2:43
today's show, I thought I'd give you a
2:44
wrap-up of the Amelia Island car
2:46
concours and the unveiling of the three
2:48
Cunningham cars from Lama in 1960. This
2:52
was a really interesting trip and a fun
2:54
show. It was really epic as far as
2:56
Corvettes are concerned. First of all,
2:58
let's give the backstory about the cars
3:00
at Lama. In 1960, Briggs Cunningham took
3:03
three cars to race at Lama. The number
3:06
one car crashed. The number two car had
3:09
developed engine failure. The number
3:11
three car did finish, the only one. It
3:13
finished first in its class, which was
3:15
the GT class, and it finished eighth
3:18
overall. Now, that number three car was
3:20
owned by Chip Miller. When Chip passed
3:22
away, his son, Lance Miller, was the
3:24
steward of the car. Lance has since sold
3:27
that car to a private owner who was
3:28
there at the show. The number two car
3:31
was owned by Bruce Meyer from the
3:33
Peterson Automotive Museum. Bruce worked
3:35
with Kevin McCay from Corvette Repair in
3:38
Valley Stream, New York on Long Island
3:40
to arrange bringing his number two car
3:42
to Amelia Island for this unveiling. So
3:45
back in the 60s, after all these cars
3:48
raced, they were just sent back to the
3:50
United States and put back to Street
3:52
Spec and sold off. But then no one
3:54
realized how historic these three
3:56
Cunningham cars would be. If you listen
3:59
to Corvette Today number 146 at the end
4:02
of January, Kevin McCay tells the entire
4:04
story of these Cunningham cars from Lama
4:07
in 1960 and puts them back together. So,
4:10
the number one car was never found until
4:12
a few years ago by Kevin McCay. There's
4:15
lots of legal issues that happened with
4:17
that car and the number one car was
4:19
taken to court. So, finally a judge
4:21
said, "Sell the car at auction." Well,
4:24
it was purchased in 2021 by Briggs
4:26
Cunningham's grandson and given to Kevin
4:29
McKay at Corvette Repair on Long Island
4:31
to refurbish. So, this would be the
4:34
first time that all three cars have been
4:36
back together since 1960. And they
4:39
debuted there at the Amelia Island
4:41
concourse. Kevin said, "Steve, you've
4:43
got to be at this event. This is going
4:45
to be Corvette history." So, I went. So,
4:48
Amelia Island is a premier concourse.
4:50
It's similar to Pebble Beach. This is
4:52
just obviously on the east coast in
4:54
Florida. Three days, lots of beautiful
4:57
cars, lots of multi-million dollar cars.
5:00
They had lots of booths there. A lot of
5:01
brands were there on display as well.
5:04
This was held at the Ritz Carlton Hotel.
5:06
So, as you can imagine, everything was
5:08
pretty darn expensive, including
5:10
parking. Every day was $40 per car to
5:13
park. So, I flew in Friday morning and
5:15
then Friday afternoon, Kevin McKay was
5:18
on a panel there at the Ritz Carlton
5:20
about Corvette racing. He was on the
5:22
panel with Dan Binks, the retired crew
5:24
chief for Corvette Racing, Ray Everham,
5:27
also English Corvette racer Justin Bell,
5:30
and then Tom Carter. Tom is the famous
5:32
barn fine Hunter. On display for that
5:35
panel discussion was the number three
5:37
car from 1960 along with Lance's C5R
5:40
Corvette. That car was driven by Dale
5:43
Nhard and Dale Nhard Jr. and it's one of
5:46
Lance's all-time favorite Corvettes.
5:49
also the John Greenwood Spirit of Lama
5:51
from 1976.
5:53
After the panel, I helped Kevin and his
5:55
team from Corvette Repair bring all
5:58
three 1960 cars back into the ballroom
6:00
where they were going to be revealed
6:02
that night. We set up all three of the
6:04
Cunningham cars in front of the stage
6:07
just the way they were set up at Lama
6:09
before they raced in 1960. And
6:12
naturally, we covered up the number one
6:14
car for the reveal. So that night,
6:16
Friday night, 300 to 400 people were
6:19
attending the reveal. The event was
6:21
hosted by Michael Brown from Corvette
6:23
Nation fame. And first off, the
6:25
documentary about the number three
6:27
Cunningham car called The Quest that
6:29
Michael Brown did was shown to that
6:31
packed house of people. After that, the
6:34
crew from Corvette Repair came up. They
6:36
pulled away the cover on the number one
6:38
car and all three Cunningham cars were
6:40
there together again for the first time
6:43
in 63 years. It was a really moving
6:47
moment. As a matter of fact, it was
6:48
pretty cool because Kevin McCay even
6:50
dressed up as Briggs Cunningham himself.
6:53
He had a 1960 race suit on and a full
6:56
mask that looked eerily like Briggs
6:58
Cunningham himself. It was pretty cool.
7:00
He welcomed the crowd to the unveiling
7:02
and invited everyone to come up and see
7:04
all three cars together again at long
7:06
last. As a matter of fact, Briggs
7:08
Cunningham's daughter was there and
7:10
Briggs Cunningham's grandson who now
7:13
owns that number one car. There were a
7:15
lot of other dignitaries there. It was a
7:17
terrific evening and a true milestone in
7:20
Corvette history having all three
7:22
Cunningham cars back together again for
7:24
the first time since 1960. Let's take
7:27
our first break and when we come back,
7:29
I'll talk to you about what happened on
7:30
Saturday at the Amelia Island Car
7:32
Concourse here on Corvette Today. We all

11:25
In this second segment, we're going to
11:26
talk more about the Amelia Island
11:28
concours and the unveiling of the three
11:31
1960 cars that raced at Lama here on
11:34
Corvette today. Now, Saturday at Amelia
11:36
Island is called Cars and Community.
11:38
You'll see multi-million dollar cars
11:40
sitting next to maybe a C7 or C6
11:43
Corvette, which is also sitting next to
11:45
a Shelby Mustang. Sitting next to cars
11:47
you've never seen or heard before as
11:49
well. It's not the big concourse day.
11:52
It's more of where you and I would show
11:54
our Corvettes at a show on a weekend. So
11:56
on Saturdays they also have this is
11:59
really fun. It's called the Concor de Le
12:02
or the Lemon's Concourse. I don't know
12:04
if you ever watch Chasing Classic Cars
12:06
with Wayne Karini, but he goes to this
12:09
Amelia Island car concors every year and
12:11
he always buys a lemon car to display at
12:14
the concourse de lemon. It was fun
12:17
walking through that section and seeing
12:18
that. As a matter of fact, when I parked
12:20
my rental car, that was the first thing
12:21
I came upon was the conc.
12:25
Porsches were all over the place. Very,
12:27
very strong. I can't tell you how many
12:29
Porsches I saw driving up and down the
12:31
streets on the lawn. It was amazing. I
12:35
mentioned that to someone I was walking
12:36
with and they said, "Yeah, Porsches are
12:38
always out in full force at Amelia
12:40
Island." So, I'm walking up and down the
12:42
aisles of cars and they're all on the
12:45
golf course there at the Ritz Carlton.
12:47
So, at the end of the row, I come up on
12:50
a guy who owns one of the C8 Cunningham
12:53
60th anniversary Lama series Corvettes.
12:55
Have you heard of these? These are
12:57
really pretty cool cars. I see them
12:59
advertised in various magazines.
13:01
Cunningham Automotive was started by
13:03
Brics Cunningham and it still exists
13:05
today. So, in honor of this from Lama,
13:08
they're taking CA Corvettes and making
13:10
honorary cars in honor of these three
13:12
Cunningham Corvettes and they're
13:14
available for purchase. There are only
13:16
60 of them made and each car is
13:19
$160,000.
13:21
They're very cool cars, lots of carbon
13:24
fiber. They're white cars with the dual
13:26
blue racing stripes just like the 1960
13:29
cars that raced at Lama. Lingan Filter
13:31
has enhanced the engine and each C8
13:34
Corvette has added special touches to
13:36
the trunk and the frunk liners. also
13:38
exposed carbon fiber on the trunk and
13:41
the frunk lids, special door sills,
13:43
B-pillar badging, and lots more. So, the
13:46
owner of this car was talking to people
13:48
when I walked up, and I didn't want to
13:50
bother him. But when he was done with
13:52
those other people, they walked away,
13:53
and he saw me still looking at his car,
13:56
and he comes over. I was checking out
13:58
his baby, which by the way was the
14:00
number seven car out of 60 cars. He
14:02
introduced himself. His name was Wayne.
14:04
We were talking about his Corvette and
14:06
he said, "Hey, aren't you Steve
14:08
Garrett?" And I said, "Yes, I am." He
14:10
said, "Steve, I love your podcast and
14:13
your show." I was stunned. I was
14:15
shocked. I said, "You know about
14:17
Corvette Today?" He said, "Steve, I
14:19
haven't missed an episode in 2 years."
14:22
Well, naturally, I was pretty shocked
14:23
and amazed all at the same time. And I
14:26
thanked Wayne for being a faithful
14:27
Corvette Today follower. Then he said
14:30
something to me that has never been said
14:32
to me before. He said, "Steve, would you
14:34
sign my C8 Cunningham Corvette?" I was
14:38
stunned. No one has ever asked me to
14:40
sign their car before. I said, "Wayne, I
14:43
don't want to ruin or devalue your car,
14:46
but thank you. I couldn't do that,
14:48
though." He said, "Steve, actually, it's
14:50
quite the contrary. I feel like your
14:52
signature would add value to my C8
14:54
Cunningham car." Well, after about five
14:57
minutes of going back and forth with
14:59
Wayne, he finally convinced me to sign
15:01
the frunk surround of his $160,000
15:05
C8 Cunningham tribute Corvette. Now, you
15:08
know how everybody says in the car
15:10
industries pictures or it never
15:12
happened. Well, if you watch the YouTube
15:14
video of this Corvette today episode, I
15:16
took two pictures of where I signed
15:19
Wayne's car, his number seven CAM
15:22
Corvette, and you can see them right
15:23
there. Let's take our final break and
15:26
coming up I'll talk about what happened
15:27
on Sunday at the Amelia Island concours
15:30
here on Corvette today.

16:17
Hey honey, are you awake?
16:19
I am now.
16:20
I can't sleep. Since turning 50, I keep
16:23
dreaming of a red door and a blue door.
16:24
Somehow knowing there are only choices
16:26
for retirement.
16:28
Okay.
16:29
Through the red door, we outlive our
16:30
money. We have to rely on our kids.
16:32
We're stuck on a fixed income. It's
16:34
terrifying.
16:35
Yeah, that would suck.
16:36
But through the blue door, our money
16:38
outlives us. We retire on our terms. Our
16:41
kids stay our kids, not our caretakers.
16:43
We make work optional.
16:45
Yes, that's much better. That's what I
16:47
want, too. But what do we do?
16:49
We call True Wealth and Company at

19:13
I'm your host Steve Garrett. We are
19:15
talking about the Amelia Island Concor
19:17
where all three Cunningham Corvettes
19:19
that raced in 1960 at Lama were back
19:22
together for the first time in 63 years.
19:25
The final day was Sunday. Sunday is the
19:27
big concourse day. I got smart. I
19:30
arrived early about 7:30 in the morning
19:32
and I got to park along the street that
19:34
leads up to the Ritz Carlton instead of
19:36
parking for $40 a day. So that worked
19:39
out pretty well. I started walking in
19:41
and there was a McLaren P1 when they let
19:44
everybody into the car concours at
19:46
10:00. It had a root beer type of
19:49
finish, kind of like the caffeine finish
19:50
on the C8 Corvettes. It was probably a
19:53
$15 million car. And there it was on the
19:57
green. It was roped off. You couldn't
19:59
touch it. But man, that was so cool to
20:01
see. Lots of Ferraris, Lamborghinis,
20:04
Aston Martins, and Bentleys. The
20:06
highlights were seeing some of my
20:08
favorite Lamborghinis that were there
20:10
that I had loved growing up. There was a
20:12
purple 50th anniversary Diablo there. I
20:14
was drooling over that. Some Countaches
20:17
and some Muras as well. Ferraris, lots
20:20
of Ferraris, many vintage ones that were
20:22
several millions of dollars. Also,
20:25
Ferrari had a Monza SP2 on display,
20:28
which is really, really cool to see the
20:29
new one. Also, Ford had quite a few GTs,
20:32
and they were open for display. You
20:34
could almost get in them. Many of these
20:36
cars are not roped off, so you can
20:38
really get up close and personal just
20:40
looking at the cars. I was really
20:42
excited to see a Bugatti there. They had
20:44
an EB10 on display. That was so cool to
20:47
see. Also, lots of McLarens were on
20:49
display. As you walked up to the Ritz
20:51
Carlton, they had a display right there
20:52
in the Circle Drive in front of the
20:54
hotel itself. That was really, really
20:56
sharp. Maserati had some MC20s there on
21:00
display. That is their new hypercar
21:02
offering. It was also great to see
21:04
Glickenhouse. Glicken House had two cars
21:07
there. They are an American racer. So
21:09
many of these cars I've seen in pictures
21:10
and videos, but never in person. You
21:13
could get up close and personal with
21:14
them. They were not roped off. One of
21:16
the highlights I thought was pretty
21:18
cool, they had four Ferrari Enzos there
21:20
together on display. There are two red
21:23
ones, a yellow one, and then a navy blue
21:26
Enzo. I had never seen a navy blue Enzo
21:29
before, either in person or in pictures.
21:31
So, they were all four there together.
21:33
That was really cool to see. Also, they
21:36
had an Aston Martin Valkyrie. This is
21:38
their new hypercar. It was just sitting
21:40
there. It was wide open. You could
21:42
almost sit down and start the car. You
21:45
could walk right up to it, look inside.
21:47
It was really, really cool. A lot of car
21:49
brands were there, too, on display with
21:51
big booths on Sunday. General Motors had
21:53
a large booth. It was really cool to see
21:55
that. And they had the new Hummer EV, a
21:58
Buick Wildcat EV concept cars, and they
22:02
had two C8 Corvette -ition
22:06
spec, which is the silver with the new
22:08
racing stripe, and then they had a red
22:11
mist metallic one there. And I never
22:12
seen a red mist or a red-ay in person at
22:16
all or even in pictures. So that was
22:18
really cool to see that sitting next to
22:20
the launch edition spec. Polestar also
22:23
had their brand new car there. That was
22:25
really cool to see. And again, if you
22:27
watch the video to this episode, you can
22:29
see all these pictures on the video from
22:31
YouTube. It was also great to see a mix
22:34
of classic cars that you could just walk
22:36
up to and also concept cars that were
22:38
not roped off. There was a C8 Z06 on the
22:41
lawn which I was glad to see well
22:43
represented along with some C7s and some
22:46
C6s. It was also interesting to see
22:48
there was a Corvette there. I want to
22:50
tell you about this. It was from 1955.
22:53
It was GM's 1955 proposal car. So this
22:58
car was supposed to show a GM what they
23:00
could do with body style changes that
23:02
they could make to the 1953 Corvette.
23:05
This was Harley Earl's styling
23:07
department that did this car. So this
23:10
was SO2151.
23:12
It was completed in March of 1955.
23:15
So from 1954 to 74, the car was
23:18
virtually hidden in California. In 75, a
23:22
man named George Campbell, who lives in
23:24
Oregon, saw it advertised in Hemings for
23:27
$3500.
23:28
It was sold with a California pink slip.
23:31
And George owned the car for 40 years
23:33
and never had it titled. Well, the man
23:35
who owns the car now had a title,
23:38
completely restored it, and I talked to
23:40
him, gave him one of my cards from
23:41
Corvette today. It was really, really
23:43
cool to see. Lots of old vintage racers
23:46
were there. A Mercedes 300 SL Gullwing
23:49
was there. That's a cool car. There was
23:51
also from Ford a Air Force Thunderbirds
23:54
tribute car and a Ford Mustang. That was
23:56
really neat to see. I'm not a blue oval
23:58
guy. I'm a GM and Chevrolet guy, but it
24:00
was still neat to see. And finally, the
24:03
three 1960 Cunningham Corvettes were on
24:06
the lawn as well. As a matter of fact,
24:08
they were sitting right in front of the
24:09
GM stand. The number one Cunningham
24:12
Corvette was judged with Kevin McKay
24:14
holding court with all the judges,
24:16
showing them the finer points of the
24:18
number one car. The number three car was
24:20
judged best in class out of the 10 cars
24:22
in its class and got that top award. It
24:25
was so fun. This is my first time at a
24:28
major concours car show and I hope it
24:30
won't be my last. Congratulations to
24:32
Kevin McCay and all of his crew at
24:35
Corvette Repair in Valley Stream, New
24:37
York on Long Island. That car, the
24:39
number one car, looked fantastic. It was
24:42
so cool to see all three Cunningham cars
24:45
that raced in Lama in 1960 together
24:48
again for the first time in 63 years.
