3:56
welcome to Corvette today hey thank you
3:59
thank you for having me you bet Robert I
4:01
always start off this way with our
4:03
guests tell me about where you grew up
4:05
do you have any siblings and did you
4:06
come from a car family yeah well you
4:08
know I grew up the great state of Texas
4:10
South Texas down by Corpus Christie we
4:12
were a car family in that we worked on
4:14
our cars my granddaddy was a Master
4:17
Mechanic for about 55 years for
4:19
Chevrolet so he was a Chevrolet man that
4:21
was instilled on me early on we always
4:24
enjoyed working on our own cars my uncle
4:26
had a couple Corvettes that we loved to
4:30
a lot of good memories about that so
4:32
cars were very much part of our
4:33
upbringing that's cool so they were
4:35
important to you as you were growing up
4:37
with your grandad and everything right
4:39
that's right yeah cars were a big part
4:40
of our family for sure was there a
4:43
certain car that you were attached to as
4:44
a young boy since your granddad had some
4:46
Corvettes maybe that was the one that
4:48
really kind of leaned your direction
4:51
well it was my uncle that had Corvettes
4:53
my Grandad he was big into El Caminos oh
4:56
he loved his El Caminos and I remember
4:58
growing up and you still kind of smell
5:00
the fabric in those cars on a hot Texas
5:03
day you know it was really unique and
5:05
I've always really loved the alamino
5:07
myself too that's really cool where did
5:09
you go to school what did you study and
5:11
what is your degree in well it's
5:13
interesting story I fell into theater in
5:15
high school and I really enjoyed that
5:18
did a lot there and wanted to go into
5:20
film so I went to the University of
5:22
North Texas for a year until I realized
5:25
I wanted to act in films oh I auditioned
5:28
I got into Carnegie melon University in
5:30
Pittsburgh and transferred up there and
5:32
had to start over as a freshman and was
5:34
there for four years and graduated with
5:36
a degree in drama very nice well I tell
5:38
you what Robert let's take our first
5:40

4231 I'm your host Steve Garrett with me
8:58
is the brand new director director of
8:59
Collections and exhibitions at the
9:01
National Corvette Museum Robert
9:03
maxheimer in the second segment we're
9:05
going to talk about Robert's work career
9:07
Robert right out of school you got your
9:09
degree what did you do right out of
9:10
school well you know I was trying to pay
9:12
the bills I moved out to Los Angeles to
9:15
become a big movie star I fell into
9:17
carpentry I had a little background with
9:19
that working with my dad's I worked at a
9:21
carpentry Scenic fabrication shop there
9:24
in the San Fernando Valley for about
9:26
four years building traveling
9:28
exhibitions and permanent Museum
9:30
exhibitions and installing them all over
9:32
the world that was a pretty fun gig I
9:34
left there when I was a production
9:35
manager and then decided I needed to
9:37
focus on acting again so I had a couple
9:40
roles on some shows and couple films and
9:43
realized pretty quickly that I needed a
9:45
full-time job if I wanted to actually
9:47
have a family which was my ultimate goal
9:50
so I got into the Fine Art handling
9:53
installation world so we worked at LACMA
9:56
theti and mocha and a bunch of museums
9:58
around Los Angeles and one of our
10:00
clients was Disney oh and you worked at
10:03
Disney for almost 10 years that had to
10:05
be an exciting experience it was it was
10:07
I started working there right when I got
10:09
married and we had our first child so
10:12
working at Disney I was a All-Star dad
10:14
got to bring home a lot of stuff and
10:16
then we visited the park whenever we
10:17
wanted to but the job itself was pretty
10:19
unique I was at the Disney archives
10:22
started as a curatorial Associates we
10:24
oversaw the collections the exhibitions
10:27
displays at the various parks and club
10:29
33s and things all over the world when I
10:32
started we had a staff of about 10 and
10:35
when I left which was almost 10 years
10:37
later we were at like 32 so it grew
10:40
pretty rapidly but it was a fantastic
10:42
experience for sure boy you had to love
10:44
the perks as well that had to be
10:46
fantastic yes it was now your job with
10:48
Disney was really multifaceted you
10:51
worked with business partners you
10:52
created worldwide exhibits which
10:54
included Disney consumer products also
10:56
the Disney Studios and the parks and
10:58
resorts tell me a little bit more about
11:00
all that that sounds fascinating yeah
11:02
there really wasn't an exhibition
11:04
program when we started the archives was
11:06
part of corporate and part of dccr which
11:09
was our arm to help the rest of the
11:11
company so if somebody in Japan and
11:14
consumer products needed help with
11:16
something or they wanted an exhibit
11:18
because they're rolling out a new
11:19
princess line they would reach out to us
11:21
and we would pull things out of the
11:23
archives develop an exhibition curated
11:25
and then travel it through Japan we did
11:27
that there in Hong Kong and Taiwan UAE
11:30
London eventually my wife got tired of
11:33
me traveling all the time so I pitched
11:35
the idea of why don't we do a domestic
11:37
tour you know we're doing all this work
11:39
overseas so we should try to develop
11:41
something that we can travel here and
11:43
that's what we did we built a catalog of
11:45
about four exhibits that travel around
11:47
the United States including the Disney
11:49
100 exhibition which is still traveling
11:51
now as a matter of fact the Disney 100
11:53
exhibition is here in Kansas City right
11:55
now that's right yeah I'm dying to get
11:57
down there and see that that's really
11:59
cool cool so you really were the
12:00
spokesperson for the Disney archives
12:02
weren't you then yeah you know being the
12:05
person kind of in charge of exhibitions
12:07
I would go out overse the installation
12:09
and then inevitably especially in Japan
12:11
there was a lot of press a lot of
12:13
autographs which was very bizarre to me
12:15
it was a lot of fun a company like
12:17
Disney people just love the brand so it
12:20
was a lot of fun talking to people
12:22
showing them new things from the
12:23
archives there weren't a lot of unhappy
12:25
people so it it was a lot of fun that
12:28
sounds like a lot of fun now after you
12:29
were at Disney you went to the San Diego
12:32
History Center you were their manager of
12:34
exhibitions and Facilities there too
12:36
that's correct yeah so when I was at
12:38
Disney I went to the Harvard Extension
12:41
school to get a certificate of Museum
12:44
studies just to kind of expand my
12:46
knowledge of museums and really fell in
12:48
love with nonprofits and everything that
12:50
they do for communities so that led me
12:52
to make the hard decision to leave
12:55
Disney and accept an offer at the San
12:57
Diego History Center which was a great
12:59
introduction to working in a nonprofit a
13:02
lot different it was a much different
13:04
pace but the community the staff
13:06
everyone it was all about the greater
13:08
good which is what I really really loved
13:11
yeah it really sounds like all of your
13:13
work career with the San Diego History
13:15
Center and with Disney really laid the
13:17
groundwork for your new position there
13:19
at the National Corvette Museum didn't
13:20
it absolutely yeah you know you couldn't
13:22
script it any better going from Disney
13:25
and then to the San Diego History Center
13:27
for a couple years just to kind kind of
13:29
decompress and really learn the ins and
13:31
outs of working in a nonprofit and then
13:33
when the National Corvette Museum
13:35
reached out and said they had a position
13:38
obviously the transition from Southern
13:40
California to Bowling Green Kentucky can
13:44
change especially for my wife who was
13:46
born and raised in La Hoya California
13:49
but it's been a fantastic journey and
13:51
like you said it really laid the ground
13:53
work for where I am now I want to talk
13:55
about that let's take our final break
13:57
Robert when we get back I want to hear
13:59
more about that because it's always a
14:01
cool story to hear how you got in
14:03
contact with the National Corvette
14:04
Museum and how you got the job that
14:06
you're in right now so let's take that
14:08
final break when we come back we're

4231 I'm your host Steve Garrett with me
17:19
is the new National Corvette Museum
17:21
director of Collections and Exhibits
17:23
Robert maxheimer in this final segment
17:25
we're going to talk more about his job
17:27
there at the NCM Robert I always love
17:30
these stories tell me the story about
17:32
how you found out about the position at
17:33
the National Corvette Museum and how you
17:35
got the job yeah well it was a job that
17:38
was posted on LinkedIn I wasn't
17:40
necessarily looking for a new position
17:42
especially one outside of California but
17:44
it came up I've always had a fascination
17:46
with Corvette and from a 5,000 foot view
17:49
just the brand and the folks that are
17:51
involved with Corvette it remind me a
17:53
lot of Disney so I was really excited
17:56
the idea of working with people that
17:57
were really passionate about One
17:59
Singular thing like the Corvette so yeah
18:01
they reached out we spoke about it and I
18:03
talked it over with my wife and
18:05
everything moved very quickly I think
18:06
from the time that the job was offered
18:08
so when we were actually in a house that
18:10
we had just bought moved in it was only
18:12
a couple months wow that is Fast Very
18:15
yeah yeah and like we said in the
18:17
previous segment it really sounds like
18:19
all your job experience has led you to
18:21
Bowling Green almost you're in charge of
18:24
the collections of the Corvettes you're
18:26
also in charge of more than 50,000
18:28
Corvette arti facts and Exhibits you got
18:30
a good team working with you there at
18:31
the NCM tell me after all that what was
18:34
like your first order of business once
18:36
you arrived at the National Corvette
18:37
Museum well it was a bit of a whirlwind
18:39
coming in obviously two months and
18:41
trying to adjust to A Whole New Town a
18:43
whole new part of the country on a
18:44
personal level coming into the museum I
18:47
really wanted to take a breath and get
18:49
to know not just the museum itself but
18:51
the staff what has been established here
18:54
as far as protocols and really try to
18:56
identify things that maybe I could help
18:58
smooth move along as far as some
19:00
challenges or things that might have
19:01
been here and getting to know the
19:03
collection becoming more well-versed
19:04
with Corvette and the history of
19:06
Corvette so that was kind of the first
19:08
six months now it's about implementing
19:10
that change and having a clear goal for
19:12
the future is there any area of the
19:14
National Corvette Museum that you felt
19:16
needed some immediate attention you know
19:18
I'll be honest I came in I was very
19:21
fortunate that a lot of the key players
19:23
have been put in place within our
19:25
library and archives our curator who's
19:27
on board here Brian Gable was fantastic
19:29
we have a registar who's also comes from
19:32
a long line of Museum background it
19:34
wasn't like coming into something
19:36
completely in shambles everyone knew
19:38
what they were doing everyone was very
19:40
passionate about what they were doing it
19:42
was lucky for me that I didn't have to
19:44
come in and immediately fix anything it
19:46
was more about setting some clear
19:47
objectives for the immediate future and
19:50
kind of long term too that's good to
19:52
hear what's your vision for the ncm's
19:54
exhibits and collections as we move
19:56
forward Robert well I believe that the
19:59
museum needs to mirror what Corvette
20:01
itself embodies and that's a constant
20:04
change and pushing themselves from a
20:07
technological standpoint but also an
20:09
aesthetic standpoint of being the number
20:12
one sports car in the world I think the
20:14
museum has the capability of being the
20:16
top automobile museum in the world I
20:18
really believe that as long as we keep
20:20
pushing ourselves and challenging
20:21
ourselves we have the ability to achieve
20:24
that you know education is something
20:25
that I now oversee too and that's a big
20:29
I think that we have also the capability
20:31
of being the number one education
20:33
institution in Kentucky in this part of
20:35
the country there's a lot going for us
20:37
we're headed in the right direction you
20:38
know the exhibitions coming from Disney
20:41
my whole thing was edutainment you know
20:43
you get people in the door they're
20:44
already excited you engage them
20:46
emotionally then you can engage them
20:49
intellectually they kind of drop their
20:51
veil in a way and you're allowed to show
20:53
them something that maybe they wouldn't
20:55
have normally noticed at Disney it was
20:57
about animation was about costumes props
21:00
and here it's about the automobile it's
21:02
not just Corvette it's the history of
21:05
the automobile industry there's like I
21:07
said technology the physics there's just
21:09
so many different things that we can tap
21:11
into yeah definitely now you mentioned
21:13
this a little bit earlier but coming
21:15
from La Hoya and Southern California
21:17
how's it been and transitioning over to
21:19
Bowling Green it's been really nice
21:22
because we got here I think it was 9°
21:26
ground it was a little rough there the
21:28
first week but what I've noticed is
21:30
people say it all the time you don't
21:31
like the weather just wait a couple
21:33
hours and it'll change yep and that's
21:35
true but spring all the flowers came in
21:38
the trees bloomed and it's just been
21:40
absolutely gorgeous and there is so much
21:42
to do around here and around Bowling
21:45
Green in Kentucky and Tennessee my
21:47
family and I we've just had a blast
21:49
exploring all those places so we're
21:51
really really enjoying it that's awesome
21:53
