2:40
today he's here twice per month every other week and we keep you up to date on what's going on in the world of corvette
2:45
keith before we start i want to dedicate today's show to harvey gluck harvey was a member of corvetteforum.com
2:52
and also mid-engine corvette forum.com harvey recently passed away due to complications with pancreatic
2:59
cancer harvey owned almost 90 corvettes in his lifetime and our sincerest thoughts and prayers go out to
3:05
harvey's family he will truly be missed in our corvette community yeah i actually had the opportunity to meet
3:10
harvey a couple times at the corvette museum what a neat guy to talk to he always had something fun to say about the corvette
3:16
team and i think the corvette team really adored him as well he was one of these guys that every year would buy a new corvette
3:22
yes that's how you end up with 90 corvettes over your lifetime and in some years i think he was buying
3:27
two he'd buy one drive it for six eight ten months sell it buy another one just whatever struck his fancy that was
3:34
his car and that's what he wanted to drive he's gonna be missed he's just one of those hardcore guys that has obviously been around forever
3:40
just a neat person to talk to he loved the corvette we're gonna miss harvey he was a true core effect connoisseur
3:45
keith that's for sure yes he was well let's get into the news give us a production update at the bowling green
3:51
assembly plant sure well the plant was closed last week so we are standing at 13
3:57
690 corvettes have been built for the 2021 model year up until the plant closure things were
4:03
really going well they were cranking out about 180 182 per day of course that translates to around 900 per week
4:09
boy when that plant goes down for a week obviously there's a lot of consternation going on there right it's been nine weeks that we were
4:16
open since the last plant closure was the week of march first if we can continue to get parts and we can continue to operate safely
4:22
the plant does have the ability to crank out a number of cars each week again just the supply chain issues are
4:27
what caused the plant to close obviously the rumor that's been going around about the plant closure it wasn't chips and we confirmed that
4:33
with the corvette concierge it was actually what we are hearing is something with the dual clutch transmissions oh that's what caused the
4:40
plant closures last time in march as well again we're just keeping an eye on supply we'll see how things go
4:46
the manufacturers like chevrolet and general motors they all have dedicated teams working to work with
4:51
these tier one suppliers what do you need what can we help you with we know that they've flown parts as opposed to shipping parts by truck
4:58
so whatever they can do to get the parts to the plant they're going to do it so if there's a shutdown you know it is
5:04
something that was a major disruption and that's why they're not working this week it was a big deal and we also found out
5:09
the 2021 production will now run through august that's what they told the dealer so they do a dealer memo
5:15
and they put it out there i don't want to say it's set in stone at all but the final week the final tpw's will
5:20
be august 9th so they'll roll through there and you know what if they go in there and we can go through
5:25
another unerrupted period they have the ability to build over 25 000 cars for the 21 model year
5:31
wow obviously you gotta have the parks in to do it but if we're sitting at 13 690 right now we can double that if we
5:38
just have the parts right let's hope they can get that we'll see if they do actually go into august conti was saying that he heard that it
5:45
actually might fall into september oh sometimes they did a traditional labor day break sometimes it's over fourth of july
5:51
but labor day this year is on september 6th so a little bit later into september than normal so there's some
5:56
things there that might happen so it's still up in the air but we are hearing the week of august 9th is when
6:01
they'll wrap up the 20 months and we'll keep everybody posted and updated if we get any new information and updated stuff for the
6:08
2021 model year absolutely and you know in that week of the 20 that we say august 9th that comes from chevrolet that was a
6:14
dealer communication when we hear that stuff we put that on our calendar because that's what chevy's telling dealers that's what
6:20
we're following right and also corvette was the fastest selling car again and this time in april of 2021.
6:27
so four consecutive months this is the ic cars they do a study and shows how long it takes for the car
6:33
to be delivered to its new customer we've seen for the last four months chevrolet and the corvette
6:39
have been right around that 9.2 9.4 gays in april it was 9.2 days to sell and i
6:46
think that moved up just a little bit the weather's getting better with the better weather you know they're gonna move faster they're getting cars in cars are shipping
6:52
it's really moving so the other interesting thing with this study is that the average price also jumped so it
6:58
was 82 400 in march and now the average price tag has jumped to 87
7:05
390. wow again that is just a fantastic number for chevrolet they gotta
7:10
love that but boy you know when you take 900 cars away at an average price of 87 000 during a
7:16
week of stoppage you see why they're doing everything they can to keep that plant going but these cars are moving fast and
7:21
i don't see this study changing anytime soon within the next few months corvettes are sold out as long as the
7:27
production's there they're moving and they can get them out to the dealers as fast as they're built we're gonna see times that are under 10
7:33
days so that's really good that is really good as a matter of fact i know my local hendrick chevrolet dealership here in kansas city
7:40
has almost a two year waiting list so it's understandable that this is a hot car and it's selling so well
7:46
also c8 makes its debut in australia and in europe and in australia it was during
7:51
the final roar tribute at the bend tell us about that yeah so they've had a car out there
7:57
i want to say going back at least a year but this is a left-hand drive car it's not one of the new right-hand drive cars
8:02
oh they had a celebration out there sort of a tribute to all the holden cars holden was the manufacturer in australia that
8:09
has now gone away they've got this torch red stingray out there it was driven on this track by craig rounds who is a seven time winner
8:16
of the bathhurst 1000. wow he's very well known racer in australia so he did a few laps in the
8:22
car and just came out he's got a video where he's just grinning from ear to ear when he's driving it but he gets out of the car and just
8:28
talks about what he likes about it the different feel between the front engine car and now with the mid engine
8:34
so australians really have something fantastic to look forward to later this year when the 2022s do arrive
8:40
down there very nice and consumer reports gives their first impression of the new 2021 ca corvette as well yeah
8:47
consumer reports they buy their cars so they go out that way they don't have any manufacturer interference or they
8:52
don't feel obligated so they bought a corvette so now it's just rotating around some of their different auto reviewers
8:59
they've got three guys that all had a chance just to basically drive and spend maybe a weekend with it they gave their first impressions
9:05
overall it's a very positive review of the car of course when they did the first drive back in 2019 and late 2019 after the car
9:11
had been revealed and chevrolet had brought in the magazines and consumer reports to do some first drives
9:16
they flipped out over the car they really liked it so historically i always say that consumer reports
9:22
hasn't really enjoyed the corvette as much as we have but the c7s they really seem to kind of turn around and now at the c8 i think
9:28
they're really going to enjoy this car so they're going to be doing a whole slew of testing they're going to do track testing long-term drives and all that
9:34
so it's going to be a fun year out of consumer reports to see what they write about the chevrolet corvette wow that's really cool i didn't know
9:40
that they got that extensive but i'm interested to see what they come up with that's pretty cool well keith let's take our first break
9:45

this is the corvette today podcast with steve garrett hey thanks for listening to corvette
12:00
today the podcast that talks about everything corvette i'm your host steve garrett with me every other week is keith cornett
12:06
from corvetteblogger.com we keep you up to date on what's going on in the world corvette in segment number two that's our racing
12:13
and rumors segment and first with racing keith the national corvette museum announces an andy pilgrim driving experience which
12:20
will be very very cool yeah this would be exciting for anybody that wants to get tips from a corvette hall of fame race
12:25
car driver of course andy pilgrim was a member of the corvette racing team back in the early days
12:30
and then he went on him and johnny o'connell dominated some of the other series with the cadillac sounds like a fun day you go there you
12:37
have breakfast with him he designed his own autocross course out there so you do an autocross session
12:42
you come back in you break for lunch and then you head out onto the 3.2 mile road course he's going to give
12:48
you tips they said you're going to get at least an hour's worth of driving on there with him then also spending some of that time
12:54
beside you giving you tips and critiquing and offering those and then the day concludes with a nice dinner
12:59
over at the corvette museum where you know you get a really just kind of socialize with the other people that are in your group
13:04
along with andy so sounds like a really fun day i think they're charging about twelve hundred dollars for it so
13:09
a very nice hands-on experience for those that really want to learn to drive their corvettes a little bit more
13:15
aggressively and safely on the track and be able to get tips from a corvette hall of fame driver it's totally worth it in my book
13:21
absolutely all i can say keith is where do you sign me up well i think you'd go to the ncm
13:27
motorsports park there you go also in the racing section the c8 corvette convertible the hardtop
13:32
convertible is now the official pace car for the 105th indianapolis 500
13:38
that is very exciting this is really exciting again it's almost become we expect it to be
13:43
we've been blessed that it has been over the last couple years the corvette is the pace car this one looks really nice if you guys
13:49
haven't seen the photos yet they're all over we got them up on corvetteblogger.com it's an arctic white with black accents
13:55
a black nasals black roof and then the arrow on the car like the 5vm arrow on the sides and the little
14:01
front winglets those are done in yellow and they got some nice graphics on there and then it's also got the high wing
14:07
with some yellow tints on there as well but the really neat thing is some of the safety car features obviously this car
14:12
is out there to do duty as a safety car this is the first time they said since i think 2008 that a convertible
14:19
has paced the 500. so they built this series of safety lights the strobe
14:24
lights into the nasals of the car wow there's some video of the car going around and you can see
14:30
them flashing up so really nice there kind of reminds me you know they did a convertible i want to say 98 with the purple car yes that also had
14:38
the safety lights kind of built into the humps behind the driver and the passenger seat really cool to see chevy
14:44
they're guys saying we're gonna make this very visible for the indy car drivers behind us but yet it's all integrated you don't
14:51
see these mounted lights anywhere until you look closely behind it there's also five point harnesses that
14:56
were installed in the seats as well so the car is made to go but it's also made for show it's the 18th
15:01
time that corvette has paced it and i think it's the 32nd time overall that chevrolet has been doug bowles from the indianapolis motor
15:08
speedway will tell you 18 times for the corvette well did you know that roger penske has won 18 times in the
15:14
indianapolis 500 right so roger penske being the new owner of the track this will be the first year that the fans will be able to
15:20
be back there and so they're real excited about it obviously we're excited anytime we can see the corvette pacing the greatest
15:25
spectacle in racing so should be a fun weekend i think that raise happens on sunday may 31st it does it's memorial day
15:33
weekend i'm looking forward to seeing the drop top down and all those lights flashing that'll be really really cool
15:38
in our rumors section keith the z06 prototype was practicing launch control talk about
15:44
that where was that done we believe this was done up at milford on the milford proving ground tracks okay and really if you see the video
15:51
this guy is creeping i want to see his army crawling through the woods to get to a position where he
15:56
can capture the car this is launch control being practiced you hear the flutter you press the brake down as hard as you can once it's
16:02
engaged the rpms go up you hear it fluttering and then boom the car is gone boy that really makes a nice soundtrack
16:09
it was done over and over again one of the interesting things is that later on we did another video because a
16:14
guy who calls himself a math nerd but he's like if you look at the track where that car was doing those controlled launch
16:20
control launches there's some measurements over there and so he used some calculus and
16:25
physics came up with the formula he believes that this car will do a 2.5 2.6
16:31
0 to 60 mile per hour sprint of course that's very fast to be the quickest corvette ever so people are really excited of
16:37
course the stingray came out you know they offered a two point i want to say it was a 2.9 or by the 3.0
16:43
0 to 60 launch and people are doing 2.8 2.6s so will we see that kind of improvement as well from the everyday
16:49
driver in the z06 very exciting anytime we get launches like that and we can really hear the sound of what we think
16:56
is the flat plane crank v8 in there just again very exciting absolutely also there were three
17:02
c8 prototypes that responded in colorado obviously in the high altitude now this was different than the ones we thought
17:08
were the z06 and the zr1 isn't that correct this one was kind of hard to tell we think it's probably a mixed group it
17:15
could be like we saw in marietta ohio a couple weeks back where they had what we think
17:21
is the zr1 and the z06 the zr1 differentiated by the center mount exhaust we just really
17:27
don't know what the cars are but in our own minds that's how we have to differentiate it the cars sound a little bit different
17:32
and then we obviously we talked about this last time we got together as what cars are they benchmarking against
17:37
and from that we know here we just see three prototypes they're lined up on an overpass turnout area
17:43
they're very high up in the mountains in fact the mountains are covered in snow but it's kind of dark and so we can't really see the exhaust we just know that
17:49
they're working out there there was another sighting a couple days later that also showed two prototypes with a
17:55
c8 stingray together they are definitely working and the more sightings we have is always the
18:00
indication that they're getting closer and closer to being able to reveal some information or reveal the
18:05
car so again just very exciting anytime we see these guys working it's good news for corvette fans i know i can't wait for
18:11
the z06 and the zr1 and the e-ray to come out i just kind of hang on every single release because
18:17
like you said i think we're getting closer and closer hopefully sooner than later we'll have a z06
18:22
we use these sightings we connect the dots we try to find out new information there's always knowledgeable people
18:28
that'll comment and give us some ideas if you see these videos and you see something say if you see something say
18:33
something because everybody is very excited about this car and the more we can learn about it in advance just makes the process a lot more fun
18:40
and finally in the rumors section did we see the new z06 logo keith it's an interesting logo this is one
18:46
that we haven't posted on corvette blogger it's been on the forums it's very i call it a very stylized the
18:52
z that's created it looks kind of like somebody took the side scoop from the c8 corvette and took two of
18:59
them and kind of put them together to create the z figure we don't know the real source of it it's watermarked by a site called all
19:06
car news they've got a instagram and a youtube channel but they have no information on that we couldn't find any z06 info
19:13
anywhere on their channels so we don't know where this comes from i don't know who did it do i think that this is the z06 logo
19:19
i am not sold on it at all there was a release back in 2019 that showed some z06 steering wheels being tested
19:26
those had the regular z06 logo much like the one we saw on the sides of the c7 z06
19:31
right also the z button on the stingrays the z kind of looked like that on those steering wheels so
19:37
this is very stylized it's kind of almost even a little bit hard to grasp that it's a z at first i just
19:43
don't see chevy designers doing something like that at this point but i could be wrong but again i'm not feeling it well we'll hopefully
19:49
have a new z06 and a new z06 logo very very soon and we've seen chevy do that like when they came out with the
19:56
stingray they did release the cross flags logo we did see the stingray logos they showed us the steering wheel so
20:02
there were certain releases leading up to the release of the actual release of the car that they could do and one of those
20:07
would be a z06 logo there you go well keith let's take our final break and in segment number three
20:13
we'll talk about the lighter side of corvette on corvette today vetfinders.com is the

22:02
and now back to corvette today with your host and my husband steve garrett hey thanks
22:09
for listening to corvette today the podcast that talks about everything corvette i'm your host steve garrett
22:14
with me every other week is keith cornett from corvetteblogger.com we keep you up to date on what's going
22:20
on in the world of corvette in segment number three we're going to talk about the lighter side of corvette some etc things as a matter of fact the
22:26
national corvette museum has selected lumar as its preferred paint protection film
22:32
that's not easy for me to say it for some reason keith but it's an awful but yeah so i want to call
22:38
this basically a sponsorship or an endorsement yes they are actually not doing a product install so if you were to get an
22:45
rhc you couldn't have the lumar put on your car what we've heard is that in september they will be doing
22:51
some product displays and demonstrations during the anniversary show that happens around labor day
22:56
weekend okay this again is paint protection is something that new corvette owners take seriously
23:02
and we know that there's all kinds of different brands out there umar is part of the eastman suntech brands different than expel and the 3ms
23:09
and some of the others they all have their pluses and minuses i've heard some very good things about lumar and suntec
23:15
especially some of their self-healing properties so if you get a little nick or something in there how it tries to heal itself
23:20
yes this stuff you can put down to protect your paint and then you can even put coverings over like ceramic coatings
23:26
and things like that as well so sounds like an interesting partnership i think it'll really take hold if they're able to do
23:32
some installs there at the museum but for right now it's just mostly informational that sounds good also borla shows a new
23:39
s-type and attack exhaust for the c8 corvette we've been watching the development this closely david
23:45
borla's been doing videos over the course of the last year talking about some of the engineering challenges that they've taken on and if
23:51
you look at their system it is a really nice well-presented system again it sounds great they've got the two levels
23:58
the s-type and the attack so depending on what you're looking for out of the sound of your car they've got a system set up for you it's
24:05
all compliant with epa there's no drone i gotta say that you know i usually don't dip my toes and telling people
24:10
what i think about how good an exhaust sounds compared to others but i think this is one of the best sounding c8 corvettes exhaust that's out
24:17
there so very neat to see it again they got the round tips it seems like all the aftermarket companies are
24:22
differentiating themselves from the stock npp exhaust by doing the round tips versus the squared off tips that we see on the
24:29
stock exhaust so again a very nice looking very nice sounding exhaust system from borla i'll have to
24:34
check that out for sure also chip foose customized a 62 corvette with a mid-year dash
24:40
this was really interesting so they've been working on this car for at least a year now and we caught one of
24:45
the early episodes of it and we thought wow you know he's just in there you know he's standing and grinding and cutting
24:50
things up the way chip foose does in the episode earlier he was talking with the owner was looking at the car
24:56
and the owner didn't like the 60s style dash wanted to really kind of condense it down like the 63
25:02
67 dash where you have all the gauges tightly packed together in front of the driver as opposed to
25:08
spread out along the dash that the c1's had as he's sitting there talking to foose he's like yeah you probably couldn't do a 63
25:14
dashing there could you swoosh just looks at him and says yeah if that's what you want he does this work that shows him up
25:19
there cutting the stuff they have to fit it correctly and there's all sorts of challenges there you watch these reality shows of them
25:25
working on garages and stuff there's always all this drama and everything there's none of that in this this is just guys working on cars and figuring
25:32
out how to overcome certain challenges to customize it the way the owner wants a neat series with a cool car chip fuse
25:38
is one of the best at what he does we really enjoy it i hope you people that like chip foose will tune in to see that one
25:43
absolutely also a couple donated their third corvette to the national corvette museum
25:48
and this one honors dale earnhardt yeah this was bought at an earnhardt dealership back in the day this is uh from jack and dor de long and
25:56
they've actually donated three cars now to the museum i think the other two were c4s this car the beautiful it's
26:02
nassau blue silver wheels just looks really nice they had a nice under the hood display put up it shows some tribute to
26:08
dale earnhardt as well as the generosity of members of the corvette museum never ceases to amaze me and for many
26:14
people they realize that these cars especially like the c4 c5 they're not worth all that much in terms
26:19
of the grand scheme of things on the secondary market if they donate it to the museum obviously they get a tax deduction there
26:25
but they are really furthering the history of the museum and being able to tell these unique stories
26:30
just well done by these guys i'm sure we're all going to be able to enjoy this car at some point very cool also the sledgehammer callaway
26:37
corvette the one that went 230 miles per hour is offered on bring a
26:42
trailer unbelievable let's get it right steve it went 254 miles an hour oh my gosh i
26:48
stand currently 254.7 i lost it myself 2.4 and you know what
26:54
it's the sledgehammer it was one of the top 50 bloomington gold cars when they did their hall of fame wall for the cars
27:00
right in 88 i was in college totally immersed and not knowing what's going on i knew about the sledgehammer just a fun
27:06
car the video from back in the day where they show it running of the automotive transport research
27:12
circle they drove it from connecticut to ohio with air conditioning on they drove in the rain they get out there they run 255
27:19
miles an hour and then they drive it home incredible and that was in 1988 that was 30 years ago
27:24
just a fantastic car i think it was priced we saw the bids up on it to four and a quarter 425 000.
27:30
if it reaches seven figures i wouldn't be surprised absolutely right also there's a youtuber named four-wheel
27:36
trader that offered a really cool market analysis and depreciation update for the c8 corvette
27:42
yeah you know i think our readers really like this story because this is a data driven article and he did a video where he's charting
27:48
these pre-owned prices and corvettes and then from there he also has it broken down by trim so
27:54
1lt 2lt 3lt and so he went and got like 800 prices and then charted them all from
28:01
there you know you throw out the highs and the lows and you have your mediums and then he also looks at multiple time
28:06
periods so he looked at i think last june last november and now may
28:11
from there he can see that yeah you can see how sales just were skyrocketing prices were way up there
28:17
but it's starting to level off just a little bit i mean obviously prices are still high for pre-owned cars but he's seeing a little bit of level
28:23
off depending on the next six months or so we could see maybe the prices start to come down a little bit to normal i think
28:30
we might see some more of that when the z06 is announced as people are selling c8 stingrays to
28:35
move into the z06 yeah there is going to be some market disruption coming up hopefully that will help bring down some of these
28:41
used car prices but in the meantime essentially what he found it even cars with higher
28:46
miles like 10 000 miles you can buy a stingray you can drive it for a few thousand miles and you can sell it and you'll get more
28:53
for it than what you paid for it and so that's basically like driving this new stingray for free that's amazing so again the used car
29:01
prices are just crazy too just because of the current market the situation right dealerships sometimes
29:06
only have like 30 or 40 percent of their normal inventories right now of all cars not just corvettes just because of the shortages and
29:12
covid and all that stuff so the market's already kind of messed up anyways and then you throw a high demand low supply model like the corvette into
29:19
the mix and that's why we're seeing the best selling car four months straight and then price is just through the roof it's just going to take some time before
29:25
it all evens out very true and finally keith the philadelphia concourse to elegance is going to be
29:31
celebrating corvette america's sports car which is really really cool yeah this is a good event it's a fairly new event i think it's
29:37
only their fourth one that they've done they didn't have it last year because of covet but this is held at the simeon auto
29:42
museum in philadelphia and that of course is the home of the chassis number two corvette grand sport the 63 roadster
29:49
that was driven by george winterstein oh so they've got that car there they've got some other corvettes as well
29:54
they're going to do this nice tribute to the corvette as their featured mark it should be a nice celebration i always
30:00
feel like when these organizations say well we're going to celebrate the corvette this year it's just a way for them to bring in
30:05
more people because when corvette fans hear about that stuff they show up in mass to these kinds of things it should be a good event a lot
30:12
of corvettes around the philadelphia new jersey new york area so should bring in a lot of people that'll be a lot of fun
