3:20
celebrated 50 years of lingan felter
3:23
performance engineering Ken welcome back
3:25
to Corvette today buddy I'm so glad to
3:27
be here talking to you Steve thanks for
3:29
taking the time first Ken 2023 marked
3:32
the 50th anniversary of lingan felter
3:35
performance engineering what a huge
3:37
Monumental feat congratulations my
3:39
friend Boy Thanks so much I got to tell
3:42
you we're still working as hard and
3:43
having a blast with what we do you can
3:45
probably imagine all those yours working
3:47
on General Motors products mostly
3:49
Corvette we have a lot of fun over here
3:51
and we get to do a lot of really great
3:53
things and it absolutely shows buddy
3:55
your lineup of things that are for
3:56
Corvette is just simply amazing as a
3:59
matter of fact we're going to talk about
4:00
that in the second segment of this show
4:02
for Corvette today Ken talk about your
4:04
dad your dad was a GM executive wasn't
4:06
he yeah actually my dad worked in
4:09
management at a factory in uid Ohio
4:11
early on they built the Nomad wagons and
4:14
so on and so forth towards the end of
4:16
his stay at that facility they were
4:17
building the ult tornado Fisher body was
4:20
still being kept a little bit separate
4:22
from the rest of GM they always wanted
4:25
to make that fisher body something
4:27
special but over that time he got an
4:29
opportunity to get involved in a lot of
4:31
really great cars not only the Toronado
4:33
but the Cadillac alante and really ended
4:36
his career working in quality control
4:38
for Cadillac that's cool what iconic
4:41
cars too the tornado and the Cadillac oh
4:44
my gosh that's awesome now you and I
4:45
have been friends for a while now you
4:47
purchased your first Corvette back in
4:49
1977 talk about the memories of that
4:52
first Corvette purchase for you well as
4:54
time went on and everything else I was
4:56
really really focused on Corvette I mean
4:58
I'm a Corvette guy right right to the
4:59
core that 1977 it was a car that was
5:03
bought by a GM employee he had to keep
5:05
it for 6 months and at the end of the 6
5:07
months he knew how much I wanted it and
5:09
so we made an arrangement for me to
5:11
purchase that car just as soon as he was
5:13
done with it and I just drove the
5:14
Daylights out of it as you know we're up
5:16
in Michigan here and Corvettes are not
5:18
necessarily c3s especially the best cars
5:21
in the winter but I drove that car right
5:23
through the winter as well that's
5:25
fantastic what a great story do you have
5:27
a favorite Corvette or a generation of
5:29
Corvette Ken yeah I like to tell people
5:31
a little bit you know because of my
5:33
dad's position with General Motors when
5:35
I was about 10 years old he took me to
5:37
an open house at the tech center they
5:40
had the 63 split window Corvette there
5:42
now mind you I was 10 years old so I was
5:45
already a car guy I think I owned every
5:46
Matchbox car that had ever been made
5:49
really really focused in a lot of the
5:51
upcoming cars that car just took the
5:54
legs right out from underneath me I got
5:56
to tell you Steve I can still remember
5:58
the day looking through the back window
5:59
of that car and thinking to myself how
6:02
cool is this and I have to also say I
6:05
think I became a Corvette guy for life
6:06
at that time you and me both buddy the
6:08
63 split window got me into Corvettes
6:11
for sure such a gorgeous car well and
6:13
then they did the thing later on with
6:14
the Corvettes the astronauts and things
6:16
of that nature so that's what got me
6:19
yeah from 10 years old on here I said
6:21
I'm still as dedicated and focused on
6:23
Corvette as you can possibly imagine
6:25
absolutely buddy you are a Corvette
6:27
Enthusiast a million perc that's for
6:29
sure buddy what do you consider the most
6:31
valuable Corvettes that you've got in
6:33
your collection right now you know the
6:35
collection's pretty eclectic you know
6:37
there are lots of really unique cars
6:39
there many Corvettes that I kind of
6:40
found along the way I always liked the
6:43
Oddball stuff you know there's a
6:44
Greenwood Sport Wagon in there there's
6:46
another Greenwood turbo you know these
6:49
cars had a lot of different body
6:51
characteristics John Greenwood was quite
6:53
a character and a racer but also had a
6:55
flare for taking the car to some new
6:58
levels so people come and visit the
7:00
collection and see those cars sometimes
7:01
look at me like I might need psychiatric
7:03
help or something cuz they're a little
7:05
wildl looking but that's part of the fun
7:07
for me yeah and there's a Shota body car
7:10
in here a lot of lingenfelder cars five
7:12
of this one two of that one six of this
7:15
one so there's a lot of unique cars but
7:17
a lot of just great looking Corvettes I
7:19
think there are 55 Corvettes in the
7:21
center room of the car collection right
7:23
now it goes from one end to the other
7:25
from C4 all the way up to C8 that's
7:28
amazing 55 Corvettes I've got to come up
7:30
and see that buddy I really do you're
7:32
welcome anytime buddy thank you now I
7:34
know lingan felter performance
7:35
engineering has high performance parts
7:37
and accessories for most GM products
7:40
talk to me about the GM cars and trucks
7:42
that LP has performance parts for well
7:45
you know we like to talk to our customer
7:47
when they come to us and ask them what
7:48
they're thinking about doing are they
7:50
looking to race are they going to
7:52
autocross are they going to Road Race do
7:53
they just want to go to car shows and
7:55
pop the hood and beat on their chest
7:57
everybody's got their own idea about
7:58
what they want to do with our Corvette
8:00
and so it starts there same thing goes
8:02
with the SUV work we do or Camaros that
8:06
we've always done really kind of depends
8:08
on what the customer wants and we've got
8:10
packages for horsepower and handling and
8:13
things of that nature to kind of cover
8:15
the gambut I think the customers when
8:17
they come in and they look at what is
8:19
available they sometimes change their
8:21
mind and say well I might like to do
8:23
this and I might like to do that and
8:24
we're there to help them out yeah it's
8:26
amazing the bread of performance product
8:29
that you've got for not just Corvette
8:31
but for all GM products it's really cool
8:33
yep we have a lot of fun doing it and
8:35
it's all on lingenfelder decom if
8:37
anybody wants to take a look at that
8:38
website and think about what they might
8:40
want to do that's the place to start
8:42
absolutely well buddy let's take our
8:44
first break when we come back we're
8:45
going to talk about the performance

11:45
docomo Steve Garrett with me is Ken
11:47
lingan felter from lingan felter
11:49
performance engineering they just
11:51
celebrated last year 50 years in
11:53
business as a matter of fact in this
11:55
segment we're going to talk about the
11:56
offerings that Ling and felter
11:58
performance engineering has for Corvette
12:00
Ken Corvette enthusiasts can choose from
12:02
installed packages or select Performance
12:05
Products all a cart can't they you know
12:07
they can and there's quite a variety
12:09
depending on what our customer wants to
12:10
do whether they want a race road race
12:12
autocross whatever there's a package
12:15
that will fit in most cases for
12:17
something they're looking for we've
12:18
always been pretty proud of the fact
12:20
that we've done C4 right up to C8 but
12:23
we've had to stop working on C4s from
12:25
the standpoint that we just can't seem
12:26
to get parts anymore oh yeah that's
12:29
pretty tough so C5 forward we've got a
12:31
package for every one of them it's
12:33
amazing how many people get their first
12:35
Corvette and they start out with a C5
12:37
which by the way is a really good car
12:39
yeah and they end up well geez let's try
12:41
a C6 now let's try a C7 and I have to
12:44
tell you and I know you know this to be
12:46
true the new C8 Corvette Steve is just
12:49
such a great car such a great car just
12:52
right out of the factory and we don't
12:54
have to do anything to it yeah they're
12:56
so good and as a result we've got a good
12:58
prod product to start with and we've had
13:00
a lot of fun developing packages for
13:02
that C8 Corvette and a pretty good list
13:04
of people who wanted upgrades on that
13:06
car right now that's awesome and also
13:08
that does include z6s for C5 C6 and C7
13:12
as well as ZR1 doesn't it that's correct
13:14
yep that's fantastic let's talk about
13:16
some of the install packages for the C8
13:18
Corvette Ken cuz you had alluded to that
13:20
just a second ago and like you said the
13:23
car itself is great right out of the box
13:24
but you've got some stuff that really
13:26
pumps up power and it was a bigger
13:28
challenge than I think we've ever had I
13:30
think most people know that the engine
13:31
management system in the C8 Corvette is
13:34
completely encrypted and so we couldn't
13:36
tune or build the cars like we had up
13:39
through C7 we really had to get an
13:41
understanding of how that engine
13:42
management system worked and when I say
13:44
encrypted I mean it was very very
13:47
difficult to get in but with some help
13:49
we finally were able to do it initially
13:51
without getting into the engine
13:53
management system we created a intake
13:55
throttle body headers and exhaust and
13:57
that took the car from 495 horsepower
14:00
stock up to almost 600 wow and so that
14:03
was a great start that package runs I
14:05
think something in the 10 to $12,000
14:07
range depending on what you want to do
14:09
with exhaust you really do feel the
14:11
Improvement in the performance right
14:13
away the exhaust tone also I happen to
14:15
have a 2020 car that I got pretty early
14:18
I think it was about the 300th car that
14:20
was built and added this package and
14:22
take throttle body headers and exhaust
14:24
and it's my daily driver to this day the
14:26
noise it makes alone is enough to get a
14:28
corbette guy going that's awesome but
14:31
the Improvement in the horsepower and
14:32
then you know you take it to a show and
14:34
open up the back and show the engine off
14:36
and there's that nice looking carbon
14:38
fiber intake sitting on the top it does
14:40
all the kinds of things you'd hope to to
14:42
Corvette lovers buddy you're talking my
14:44
language with carbon fiber stuff that's
14:46
for sure right and then to make it
14:47
better we've always worked with a lot of
14:49
the companies that build superchargers
14:51
but we've got a special relationship
14:53
with Magnuson and so once we got through
14:55
and understood what we needed to do
14:57
through the engine management system we
14:59
connected with them and of course with
15:01
the room that's in the back we had to
15:02
make sure we had a different style of
15:04
Supercharger so that everything could
15:06
fit underneath there they worked with us
15:08
we developed a supercharger package and
15:11
that package increases the horsepower
15:13
upwards of 700 horsepower maybe even as
15:15
much as 710 horsepower that's amazing
15:18
yeah the noise alone you not only have
15:20
the exhaust tone but you have the wind
15:22
of the supercharger which most of us
15:24
really really like and we like to hear
15:26
it and we like to watch it perform this
15:28
car just amazing that is fantastic Ken
15:31
let's talk about some of the stuff that
15:32
you can get out theart now you mentioned
15:34
Magnuson they've got the superchargers
15:36
we talked about exhausts the carbon
15:38
fiber intake manifold you got fuel pumps
15:41
valve train upgrade kits fuel injectors
15:44
crate engines headers pulley cold air
15:46
intakes and more don't you we've got
15:48
just about the whole menu of things that
15:50
you'd want to do and like I said earlier
15:52
it depends on how you want to enjoy your
15:54
car as to what we want to add when we
15:56
work with a car that somebody wants to
15:57
race we've got Al on brakes we've got a
15:59
lowering system so that the car hugs the
16:01
ground a little bit more Continental has
16:04
always been our tire sponsor and they
16:06
make a extreme contact 2 that frankly my
16:08
wife has used when she's been
16:10
autocrossing her car you know it's a
16:12
street tire but it just holds the road
16:14
incredibly so we've got the whole
16:16
package you know and again it depends on
16:18
how you want to use your car and enjoy
16:19
it there you go and you've also got and
16:21
I love this I saw this online and I
16:23
thought wow I didn't even know you guys
16:25
carried this but you have Corvette body
16:27
components too for C8 C7 and C6 don't
16:30
you yeah we do and there's a few people
16:32
that are out there that do a really
16:34
really good job with that stuff we work
16:36
with ACS quite a bit from up in Canada
16:38
for some of the parts they do NE Wiki's
16:41
got a nice wide body doesn't actually
16:43
take the body but it adds to the
16:44
existence of the regular C8 Corvette and
16:47
gets a little wider stance on the car
16:49
there's a lot of things available and
16:51
we've got cars that we've done in the
16:52
past that people are really really happy
16:55
with so we're very comfortable with the
16:56
partners we work with to get those
16:58
things done that's awesome and tell me
17:00
more about this I saw this and I was
17:02
really intrigued you have a lingan
17:03
felter authorized installer Network tell
17:06
me more about that so you know we have
17:08
two shops we have a shop in decar
17:10
Indiana that was the original shop and
17:12
then we've got a shop up in Michigan
17:13
here in Wixom but the demand on this
17:16
supercharged Corvette required us to
17:18
have some other shops that we could be
17:20
comfortable with and stall the package
17:22
so we did our homework and we picked a
17:24
group of shops that we were really
17:25
comfortable with some brands that had
17:27
been around a long time time and let
17:29
them do the install on the C8 Corvette
17:32
of course they came up we trained them
17:34
we showed them what to do we gave them
17:35
all the benefit of all the wisdom we've
17:37
acquired while we're working in this car
17:40
so right now there are about eight of
17:42
them but we intend to add to that group
17:44
and show some others how to install so
17:46
people don't have to take their car and
17:47
send it all the way to Michigan here to
17:49
get it done you know that's great
17:51
because I am not a wrencher I love power
17:53
but I'm not good with my hands so having
17:55
this network of people that can do the
17:56
installs is fantastic well it's a great
17:59
group of people and obviously you know
18:00
we've been around 50 years and so I want
18:02
to make sure that the companies that we
18:04
choose are going to keep up the
18:05
standards that we've had I mean we've
18:07
got a really really solid brand and the
18:09
reason we have it is because we've made
18:11
sure that everything gets done right
18:13
we're doing the right kind of training
18:15
we're making sure that we're there when
18:17
these shops need us for something that
18:18
might come up and we're only trying to
18:20
pick the best of the best fantastic well
18:23
buddy let's take our final break in
18:24
segment number three we're going to
18:26
actually talk to Ken's wife Kristen
