takes to get your Corvette ready for
3:24
delivery at the Museum his name is Rod
3:27
Keller Rod welcome to Corvette today
3:29
buddy hey Steve thanks so much for
3:31
having me on it's great speaking to you
3:33
again I know last time we talked we're
3:34
both in freezing weather so I'm looking
3:36
forward to a little warmth today
3:38
absolutely well first off buddy let's
3:40
talk more personally about you tell me
3:42
about where you grew up do you have
3:44
siblings did you come from a car family
3:46
Steve interesting enough I grew up in
3:48
the State of Florida and I was there for
3:51
the majority of my younger years we
3:54
actually relocated to Atlanta Georgia
3:56
and I finished up my schooling there and
3:58
I was very very fortunate to start a
4:00
career with the Coca-Cola Company nice
4:02
yeah I spent about 30 years with that
4:04
company and being in the hometown of the
4:06
world headquarters sh did have at perks
4:08
so I really enjoyed that got to a lot of
4:09
World Series games got to enjoy a lot of
4:11
things with the Coca-Cola Company the
4:13
company actually took me to Richmond
4:15
Virginia for about six years and then I
4:17
relocated back to Orlando Florida in
4:19
2003 and I've resided there ever since
4:22
until I took this job in Bowling Green
4:24
now so I'm adjusting to that weather
4:26
change it's been a little bit of a
4:28
challenge the last few weeks I can
4:30
imagine I have two great sisters to say
4:32
we grew up in a car family would
4:34
probably not be 100% accurate my dad
4:36
introduced me to short track racing and
4:39
nhr events even hydroplane racing at an
4:42
early age but we didn't have any really
4:44
cool cars until my mom got a 69 Camaro
4:47
oh yeah that was a car I got to drive a
4:49
little bit my early years in high school
4:51
so maybe that's what started me in a car
4:53
type loving the vents so when did you
4:55
know you were a car guy when did you
4:57
realize that you're into cars it's very
4:59
strange we grew up in a family before we
5:01
got the Camaro everything was a Chrysler
5:04
product huh so my dad grabbed me one day
5:07
and said hey we're going to the Plymouth
5:08
dealership they have a funny car there
5:10
on display so it was Don the snake Pome
5:12
and I don't know if you grew up with any
5:14
of those names and racing but oh yeah oh
5:16
my gosh I was fascinated by that car
5:18
fell in love with it and immediately
5:20
started grabbing every hot rod and Car
5:22
Craft magazine I could get to read and I
5:24
was hooked from that point forward
5:25
that's really cool so when did you get
5:27
drawn to Corvettes was Corvette always
5:29
the car for you you know probably like
5:32
most of the guys I grew up with we all
5:34
loved Corvettes we just couldn't afford
5:35
them I grew up in the age when all of my
5:38
friends had Boss 302 Mustangs or 351
5:41
Mustangs so I had to be different so my
5:43
first muscle type car was a 340 Plymouth
5:46
Duster and from there I just had a few
5:48
Trans Ams I had z28s until I was
5:51
eventually able to get my first Corvette
5:53
which was a 1973 very nice now you've
5:57
owned multiple Corvettes I know talk
5:59
about some of your previous Corvettes
6:01
and the one that you got in the garage
6:02
right now well I started with the 73
6:05
which might still be my most favorite it
6:06
was an la2 four-speed car with air I
6:09
then graduated to a 79 L82 fourspeed
6:12
998 2005 and I currently have a 2015
6:16
Stingray which is a seven-speed and my
6:18
friends would disown me if I didn't
6:20
mention that every one of my cars has
6:22
always been a manual transmission it's
6:23
just something I've always enjoyed about
6:25
the model and being able to shift gears
6:27
so I love that C7 and really really
6:29
enjoy that when I take it out and spend
6:31
a little time with it amen buddy my C7
6:33
was a manual transmission and everybody
6:35
says well now that you've got a C8 I'm
6:37
sure you don't miss that car I miss my
6:39
C7 manual transmission every single day
6:43
I know it's something about it right she
6:45
Ates a great car yeah but that manual
6:47
transmission is something special it
6:49
really is now you've got history with
6:51
the National Corvette Museum too talk
6:53
about your relationship with the museum
6:55
yeah it's it's fascinating when I think
6:57
back about this but on a whim and know I
6:59
can't even remember how we found out
7:01
about it but my two best friends and
7:02
myself found out about the opening and
7:04
we were all in Atlanta so we decided we
7:06
were going to road trip we each had
7:07
Corvettes and we each drove our own car
7:10
so we drove three Corvettes from Atlanta
7:11
in 1994 for the grand opening and the
7:14
really cool thing that I want to share
7:16
with you and the listeners is my two
7:17
best friends are going to be back up for
7:18
the 30th Anniversary later this year so
7:21
I'm really looking forward to that so I
7:22
was there from the ground zero it's
7:24
special to all of us when we get around
7:25
and talk about our Corvette times yeah
7:27
very cool well buddy let's take our
7:29
first break when we come back we're
7:30
going to talk about what it takes to
7:32
prepare a Corvette at the museum for

9:57
4231 I'm your host Steve Garrett with me
10:00
is the new rhc delivery manager at the
10:02
National Corvette Museum Rod Keller in
10:05
the second segment of Corvette today
10:07
we're going to talk about what it takes
10:08
to prepare a Corvette for a museum
10:10
delivery first Rod the rhc program
10:13
delivered 2500 Corvettes last year in
10:16
2023 that's an amazing number how many
10:19
Corvettes can you guys deliver in one
10:21
day and do you think you're going to
10:22
break the record this year Steve it was
10:24
quite an accomplishment everybody at the
10:26
Museum is incredibly proud of it we
10:28
typically can be between 10 to 14 cars
10:31
per day okay and we certainly fully
10:34
expect to break that record this year
10:36
you know we've talked a little bit about
10:37
the growth and the excitement around the
10:38
C8 and we'll talk a little bit more
10:40
about different opportunities further
10:42
but we look forward to Breaking that
10:43
record this year that would be awesome
10:45
and this is something I didn't realize
10:47
but the museum delivery experience isn't
10:50
just for new cars is it that's correct
10:52
and I think that's something very
10:53
important I didn't even know it Steve
10:55
until I started there so we offer a
10:58
museum experience for any year Corvette
11:00
and quite frankly we're something we're
11:02
very excited about and want to continue
11:04
to grow that in 2024 as well if you've
11:07
got a 73 model and you want to bring it
11:08
in we will detail it clean it up for you
11:11
get it on the Boulevard and you'll
11:12
experience everything that somebody with
11:14
a brand new C8 will experience and it's
11:16
so much fun we get so many comments when
11:18
we have a C3 out on the Boulevard and
11:21
people see it on the webcams we get
11:22
calls all day long or what is that C3
11:24
doing out there you know so something
11:26
people should really look into and they
11:27
can see all that information on our
11:29
website so I'd encourage people to take
11:31
a look that's really awesome I didn't
11:33
even know that and that's cool
11:34
information now a lot of people Rod
11:37
believe that when their Corvette is
11:38
built across the street at the plant
11:40
they just drive it over the museum but
11:42
that's not exactly true talk about how
11:45
you get Corvettes from the plant over to
11:47
the museum yeah that seems like the
11:49
simplest process right Steve but that's
11:51
not how it works it's put on a transport
11:53
just like if it was being taken to
11:55
Atlanta Georgia and dropped off the
11:56
dealerships there we get anywhere from
11:59
one to two transports per day depending
12:01
on the number of cars that are available
12:03
for us they are brought right across the
12:05
street we unload them we check them in
12:07
just like any dealership would very cool
12:09
now Rod talk to me about when the rhc
12:12
process starts for you and your team
12:14
because obviously it's got to be weeks
12:16
in advance doesn't it it is and we'll
12:18
start to track the cars as they're
12:20
coming through from a build Shane does
12:21
an amazing job of watch news as they
12:23
progress what we don't do is we do not
12:26
schedule the customer delivery dates
12:28
until we actually have the cars in our
12:30
possession typically we'll get those
12:32
cars and then we'll begin the process of
12:34
reaching out to the customer and
12:35
confirming delivery dates anywhere
12:37
usually from two weeks after we receive
12:39
the car and it can depend if they're
12:41
wanting to get it a little bit earlier
12:42
we can work that way or for a little bit
12:43
later we can do that as well gotcha now
12:45
I can imagine scheduling a museum
12:47
delivery with a customer has to be a
12:49
jigsaw puzzle how does all that work
12:51
from your perspective and what things
12:53
have to be factored in when scheduling a
12:55
delivery for RH you know Steve the thing
12:58
that's most important to us is our goal
13:00
is to make this just an exceptional
13:02
experience for our customers we're
13:04
completely flexible we offer up
13:06
different days different times we're
13:08
cognizant of the fact that they got to
13:10
make travel Arrangements they have to
13:11
book hotels they have to get a rental
13:13
car maybe they're going to have their
13:15
car transported so they're going to
13:16
start to work on Transportation of their
13:18
car home so it seems like it be
13:20
cumbersome quite frankly it's not for
13:22
the main reason these customers are just
13:23
so excited to come get these cars almost
13:25
as excited as we are to have them yeah
13:27
the flexibility there just works out
13:29
great for both parties and we just work
13:31
with the customer directly to see what
13:32
works for their needs nice now I know
13:35
there's a lot of extras now that
13:36
customers can order as part of Museum
13:39
delivery like paint protection film
13:41
ceramic coating installation of various
13:43
Arrow extras and stuff talk about all
13:46
the stuff that might be available for
13:47
people and how that affects the museum
13:49
delivery date Steve I appreciate that
13:52
question because I talk to a lot of
13:53
customers every day and not all of our
13:55
delivery customers are aware of that
13:56
fact but we can install so many items
13:59
you mentioned a lot of them you talked
14:00
about ppf you talked about window 10
14:03
we've also do wheel locks engine covers
14:05
radiator screen side rockers front
14:08
Splitters high-wing spoilers certain
14:10
stripe package hash marks Jake Stripes
14:12
things of that nature and I've got just
14:14
amazing crew and they are so good at
14:17
what they do Steve I just go back there
14:18
and watch them and just fascinated by it
14:20
but we'll install that for the customer
14:22
prior to their delivery and it'll all be
14:24
set up on the floor when they get there
14:26
I think it's something people should
14:28
start to take advantage of the can very
14:30
reasonably priced and we do a great job
14:31
with it that's fantastic well buddy
14:34
let's take our final break when we come
14:35
back we're going to talk about what the
14:37
Corvette itself goes through for PDI
14:40
prior to museum delivery that's coming
14:42
up next with Rod Keller here on Corvette
14:46

17:43
4231 I'm your host Steve Garrett with me
17:46
is Rod Keller the new rhc delivery
17:48
manager at the National Corvette Museum
17:51
in this third and final segment we're
17:52
going to talk about what the NCM does to
17:54
your Corvette to get it ready for Museum
17:56
delivery Rod talk talk a little bit
17:59
about what your team does to each
18:00
Corvette once you receive it and you get
18:02
it prepped for Museum delivery yeah sure
18:05
Steve so it's a pretty simplistic
18:07
process in terms of we identify the cars
18:09
based off of the schedule for the week
18:12
and we will pull those cars up from our
18:13
stag area and deliver those to the PDI
18:16
department on whatever day is needed to
18:17
get the car we ideally like to get the
18:19
car prepped they're brand new cars so
18:21
it's washing it it's drying and its
18:22
interior clean it's windows clean it's
18:24
Wheels tires all of that prepped and
18:27
we'd like to get it out on the Boulevard
18:29
as quick as we can so that people can
18:30
see it on the webcams the team is very
18:32
conscientious of that but after they
18:34
finish the general prep of the cleaning
18:36
all then the next step is getting the
18:38
accessories added and we talked about
18:39
that earlier so depending on what the
18:41
customer is elected to add you may add
18:43
another hour or two hours three hours to
18:45
the process but once that's done we
18:47
finalize that the car is finalized for
18:50
prep it's inspected again then it'll go
18:52
out onto the Boulevard and be ready for
18:53
the customer delivery so it's really a
18:55
PDI process how many different checklist
18:58
items are on that schedule so it varies
19:00
by model type to be real honest with it
19:02
we a little bit different with z6s
19:04
convertibles coups and they take through
19:06
about a 15-step process just with the
19:08
initial cleaning piece the biggest
19:10
portion of it then is the accessories so
19:12
Mac will schedule that based off of what
19:14
is he got to do to the card does it need
19:16
to be up on the lift is it just going to
19:18
be a high-wing spoiler those are the
19:20
points now that come and they're added
19:21
in to the process and allows him to
19:23
schedule the amount of cars he can do on
19:25
a daily basis and that's what I was
19:27
going to ask you how long does it
19:29
usually take to do a PDI prep for a
19:31
Corvette on museum delivery and how many
19:33
cars are usually done in a day so the
19:35
prep process the general cleaning piece
19:37
of it you know again we're very
19:38
fortunate these are brand new cars so
19:40
it's not like they're dirty but we do
19:42
take a long time to make sure they're
19:43
perfect the washing interior cleaning
19:45
Tire prep Etc usually runs anywhere from
19:48
45 minutes to an hour and a half and
19:50
then you'll see the different time
19:52
frames associated with a different level
19:54
of accessories we had a car the other
19:56
day Steve that got almost every access
19:58
you could imagine it took the team about
20:00
3 hours to finish it so it's just going
20:02
to vary depending on the specific
20:04
vehicle yeah Rod I know you've got a
20:06
fantastic team talk about some of the
20:08
team members that prepare Corvettes for
20:11
Museum delivery wow I'm glad you asked
20:13
that Steve and I would say the highlight
20:15
of my job is certainly get to talk to
20:17
excited customers every day but more so
20:19
to watch this team work we've got an
20:21
incredible crew and they're certainly so
20:24
passionate about what they do the brand
20:26
is important to them the museum is
20:28
important to them but nothing's more
20:30
important to them than their customers
20:32
you know it kind of starts with really
20:34
Becky and Becky is just like the goto if
20:37
you need something answered or solved go
20:39
to Becky she'll know it she's the one
20:41
that reaches out to customers she's the
20:42
one that establishes their delivery day
20:44
she sends all the pre- delivery
20:46
information out to the customer that
20:47
includes things like where we recommend
20:49
you might want to stay if you decide you
20:51
want to use a Transport company here are
20:53
some of the ones we recommend and things
20:55
of that nature but she's our go-to there
20:57
and that's not only go-to with with the
20:58
customers we go to with all of our staff
21:00
in the building then when it gets down
21:01
to the actual preparation of the car Mac
21:04
is our PDI supervisor and again another
21:06
guy he can do anything to a vehicle it's
21:09
amazing to watch him work sometimes I
21:11
just watch him put on decals because his
21:13
touch and his ability to put stripes on
21:15
all just amazing to me then you come
21:17
down to our delivery host what a group I
21:20
can't say enough about them they spend
21:21
so much time prepping these cars they
21:23
make sure their paperwork is a macket
21:25
they make sure that the customer has
21:26
everything they need they want nothing
21:29
more than that customer to walk out with
21:31
a smile on their face and feel like this
21:33
experience was the greatest thing in my
21:35
car Associated life and they all devote
21:38
the time and the energy and the passion
21:40
to make that work it's a super super
21:42
good team Stephen it makes my day just
21:45
exciting to watch them work I know it's
21:46
a great team thank everybody on the team
21:49
because I know they do a fantastic job
21:51
you're right I'm sure they really care
21:53
about every customer that gets a museum
21:55
delivery and it shows with the
21:57
thoroughness of the rhc program it
21:59
really does it does buddy I know you're
22:01
just new to the job but I'm sure there's
22:03
been some unique requests with the rhc
22:06
program over the years what are some of
22:08
the out of the way out of the box type
22:10
of things that people have asked for
22:12
that are unique to the rhc delivery
22:13
program there is some uniqueness there I
22:15
think more than anything else the
22:17
uniqueness might flow around some of the
22:19
people we get a lot of high-profile
22:21
people love Corvettes and a lot of
22:23
high-profile people take Museum delivery
22:25
we don't brag about it they don't always
22:27
want to people know about it but it's
22:29
quite often that we have somebody pop in
22:31
and just want to look at the Corvettes
22:33
that'll catch you completely off guard a
22:35
lot of racing fans a lot of celebrities
22:37
you know and I think there's just some
22:39
uniqueness to the brand which causes
22:40
some excitement and then we get excited
22:43
when we see people come in and go this
22:44
person enjoys a car just like we do so I
22:47
think it's more unique personalities
22:49
more than unique experiences or unique
22:51
requests in that terms nice nice and I
22:54
know that the guy that was there before
22:56
you has been a stalwart for the Corvette
22:58
museum Shane web Shane did the rhc
23:01
manager job and I know he's still with
23:03
the museum isn't he he is thank goodness
23:05
it was one of the things I asked about
23:07
in my interview process to make sure
23:09
Shane was there because I'd seen his
23:10
names all over the forums deservedly so
23:13
Shane is a great great person he built
23:15
this has taken it to a whole another
23:17
level he has forgot more about the
23:19
process than most people ever know but
23:21
he's very humble but he's very
23:23
passionate and he's very customer
23:24
service focused we kid each other in the
23:26
facility when we start talking about
23:28
well yes Shane emailed me last night 2
23:29
a.m. or Shane sent me a text message at
23:32
4:00 in the morning that's just the way
23:34
he operates he Embraces that and he
23:36
fully committed to it and he's very
23:38
passionate made a decision to change in
23:40
a little bit of a different direction so
23:42
right now he's focused on finishing up
23:43
some of our photo albums and a couple
23:45
other things that are critical to the
23:46
museum success from a rhc delivery
23:49
standpoint but the thing I'm really
23:51
excited about for Shane is this job's
23:52
allowed him to spend more time with his
23:54
family he's got a very young family he's
23:56
a very dedicated father father so we're
23:58
really really excited to have him still
24:00
part of our team a big big part of our
24:02
team but also he's getting the ability
24:04
to do some things from a work life
24:06
balance that fits his needs currently so
24:08
great person and next time you're in I
24:10
certainly want to make sure you get to
24:11
spend some time with him you tell Shane
24:13
I said hi he's a great guy I've worked
24:15
with him before and I'm glad he's still
24:17
at the Museum so am I and before we go
24:19
Rod talk to me a little bit more about
24:21
the Raffles that are held at the Museum
24:23
because those come up all the time and
24:25
they're so cool yeah I tell it's one of
24:27
the best things we get experience Steve
24:29
we actually had raffle last week and
24:31
it's neat because we do it live and then
24:33
we call the customer and so the last two
24:35
they've actually picked up both
24:37
customers oh and the excitement their
24:39
voice when they realize that they've won
24:41
a brand new Corvette is something that's
24:43
really really exciting you know not
24:44
everybody's ready to jump in and make a
24:46
purchase a brand new C8 and I understand
24:48
that but something that I would
24:50
encourage everybody to do is they can go
24:51
to Corvette museum.org and they can take
24:54
part in the Corvette raffle and they can
24:55
take a chance on winning a brand new C
24:58
with that comes Museum deliveries oh so
25:00
we're certainly excited to make that
25:02
delivery to somebody that just got a
25:03
brand new Corvette winning it through a
25:05
raffle and it's just so much fun when we
25:07
do these and the people are so excited I
25:09
would encourage anybody maybe to take a
25:10
chance on that maybe if you have the
25:12
good luck you can get a car and a fee
25:14
Museum toiv there you go you know buddy
25:16
I never win anything I should be so
25:18
lucky to win a Corvette from the
25:20
National Corvette Museum yeah I could
25:21
tell you some of the statistics on this
25:23
but you probably wouldn't believe me but
25:24
it's fascinating so I would say anybody
25:26
take a chance on it because you have a
25:28
good chance of winning that's awesome
25:30
Rod thank you so much for being on
