, not our caretakers. We make work optional. Yes, that's much better. That's what I
23:53
want, too. But what do we do? We call True Wealth and Company at 913-6538783.
23:59
They specialize in helping successful people make work optional. They're our fiduciary blue door personal wealth
24:04
managers. Hey, where are you going? It's 3:00 a.m. I can't sleep. I'm going to check out

True Wealth and Company online at retirewithtr.com. That blue door is going to be our retirement.

25:32
my buddy Keith Cornet, my partner in crime every other week to bring you the latest news and headlines in the world
25:38
of Corvette. If you want a deeper dive into any of these stories that we cover, you can always go to corvette
25:43
blogger.com. Keith, in this final segment, we always do the lighter side of Corvette. We actually had a
25:48
behindthescenes -ay official photo shoot which is really cool. Yeah. You know, you see these official
25:54
photos that come out. You know, the team will put out like 30 photos or so and different couple scenes, different couple cars usually. The Instagram
26:00
account from GM Design shared these behind the scenes photos of what goes on. There's actually a couple videos as
26:06
well. We had that silver car with the blue stripe that was on the curvy, you know, two road back road kind of place
26:11
in the forest. And then we had the shot at night where it was in the city on a bridge. So, really neat stuff. You know,
26:16
they bring in like the water trucks wet down the roads, make them nice and dark. They used the smoke machines on the
26:22
forest road to add a little bit of ambiance to it. You know, it's some cool stuff. And then of course the drones flying overhead. If you follow this kind
26:28
of stuff and you like those pictures and I wonder how they did that, you know, it's really cool to see. And my always question is where did they do that?
26:34
Because they always find these spectacular locations. Have no idea where the forest road was. Someone told me that that bridge is in Columbus,
26:40
Ohio, but I've not confirmed that. Again, just neat stuff there. When they launched the Z06, obviously they were all over the
26:46
Pittsburgh area and that kind of location. It's neat how, you know, the different launch teams are picking different areas to film their cars and
26:52
create that exclusive photography for the launch. Well, they can always come to Tampa or Kansas City, right, Keith?
26:57
I'd be willing to camp out. Offer a little security, maybe. Absolutely. You and me both, buddy.
27:03
Hey, and everybody loves a 63 split window Corvette. Well, we have the world's only 65 split window Corvette,
27:10
and it was sold on eBay. Yeah, you know, we we ran the story and I had some comments. People did not like this, you
27:15
know, and I'm like, wait a second, you know, this is just like what people do. It's like putting a 67 big block hood on
27:20
a 63 maybe or 64. In this case, you know, the story goes that a guy didn't want to pay the premium for a 63 split
27:27
window, so he built one out of a 65 coupe. That car sold for 528 on eBay,
27:32
which is a pretty good price. The car did need a little bit of work. It was in driver quality, but it ran and drive. So
27:37
for 52,000 for a running midyear that can run and drive, that's pretty good. Now the next owner can decide whether to
27:42
keep it or take out that split was just a piece of fiberglass that covered the middle of that one piece window that was
27:48
already there. So if somebody did want to get rid of it, I think it'd be pretty easy. Wow. It's pretty cool looking though. I
27:53
liked it. It is. It's a conversation starter. Absolutely right. Also, if you're a C7 person, a C7 ZR1 ran 207 mph on the
28:03
shuttle speedway. That was awesome. You know, we talk about the C8s quite often. It's the newest car, but the 2019
28:09
Corvette ZR1 still holds the title as the most powerful Corvette ever. 6.2 LT5
28:14
pushing 755 horsepower. The car at the space shuttle landing strip was a lowwing car instead of the ZTK with the
28:20
high wings. So, built for that less drag. And when they let that off the chain at the nearly 3 mile long space
28:26
shuttle landing strip at Kennedy Space Center, it's also known as the Johnny Bonner Proving Grounds. And during that run, the car achieved a top speed of 207
28:33
mph. We were told there's a little bit of a headwind which kept the car from going even faster, but man, it's really
28:38
neat. And you watch that car, you see the instrumentation from inside. It's just jumping, you know? I mean, it gets
28:44
to 160 so fast. It's just incredible. I would love to be able to drive a fast car like that on a 3mile landing strip
28:50
just to see what it could do. Always good to see the Corvette ZR1's out there. And of course, they're still near and dear to our hearts.
28:55
Absolutely. I'm still kicking myself for not getting a C7 ZR1. Also, LEGO is celebrating Corvette's 70th anniversary.
29:02
They made a 61 C1 model Corvette which is really good looking. It is. They really did a good job. Now
29:08
this isn't for the grandkids probably unless they're actively building these kind of things. They call this for
29:13
skilled adult builders like you and me. Yeah. It does have 1,200 pieces and once completed the red Corvette is 12 1/2 in
29:20
long and 5 1/2 in wide. It's a really good looking model and might be something to do for Christmas or the
29:25
holidays. That's for the kid and all of us, my friend. That's right. There you go. And finally, Keith, let's do a quick preview and a
29:31
deadline update on Corvettes of Carile coming up at the end of August. Yeah. So, Corvettes of Carile runs
29:37
August 24th, 25th, and 26th. If you're listening to this podcast on Monday, today is the deadline to get your Carile
29:43
registration in to save 10% on the funfield parking and also to have everything mailed to you so you can just
29:49
drive right into the fairgrounds when you get there as opposed to having to wait in lines to get your sticker and then come in. So, Monday, you're
29:55
listening to this, you know, you're wanting to go to Carile, go ahead and jump on that. We want to see you there. The other thing, too, is our friends at
30:00
Carile, this year is the 50th anniversary of the 1973 Corvette. And they're actually still looking for a
30:06
number of 1973s to be part of their anniversary exhibit there. So, if you want to get some free entry into the
30:12
park and some of the other perks that are available if your car selected, we have a contact on the website at corvetteblogger.com where you can submit
30:18
your car and if it's accepted, you're going to be at Carile free of charge. So, that's pretty cool, too. Free is a great price, my friend.
30:25
Yeah. And Carla, of course, you're going to see my boy Steve there doing his seminars on the podcast. And of course, we'll be roaming the grounds looking for
30:31
all the great cars and stories that come. So, we definitely want to see you there. Absolutely, Keith and I will be there. We want to see you, too. Well, buddy,
30:37
thanks for being back on Corvette Today. I will see you in two weeks. Sounds great, Steve. Happy to be here. If you see you out there, throw up those
