so this means it has been over 10 years if we are starting to support yui's style high speed type bulging part

well i'll tell you steve we've been around long enough for me to have silver gray hair so we started the

company and we started manufacturing this product back in the late 1980s wow the technology was first introduced

to general motors including corvette back in 1989. we started out as a sealant manufacturer

back in the day what we made and what we formulated were very very good adhesive materials

that bonded to virtually every automotive substrate including the fiberglass shell of a

corvette thermoplastic polyolefins sheet metal oily metal our product would bond to

virtually anything and it's really where we got our start still today steve we're the only

company in the aftermarket that manufactures their own product here in the united states and frankly it's something that it was a

foundation principle that i started this company and the hush map brand i swore that i would never ever

manufacture this product anywhere other than the usa and i've lived up to that to this day

that's really cool let's talk more specifically about corvettes then tim what does hush matt do for corvettes and

for the corvette owner i'll tell you what our product does in the corvette is a perfect

example since the first one rolled off out in flint michigan which many people

outside of the corvette world don't realize the actual first corvette was built in flint but since the day that that first car

was built all the way up to the current model today the vehicle chassis was never

thermal insulation i mean let's face it the corvette is beautiful it's incredible horsepower it's

but what i hear from corvette owners all over the globe is i love the car but man after i drive

it for 30 minutes on a freeway or on a concrete groove surface i'm just stressed out it's noisy it's

hot so what our product does is it provides a more comfortable interior for that

corvette owner they get all of the power they get all of the other attributes all the reasons that they buy corvettes

and drive corvettes and frankly love corvettes since they first purchased one our product makes that corvette more

driver and passenger ear and what they are is their drums i mean essentially that road noise just

the other fallacy that we often hear from the corvette world is hey it's going to add too much weight

it's going to add too much weight you put a sack of groceries in the back seat of a corvette you've basically added the same amount

of weight that you would with the hush map product it's a very lightweight less than a half a pound per square foot material

so on a standard size corvette and this is a hundred percent coverage of the firewall the floor

the doors the roof and the trunk you're going to only add about 30 pounds of material at maximum to that vehicle so it's

having me we're glad to have you here drew give us a quick history about hall tech systems

you bet hall tech is named after the company's founder jim hall i'm guessing most of

your listeners know who jim is he's a very respected and well-known icon in the corvette space in 1999

in his garage in california if i have the story correct jim discovered that the cold air intakes
23:44
that he was developing were doing quite well and his circle of friends started asking for his help to help them
23:51
a little bit and it didn't take long for jim to realize that he had something special going on and so in the late 90s
23:58
jim started hall tech systems and ran primarily out of the state of california where he lived at the time

a few years later for medical reasons he relocated to wisconsin to fight cancer and took a little bit of a hiatus from
24:11
the industry for a year or two like jim always does he kind of came out a winner as it relates to his cancer and
24:17
got the company going again and successfully has been running halt tech systems and has become
24:23
like i said a well-known and respected individual in the aftermarket intake space
24:29
primarily for corvette owners and kind of in that corvette arena also drew hall tech is really recognized
24:35
in the world of corvette as the leader in cold air intakes which generations of corvette does hall
24:41
tech have cais for well we sell cold air intakes for the
24:46
fifth sixth and seventh generation of corvettes so the c5 the c6 and the c7 starting back as early as
24:53
1997 up through the existing c7 through 2019

c7s and everything in between got it also talk a little bit about the research and

development that goes into every hall tech cold air intake you bet jim's background really was in tuning and so

haltech really was born out of an expertise in tuning and airflow and understanding of airflow
25:19
laminar and turbulent fluid flow but maybe the best example might be our most
25:24
recent example and we're going to talk about this later in the segment i assume but the new c8 corvette the first thing
25:30
we want to do is make sure that it fits and so we've actually 3d scanned the stock intake
25:35
we know exactly what the envelope it needs to fit in and we from a design perspective we need
25:42
to make sure that anything we design fits in the available real estate in the
25:47
engine cavity we did the same thing with the c7 we have to make sure that what we designed fits and we also at the same
25:54
time have to worry about airflow we have to worry about all of the little nuances associated with
26:00
intake design filters the math block positioning the transition from filter to the intake
26:07
and again from the intake to the throttle body and there's so many different throttle body configurations
26:12
out there that we need to have enough foresight to ensure that the intake design that we come up with
26:18
is compatible with a variety of throttle body positions throttle body sizes as well as filters
26:24
so it's not as straightforward as some would think but we really take a very engineering approach to the
26:31
design of our intakes both in their form and their function and you also have two kinds you have a
26:37
polymer intake and for me i love this there's a carbon fiber intake as well
26:42
that's fantastic it is fantastic and it really satisfies a wide variety of
26:48
the customers out there a lot of people buy carbon fiber because the way it looks it's lighter but man it looks great in
26:56
many cases it also performs better because it's thinner and the same intake tube will be
27:01
thinner which means more air is available for your engine to swallow as it's hauling
27:07
down the road and so we offer both carbon fiber and polymer for our c6
27:13
and our c7 intakes for the c5 it's only the polymer version which are by the way
27:18
a cross-linked polyethylene which is a very military-grade polyethylene perfect for under hood
27:25
applications currently in development is the polymer version of our c8 intake
27:30
very nice and talk about the horsepower and torque gains on all of your cold air intakes drew
27:36
well it would take a long time to talk about all of them but maybe i could highlight a couple of them sure if we start maybe with the c5 one

of our c5 intakes is a conversion system where we actually remove the stock
27:48
math and replace it with a more current blade style math but in that c5 conversion we are seeing
27:54
horsepower gains of up to 24 horsepower gains at the wheel and in our c6 intakes we see anywhere

from 15 to 35 horsepower gains one of our most popular intakes for our c6 is what we call our
28:09
killer b that comes in a couple different configurations but with a tune we're seeing upwards of 35 increase in
28:16
horsepower at the rear wheel probably our most popular version of our c7 is called our stinger for the zl6
28:24
and our intake alone is generating between 40 to 45 horsepower and with the tune they're seeing upwards
28:31
of 55 horsepower gain with boosts of 12 torque gains of 12 so
28:37
each of our systems are designed really to provide an increase in horsepower and torque
28:42
and boost that's always been a target for us every time we develop one and the naming convention is really kind
28:47
of unique how did that all come about jim hall when he started hall tech
28:52
systems in the late 90s in california consequently years later when i met him we both have
28:58
some ties to the lds faith which is headquartered in utah and for the
29:04
history buffs out there may know that utah is the beehive state so as a nod to those roots jim started naming his
29:11
product line along those lines and so the c5 family of intakes are typically called
29:17
venoms and our c6 family of intakes are all called killer bees
29:23
the c7 intakes are all called stingers we have other products standalone products one of which is called a
29:29
beehive we have something else called the honeycomb disc as a teaser our c8 intake will be called
29:34
the hornet very nice that's where that naming convention comes from that's cool now you guys make cold air intakes for
29:41
more than just corvette don't you we do indeed we have one model of intake for the camaro
29:47
there was a beauty contest once upon a time with all the different available intakes at the time and
29:53
haltech won the contest but that's our only non-corvette intake is for that camaro but a lot of

people will buy components of our intakes and treat them as generic versions so you take our filter with our
30:07
intake tube and in as much as it can fit in your engine cavity and couple with your throttle body
30:14
a lot of our components can be used as generic intake systems but by way of design
30:20
everything we offer is for corvettes besides that one camaro intake which by the way is called a yellow jacket

there you go keeping with that beehive theme that sounds good how is the c8 intake coming along okay

late last year we had one prototype that we designed and put together and stuck it up on a dyno

the results were positive but not positive enough to complement our reputation so we went back to the
30:45
drawing board and spent the next couple months re-engineering an entire intake from the ground up it will
30:51
replace the entire stock intake box and lid and filter it will use some of the stock
30:58
components like the left and right inlet duct it will use the stock throttle body transition hose and pcv

connector fitting it is coming along great i can't share the numbers just yet but i will say that

we preliminarily download it last night actually the results were better than we anticipated and we
31:17
already anticipated some pretty good numbers and so it's not going to be many more months before we will transition from our

3d printed prototypes to full scale production so i think by the end of the summer we will

be launching our hornet for the c8 intake that's awesome now if someone wants to
